i finally got my cast off on thursday and my foot is pretty swollen to not as pronounced as yours was, but its swollen.
i noticed that my ankle can't move toward a full 90 degree angle i feel a bit of tention when i try to move it all the way and i was wondering if you experienced the same thing.
i figured that its because its been in a cast for 6 weeks and its really weak and hasnt gotten any exercise.
But i'm not so sure. i can however stand a bit without my crutches on
@KaGomeRuleZ4Ever Nice to hear! Congratulations on that milestone. :) Trust me, each step of progress with this injury is a great thing.
As for the stiffness in the ankle region, I definitely had that. A large amount of stiffness. It was really tough at first, but over time and deliberate exercise/movements, it will loosen up and you will increase your range of motion. Just don't rush things or get discouraged early on because you have to retrain your mind/muscle connection. It will happen. :)
Does it hurt when you walk Because i have a very swollen right foot and it is the most painful thing i've ever experienced. Only started yesterday (9/9/10) Any tips if it is The symptom you describe or maybe something else?
Make that 2 of us currently going through it currently! Reached the magical age of 37 (38 in 3 weeks) and play football in door in the UK against our graduates who average age is 23, less than 30 seconds to go and went to set off and bang! Well I am 2 weeks post surgery on Thursday but my mental state is the hardest to deal with, just the length of time out of action and having to come to terms with the fact I cannot risk going through this again. Thanks for your experience, gives me hope.
Greetings. I'm sorry to hear about the injury. Yes, the mental component of this injury is pretty major. Try to concentrate on other activities and goals so that you don't allow your thinking to recycle negative thoughts. It's impossible to *NEVER* think a bad thought, but letting that be the sole form of thinking will lead to nothing good. Let me know if you have any questions, but now's the time to heal & consider your next steps in this process. :)
i love u right now u are giving me so much hope right i though i was the only one going though this ur a strong guy and er thing that happened to ur foot is happening to mine so if u are healing i know i will be able to:-)
@tendonish Thanks for the kind words. :) Let me know if you have any questions about the experience and I'll do my best to give you a helpful answer. Take care of yourself.
@CyberCacique1 Ok thanks buddy,i was getting bit worried cos my foot is also swelled up and its been 6 weeks after my rupture.U calmed me down thanks.
Wow, i get my cast off july 2nd, but i'm going to be in las Vegas july 19th.Do you think i would be able to function somewhat with out a cane or crutches?
@comicfreak45 If it were, me, there is *NO WAY* I could function w/o crutches (even less w/a cane...) 17days from getting the cast removed.
I wish you the best, but I think you'd be making a big mistake to go to Vegas w/o some type of mobility aid. Also, you will still need to ensure your circulation is adequate that early on from getting the cast removed...
The guy who wrapped my cast said you get the same result w/o surgery and up to this point he was right. You just spend a little more time in cast, I had two casts for 5 weeks. Two weeks pointed down and 3 weeks almost 90 degrees. God Bless America, take care bro!
Two total casts for 5wks or one cast for 5wks and another cast for 5more wks? I'm pretty fascinated by the different approaches to treatment this injury has. We're all looking for the same goal. :) Glad to hear you're doing well.
Thanks for making these videos, really helped me out, My initial diagnosis was partially torn @ the emergency room. They of course advised me to f/u with surgeon, who told me it was fully ruptured. He gave me a choice between immobilization and surgery, so I chose to immobilize it. 5 weeks in a cast and 1 month in walking boot. I measured my progress with yours and used your videos as a measuring tool since there is a lack of videos showing immobilization stories.
No problem. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's helpful for anyone who happens to see this. :) What's been the biggest challenge for you? Outside of WATCHING and not playing ball, of course.
Thanks for the reply. I was 65 years old when my AT ruptured last October and I played league Racquetball 2/3 times a week. My Physio is aiming to get me back playing at the end of treatment (after 9 months).
"THE" treatment in the UK is non-surgical whereas treatment in US is generally surgical; the main difference, as I see it, is that our treatment is National Health and "free". It's obviously a cheaper, but very reliable, infection risk free option.
After a complete rupture of my Achilles Tendon 30 October 2009 (parted 1cm) treatment in UK was of a FULL leg cast, toes pointed, for 3 weeks (can't put foot to floor) then Aircast boot for 8 weeks-mustn't remove for anything. Nurse removes at 7 day intervals.Physio for 26 weeks after boot removal.
I'm now 8 weeks into the Physio with excellent results.
Insist on non-surgical treatment!
The results are reliable & less expensive; you're not paying for a VERY rich surgeon (Dr Fullwallet?)!
As far as "insisting on non-surgical treatment." There are MANY factors to consider in that statement (age, future fitness level desires, cost, etc.). I am glad to hear that it was a successful treatment option for you. I'm intrigued by ALL treatment options for this injury.
I've had tendinitis in my right foot since 2007(and again in 2008)and missed a few months of work in order for it to heal with a soft cast from the doctor(in 2007 & 2008)
@CyberCacique1 I'm having the same tendonitis in my foot again and i saw the footdoc on Thursday and she wrapped a bandage on my right foot to ease the discomfort! I'm going back to her to have it taken off(bandage, that is)on Wednesday the 16th, hoping I don't have to have surgery or a cortisone shot!
oh yes it was ruptured -partially doc said. I went the immobilization route. i "walked if off" by walking on sideway. surgery if you got money and insurance. It wouldnt take 6 months to heal if it wasn't ruptured. Relax, the human body is resilient
hi i just had surgery this past tuesday on my a.t.r . I had the wrap when i went to the er, and once i got surgery they gave me a hard cast. So far i only had pain the first couple of days and had to take meds but now no meds and pain is barely there unless i try to straighten out my leg than it hurts like crazy. my doc said i should be in this cast for 6-8 wks and than a boot for another 6-8 wks than p.t - pyhsical therapy seems like its going to hurt a lot. not looking forward to a limp :(
i injured myself on 9/19/09 and had surgery on 9/25/09 had the soft cast on for 2weeks then right back n2 the boot which surprised me cause from your videos you went from 1 cast to the next, im 20years old so still young i like to assume im healing fast This is my first week out the cast and i was asked to wear the boot for a month b4 any weight can be added i feel perfectly fine just trying to get more flexibility and get back in that neutral position Walking around campus has become the worst!
How are you? I only had ONE cast. I had a wrapped leg from the ER 3days before surgery and then right after surgery had a week of another wrapped leg. There was some plaster on the backside, but technically, the blue cast was the only full cast I had. The other things were mostly transition immobilization things and would allow for my swelling to go down.
I feel for you having to walk around campus. Man, that must be really tough. Try not to over-do it. The setbacks are definitely not worth it.
Nice. It's pretty interesting how different doctors approach the recovery process. I don't really think there's a "right" or "wrong" way to treat it IF the doctor has done their method before and it allows someone to heal and get back to physical activity.
I injured myself on 9/9/09. Will be having surgery on 10/1/09. I am so thankful for these video posts. I appreciate your encouragement, because right now, I am totally overwhelmed by the process. I know that it could be worse, as you stated, but right now, I am so discouraged. How do you all get through it?
First, being overwhelmed at first is VERY normal. This is a new situation for anyone who has gone through this. Regardless of even being familiar w/the injury from being a sports fan or knowing someone it happened to. When it's you/I who go through this injury, it changes the game in how you deal w/it. It's very EASY to allow your mind to wander w/this injury. You have to be mentally strong and have a good support system in place and you'll get through it. I promise. :) Ask any questions u have.
Hi again, I had my surgery on 9/16 so, like you, I am in a splint with bandage wrap almost up to the knee, fooling around using a walker (which I actually prefer over the crutches) My surgeon said she was surprised to find that I didn't have as much tendon to work with as she would have liked (I guess it was shortened) but she is hoping for the best (so am I!). I see her on 9/30 at which time I will be put in an even firmer cast/boot so will update then. Thanks again for having this forum!
Hi bro, i recently tore my achilles in may, I had my surgery and i actually got my cast removed yesterday (july 24,2009) i didnt get a boot, my doctor told me to use my crutches as needed for support and to begin putting weight on it. I have a TERRIBLE limp, i was wondering how long it took you before the limp was gone or do you still have a limp?
Hello. I do still have a limp. It's getting better...SLOWLY, but I can notice the difference/improvement each week that passes. I saw the surgeon two days ago and he said he expects me to have a limp for at least 2more months.
I have no pain though....just getting to the point of having FULL range of motion. Therapy has helped, but I'm definitely not 100% yet in terms of a "normal" walk. I'd say I'm about 70% at this moment.
I'm really surprised you did not get a boot set to 10 degrees. Wow.
I ruptured my L achilles tendon in Chicago on April 19th and walked through 2 airports after a basketball tourneyment (long story, had insurance issues), but yeah...anyhow, they put it in a cast when I got home, no surgury. I guess the injury was too high in the calf muscle to keep staples in and the chance of infection is super high. So I guess we will see! I'm in the "RoboCop" boot now, and have the $75.00 removable wedges on now. :)
Had my srgery on Monday. Dr. found that I had essentially detached the tendon from the bone. I now have anchors in my heel bone which the tendon is now attached to. I have a question. When did your injury occur?(date) and how much longer does your doc say you will be in the boot and on crutches? I know everyone heals differently ... just trying to come upwith some sort of timeline for myself. Thanks again for the videos.
#1 - Injury occurred on 5/2/09 (Saturday) @8:05pm ET
#2 - ER visit on 5/209 @ 9:45pm ET; put into splint w/heavy ACE bandage wraps and crutches
#3 - Visited surgeon on 5/4/09 (Monday) and scheduled surgery; surgeon gave me FULL timeline of recovery and therapy based on what would happen each week.
#4 - Surgery on 5/6/09 (Wed); plaster cast on outside w/lots of cotton batting on inside for swelling.
#5 - Cast was put on 5/16/09; stitches were removed;
Currently, I am just starting into my full 2nd week of therapy and I can already tell a difference in getting back range of motion. The scar tissue at the repair site is healing VERY well. The Range of Motion in my ankle is kind of rough due to being immobile and locked into one position for so long.
thanks ... my surgeon is great and said he would have a better picture of the timeline after he saw me on the 6th when he removes the stiches. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I hope the rest of your recovery goes well and that you are back up on the court soon.
Looking back, I never addressed the ROBOcop Boot situation. I was prescribed the boot right after the cast was removed and have had that on ever since. The surgeon told me to massage the area and perform the home exercises given to my by the PT.
My last therapy session (2days ago) involved using ONE crutch to walk with to allow for more weight to be placed onto the affected leg. That was an adjustment, but I am actually adjusted to that now. Obviously moving up and down stairs will not work..
...with one crutch. Not that I am moving around too many stairs, but on the rare chance I step outside, I have to actually get out of my house and must use two crutches.
Also, when the PT started, there was a big emphasis on actually utilizing the affected leg so that the scar tissue and joint regions of the ankle would loosen up and I am really amazed at how that has progressed to this point.
I'll probably make a video next week when I look less robotic on one crutch. :)
@satchel30062 No problem. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. :)

@Bartoszek22 This was 6wks post-op. The swelling was less obvious around the 7th or 8th week. Lack of elevation levels play a factor as well.

I've heard of a few Achilles injuries with
the sport of racquetball (great game, btw).
You're probably right about the differences
in treatment options. Your system is efficient.
Our system is breaking down by the year. :(
We'll see what happens in the next few yrs.
I do know of a few people who've gotten
infections from this surgery. I was VERY
careful and fortunately did not suffer any
infection, but the risk was there for sure.

No. Never had ANY leg/ankle/tendon issues. This injury totally took me by surprise.
My surgeon told me that he's performed repairs on people who stepped out of the shower or off a step.
It's kind of odd to have never had pain, but we really never know what's going on inside our bodies sometimes.
How long have you had the tendinitis? Does it flare up with certain activities only or more frequent? I would definitely keep an eye on that.
