no one charged lines like olaffson ... which is why he ended up breaking his neck all the time as he got older. and after getting dropped by every label now relies on no-boarding...it's a shame ;(
This segement almost qualify in a modern snowboard movie. Especially the freeride parts are really good even with todays standards. I really love these pioneers that made snowboard what it is today. A true legend.
While Johan was absolutely amazing and probably the best downhill rider when he was hitting it, he was getting injured too much and was in all honestly a liability...it's too bad he didn't just learn his limits as he got older and stopped hitting lines like he did when he was younger
old school rules people did it for the fun of it not for the posing shit they do today this guy as the shit going onnn rails and park suck so much compared to real moutain for me this is snowboard
this partly remind me of nicolas müllers style of riding big mountain, allthough nicolas has taken it to a whole new level. then again, for being the mid 90's this is just insane
Finally the video part I've only heard about for the last 10 years. How many 20 year old kids today tear big mountain like he did? None, ya just don't see it anymore.
and how unfortunate. im 20 and this is what its all about, but ive had the pleasure of living in alaska my whole life, so its a bit easier for me to get into these situations. not claiming to ride like johan at all, cause no one does, but... there are people like us out there who appreciate this kind of riding the way it should be appreciated. oh, and his noboard part in aesthetica? cant even explain how stoked that part gets me every time.
Thanks for posting. I still have this VHS i do need to dig them out and get an old player! I love the Peter stom section AND juha Tennku so is there any chance these can be uploaded? This Juha section made me buy the custom with the sun on the base on the nose..and i still have it :)
Seriously, Jeremy Jones being more technical is a joke, Johan was one of the most technical guys out there in the 90`s. He was capable of sick switch tricks, huge stylish method to fakies on the backside wall in the pipe, fully tweaked fakie methods (fakie not switch, looking uphill flying backwards, so difficult that you can't even imagine , backside sevens in the pipe when no one else did them, often at insane speed. And as mentioned in precious posts, invented technical extreme riding.
True. Johan was doing this shit 12 years ago. I started riding in 1994, and Johan Oloffson was revered for good reason. the decent of Odin's Lader was just sick. The things Johan was doing were almost unimaginable when he was doing the. Jones would openly admit that Johan is the man who showed him what might be possible. Johan Oloffson, when put in context, has no equal. He is nothing other than a legend of backountry freestyle.
my TB10 dvd is completely scratched to hell, that shot of him jumping off that massive avalanche is the sickest. Someone post it! Or tell me where it is either/or
& keep in mind this was 1996. he was the first guy to do any of this. it looks shit compared to what people can do now, but they are all standing on his shoulders
I´d like to recommend "the standard snowboard show" who did a 30 minute documentary with Johan, showing for example one of the narliest lines ever. Really really great stuff... best ive seen.
In the Standard Films movie TB5 (Johans first part in a major snowboard release), he was filmed in Alaska attacking a line with such ferocity that he stunned the snowboarding world and instantly gained legendary status.
Until Olofsson arrived on the snowboarding scene, spin tricks, jibs, etc. were kept to man-made obstacles such as halfpipes and kickers. Olofsson started doing these tricks off natural features - windlips, cliffs, etc. - in the middle of terrifyingly steep lines in the Alaskan ranges.
I m not going to argue whether JO is the better big mountain rider or JJ, but one thing is for sure this is and most likely will always be the sickest segment of any snowboard movie made. This is when snowboarding was great, and it was just about the rider and the mountain, now things are all about technical and park.... I miss the good ole days.
I don't understand the hate towards JJ. I'm not putting down JO, far from it, but I feel that JJ is more technical, while Johan is more about speed. Two different styles that are enjoyable to watch, and both way beyond my skills.
It's like comparing what Tex and Burt were doing years ago. Both had their niche (speed vs technical) and both pushed the boundaries of what was possible on a stick, just like Johan and Jeremy.
The day I see you in video part, I'll bow to your opinion...
jones admitted that johan blew his mind and inspired him. Something tells me that johan hasn't let many poeple inspired him other than maybe ingmar and terje.
But you're right Jones is a powerful, technical and smart rider. He was an alpine racer. But I think this guy olafson rides like he has a few screws loose.
nobody has surpassed JO's performance till this day. not JJ and his jerky style or any of the new school big mtn. riders.
JO jibbed the mountain like it was a skate park. he also made wannabee new school skiers take notice and think, fuck, snowboarders are school'n us in the back-country too. we'd better step up. and they wonder why your typical pro snowboarder makes multiple times what the a average pro skier makes...
That is a sick part! Big mountains speed and tricks in harmony...Heard from one of his friends that he´s back from injury and rides again in Whistler... Hope they film him!

Yeah JTG, that is without a doubt the ASI Donner. Don't you recognize it? That is VERY close to where Jamil died.
As we left that day and I stared back for minutes... that is what I was staring at.
Perhaps one day, on the right day.

His style and technique is the most discusting thing i've seen since two girls one cup. He flails around like he's having a seizure in mid air.

Yes, but the things he could pull in the mountains in that speed, was something even Terje couldn´t do.

914 meters / sin 50 = 1193,14 meters in 35 seconds = 34m/sec
This means an incredible average speed of 122.7 km/h
crazybanana1 3 years ago
In the end it says "3000 feet in 35 sec"
3000 feet = 914 meters
914 m per 35 seconds = 26 m/sec
This means an incredible speed of 93.6 km/h (~58 mph)!!!!!
Amazing...
