Football, basketball, and baseball are organizations where management looks nothing like their employees. If the majority of people who play football and basketball at the professional level are black, then why shouldn't the majority of coaches and assistant coaches (coordinators) be black? Baseball has a large number of Hispanic players yet Hispanic professional baseball coaches are rare.
This just shows that even one decade into a new century race continues to haunt this country.

His comments weren't racist or derogatory at all. Jimmy just gave his honest opinion based on the trend going on in pro sports at the time. As for the documentary, it portrayed him in the most negative way; far from the truth. It was unfair what happened to him, considering black people are rewarded for their racist remarks.

CBS wasn't going to renew his contract the following season anyway so his goose was cooked even if he din't respond to that question in that manner

Football, basketball, and baseball are organizations where management looks nothing like their employees. If the majority of people who play football and basketball at the professional level are black, then why shouldn't the majority of coaches and assistant coaches (coordinators) be black? Baseball has a large number of Hispanic players yet Hispanic professional baseball coaches are rare.
This just shows that even one decade into a new century race continues to haunt this country.

There's less than 5 white running backs in the NFL and nobody brings it to anyone's attention but there is more than 10 black qbs and everybody acts like there should be more. It makes me wonder how many Peyton Hillis type running backs that have been overlooked? And the only reason he got noticed is because of injuries. I think political black people will only be satisfied if the NFL was over 90 percent black and they'll probably get their wish one day.

@santanapmutt There are less than 5 white RB candidates. Even fewer white defensive backs. Peyton Hillis is only one case so far. If this becomes the norm, then you'll hear more about it. The reason there was an uproar for the black coach and black QB was because there were PLENTY of candidates but few opportunities to prove themselves and the reason was obvious. Hillis' case is only one of his kind, so far. I'm not saying it's right because he was discriminated against to some degree.

@ggqbc I think the notion that Blacks are superior in sports is silly. I was a good guard in my day & I have NBA height. I never made it to the league but I had a White, college teammate that played for the Bulls in the preseason. Ability is only 1 part. Variables play a larger role.
He was very correct about the animal husbandry and the fact that the field work in the days of old translated in modern times to sports. The reason he was fired is because America isn't ready for that conversation.

ESPN did a documantary on Jimmy "the Greek" a few months back and it brought out how Jimmy had become a prima donna, was no longer effective as a prognosticator, and was getting on the nerves of the executives at CBS so they were ready to dump him anyway. His comment came at a convenient time for them and they used it as an excuse to toss him. CBS wasn't going to renew his contract the following season anyway so his goose was cooked even if he din't respond to that question in that manner

yeah i watched the story and its too bad he lived in time where people were very ignorant. now days people are smarter and more open minded. are willing to give second chances or redemption. for example my stupid grandparents see me as that bad kid who struggled growing even though i am the 1st grandchild to earn a college degree at a university. plus 4yrs of military service. the older generation is so dumb. poor guy people were so stupid back then. sometimes television is so dumb.

Im black and Jimmy was probably right in his statement, its just the timing was wrong and he's not the right color to be saying such. It didnt bother me because its probably fact. Had he been a historian or said it differently it probably would have been received differently, either way it didnt bother me one bit.

(Continued) Plus, if you think about it, if Jimmy was black, and/or said those words at a time other than a holiday weekend that honored a civil rights leader or Black History month, he wouldn't have been fired, the public and media totally jumped the gun instead of carefully looking over his statements and looking at facts related to his words regarding more blacks in the world of sports. I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about him last night, and after he said those words, I have to say, honestly, and not being racist here, he is right, but it's not only the thought that black athletes look more athletic and muscular because of their ancestors experience with slavery, but also the fact that more black athletes train harder to achieve their professional dream than whites, not to mention the fact that more whites go to other areas of work instead of sports than blacks...
