@EJsigstrat If you're going to get all indignant about the welfare state, then protest the state governments (that Republicans always seem so fond of), not the Federal Government. State governments manage their own welfare systems. And it's not like you can just go pick up a welfare check (I know people who've tried). You get assigned a case worker to review your quality of life, income, family, and unemployment who judges whether you are eligible for welfare programs.

All taxation for whichever purpose must be for an explicitly enumerated power, and the GWC simply outlines the expectation of good faith spending of the collected taxes for such enumerated powers. Disagree or not, the GWC can be interpreted in many ways (Madisonian vs. Hamiltonian, etc.).
