  • classic Maynard always pouring his heart and soul into every note he played...

  • Nobody really cares how old you are: we all can brag about how good you are (Just saying, I'm 14 with braces and have the range of MF) but I mean come on; we're here to see some amazing quality Maynard Ferguson here! Not to look at the comments

  • Job 39:24 "In frenzied excitement it eats up the ground; it cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds."

  • im under 18 and i love him!

  • @MFjazzfan nobody cares how old you are...

  • Awesome!!!

  • @jannet0q I agree with You!

  • 15 people are complete idiots.

  • Does anyone know where I can get a written part for the alto sax solo?!

  • @dnine14 For a few bucks, I'll write it for you.

  • does anyone know the baritone/euphonium fingerings that he plays at 4:00 minutes or were i can get it

  • @vmiguel30 i have a pep band version of this if you would like, you can just read off that if you are playing baritone in Treble Clef

  • I love it when he starts playing the baritone at 4:00. It sound cool.

  • I love reading all the comments that Maynard can't play soft or he's not musical, or all he can do is play high or that he's no where as good as Winton. He never tried to do anything like that. He's loud and plays extremely high and he always had a great band to back him up. Maynard must have done something right or we wouldn't be sitting here watching 35 year old videos of him. He's unique which most young musicians (under the age of 35) wouldn't know anything about. as for Winton, zzzzzzzzz

  • @charliebsn are u saying that no musicians under 35 like Maynard Ferguson? cuz im certainly under 35! ;)

  • All time fav song to hear Maynard play. My day doesn't get started right without this video.

  • CLICK ON: disccentury, GOSPEL MUSIC, NEVER SEEN

  • More chops than taste.

  • how many instruments does he play? dont answer that, i want to be surprised in the other videos of the boss i see! R.I.P. Maynard Ferguson!

  • How high can he go? Pushes my ability to hear the note! Not looking for trumpet performance perfection. Looking for someone having a lot of fun doing what nobody else can do. Nobody! I miss Maynard!

  • I guess there's such a thing as too high. Or maybe it's Maynard's dog whistle. Anyway, MAYNARD FERGUSON FOREVER!!!!!!!!!

  • GOD bless you for your beauty notes, you make me to remember my dear and unforgetable uncle LUCIO VILLEGAS!

  • @guy12349 u should meet up with tpstrat u guys would have a grand old time trolling maynards videos

  • I really enjoyed this. Watching and listening to it now what jumps out at me is how much it's as much of its time as say a string quartet playing Mozart ..... pure 1970's funk ...... and all the better for it!

  • Hey, do you have the rest of this concert? Someone else had it up, but it seems to be gone now, and I want to see La Fiesta again :(

  • lol is thar nothing Maynard CANT play?! hes so awesome! but he didnt do the written solo part at the beginning :( btw MAYNARD FERGUSON RIP

  • can this guy play anything with finesse??? it's like everything's above high C and at Fortissimo level. Horrible musicianship.

  • @guy12349 You obviously know nothing about music.

  • @hi262779 i actually know quite a bit. and im not dissing on the guy. i think it's impressive to be able to play with lips and lungs of steel like that but it's a physical impression as if he just weightlifted who knowns how much. I'm sure it's difficut to play but WHYYYY EXVERYTHING FORTISSIMOOOO? SOOOO LOUD AND HIGH. Where are the tonal colars in the midsts of a trumpet note at 300 decibels??? what's 'musical" about that????

  • @guy12349 Well thats just the style he's going for, which in my opinion sounds great. But if you don't like it, fair enough. But don't say its 'horrible musicianship', because its not.

  • @hi262779 given my background i think i know a thing or two about music. So AGAIN i say, it's impressive to be able to play so high for so long - i think it requires tremendous lungs and chops, BUT what i'm saying is that it's super loud the whole time, and super high (actually called the Bravura Style) but his sound on any of the notes BELOW top-line-F is very NOT full (because his mouthpiece is so shallow). I'm saying i find someone like Clifford, or Miles or Wynton MUCH more musical.

  • @guy12349 Saying other musicians are 'more musical' than others makes no sense. But I can't be bothered to argue with you because you're obviously too far up your own arse.

  • @hi262779 okay a$ $ hole, you don't have to get all tough. I don't like the guy's "musicianship" you fag. Relax. And Wynton is much more musical than Maynard. There, i said it. j erk

  • @guy12349 In Britain 'fag' means a cigarette, so I have no idea how calling me a fag is an insult. But yeah fuck off.

  • @guy12349 ROFL I LAUGH AT THAT before I get anywhere, I love them both. Maynard Ferguson is great yea uh huh you know what I'm talking about. and Wynton is also amazing. He's a LIVING LEGEND. The reason I ROFL'd is because alot of other jazz artists critic Wynton saying his music no soul, he sounds like a talented high school student, etc. There was an incident where Wynton uninvitedly went up on Davis' stage and Davis said GTFO Wynton, You cant play the kind of shit we're playing.

  • @guy12349 I'd suggest you listen to "An Offering of Love Part 1" from the critically panned "It's My Time" wherein Maynard plays the flugelhorn lyrically in the altissimo register. Back in the 10s and 20s a popular trumpet style was "hell-for-leather" playing like Maynard. What is your criteria for musicianship? Chet Baker could never play like Maynard could, but Chet was the polar opposite of Maynard. Both played well very and both played to their strengths. Finesse? He's spot on here.

  • And manard is the best

  • Can u guys just shut up!? Honestly!!!

  • I love the guy shaking his trumpet at 5:37

  • @tpstrat14 if you hate maynard so much stop watching his videos you no life bitch. This is the second video i've seen you on. You WISH you could play like him, that's why he was the famous one and you're not.

  • 1:50 unbelievable range.

  • love that solo at 3:36! and maynard is awesome!

  • i, as a trumpet player, realize how impossible it is to play like that. he is absolutely fantastic.

  • @hanoj28 His talent is monstrous to say the least.

  • @tpstrat14 you're a fucking dumbass, you wish you could play like this.

  • @tpstrat14 You again? Really? You can't stop trolling videos of Maynard? You say he's the worst trumpet player you've ever heard! I'd really like to see you play better than he does if you think you're sooooo damn good compared to him. Get a life, douchebag!

  • @SuaveTito Seriously. I would pay $0.99c for this song on iTunes ONLY if the first 2:55 was cut out. He sounds like a manic depressive mouse with cancer AND gonorrhea. The rest was actually quite awesome. Very nice song minus the Maynard the Dying Mouse. And I love how he pulls the horn off his face all heroic like at 2:51 as if he just PLAYED something heroic... YOU SOUND LIKE A DYING MOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @SuaveTito The sad thing is that there really are great trumpet players that these poor souls could have been watching. Maynard is like the Justin Bieber of trumpet players. He thinks he's the shit, but he's really just plain shit...

  • @tpstrat14 I dislike Justin Bieber as much as the next guy, but you know what I *don't* do? Post hate comments on his Youtube videos. Because that's like going into every church you find and yelling "THERE IS NO GOD!!!". It's a fucking stupid idea! You're just proving how much of a douchebag you are with every comment you post. "Look at me I'm tpstrat14! Maynard is the worst trumpet player ever because I don't like him!" What a bullshit argument, so do yourself a favor and PISS OFF!!

  • @SuaveTito But come on. You don't REALLY like him. Just like no one REALLY likes Justin Bieber or going to church...

  • @tpstrat14 "No one REALLY likes Justin Bieber or going to church" not true in the slightest. A lot of people actually do, unfortunately so in the former. Just because YOU don't agree with something doesn't make it the same for everyone. As for Maynard, yes I do like his playing. From listening to a TON of his recordings, I'm impressed with his range, with his sound, and I don't give a damn if some arrogant asshole like you has a problem with it.

  • @SuaveTito I'm impressed with his freakish range (however unmusical). But his sound?!?!?! Come off it. You must be joking...

  • @tpstrat14 Come off what? "His recording of Bridge Over Troubled Water" which can be found here (/watch?v=FAFu7USo54U)? No I won't, just because you disagree! BEGONE!

  • @tpstrat14 your just jealous...I wish I could have his range, what could your reason possibly be for hating him?

  • @HEROxSabre That may be so about Maynard. But I don't see where the ability to rape has anything to do with the ability to play trumpet. The man is a mockery of this beautiful instrument. But if he can rape people effectively, that's great for him! I don't really want to hear him play trumpet though...

  • @tpstrat14 Dang it, you put me in a rage every time i see your freakin sign in name. Let me be more calm.

    1) What i said earlier, discount that, i was angry.

2)You are jealous 'cause you can't play as well as he can

    3) This ISN'T classical trumpet. IT IS...JAZZ!!!! It's supposed to be fun, high, and it doesnt have to be perfect.

    4) Stop flaming his videos. Keep your hater opinion to yourself.

  • @HEROxSabre "It is jazz, it doesn't have to be perfect"... Oh my God in Heaven please tell me you didn't say that. What a disrespect to one of my favorite genres of music. Jazz has standards just like any other genre of music. Maynard shits all over those standards...

And the only thing I'm jealous of in Maynard is his range. However, he doesn't play it with any authority, class, style, tone, or any quality whatsoever. Therefore, no, I guess I'm not really jealous of anything...

  • @tpstrat14 I'm not sayin it doesnt have standards, what i was talkin about was the solo. Thats the #1 thing you rag on, but it doesn't have to be perfect. BECAUSE IT'S IMPROV!!!!!!!! and yes, you must be jealous.

(oh, jazz is my fav. genre. I happen to be a jazz player myself)

  • @HEROxSabre I am also a jazz player it's one of my favorite genres as well. Thank you for what you said! Damn good points! This guy seems to be incapable of being convinced because of what he hears on YouTube. I've showed him an example of a recording with everything @tpstrat14 thinks Maynard doesn't have, and he's still not swayed.

  • @SuaveTito HaHaHa. Thanks man. I try to stay edgumacated. :P

  • @SuaveTito HaHaHa. Thanks man. I try to stay edgumacated. :P and make good points.

  • I'll tell you one thing, Maynard ain't shy. But that's only a good quality when you actually sound good.

  • at 1:45, are they laughing at him or with him? I'm laughing at him. What a joke...

  • everything you can possibly do with a trumpet is shown in 2 minutes in this video...

  • @ericoschmitt yea... besides play it with any actual skill or proficiency. I agree. I can't play that high or retarded sounding.

  • @tpstrat14 if you don't respect maynard or what he did then maybe you should evaluate your own musicianship. do me a favor and don't ever make these kind of ignorant comments again.

  • ive watched this video about 100 times lol

  • i love this song... maynard is the best

  • This song makes me feel like a black person, in all the best ways.

  • Oh mullets.... the world needs you to return.... WITH A VENGEANCE!!!

  • Oh mullets.... the world needs you to return.... WITH A VENGEANCE!!!

  • that lady in 0,47sec, she is nice

  • SOOOOOOOOO WHITE :)

  • Hep cat, sure, but what kind of meglomanic dresses his backing band like Autobahn?

  • I know it might sound weird, but whenever I listen to this I work faster on what I'm doing! This is a great version of the song!

  • Baritone horn CAN be cool!!!

  • whats so amazing about maynard is that not only is he the greatest trumpet player who ever lived, hes probably one of the best baritone players too!

  • omfg.. this alto solo oO FUCKING GREAT!! :D

  • Our high school played this last year, we sang the part at 5:49

  • Saw him at a high school auditorium back in the early 80's. Mostly other trumpet players in the audience. People were hollering, jumping and crying, You'd have thought you were in a Pentecostal church and everyone had the Holy Ghost. Most fun I ever had a concert.

  • @patrick9648 Saw him at Eastern Mennonite College in Harrisonburg, VA in 1982. My girlfriend at the time thought I was having a seizure!Still the best concert I have ever been too!

  • Preach it Maynard!!

  • Best alto solo ever!! <3 the alto with my life!! X)

  • Damn he can play high. My trumpet career is now over as I am finished of school bands. I was in every band the school had to offer for 6 years. By the end I could play as high as a D and have it sound good. His talent is simply phenomal. I remember playing this song in Grade 8 and 9. Along with Spain, it was definately one of my favorites.

  • R.L.T. R.I.P

  • As a trumpet player , he was my idol.I wish i was able to see him more in concert. I will always listen to his music and miss him.

  • I don't really understand how what he plays at 2:00 sounds good, its like a balloon let go of its air.

  • @havepie Sure, it's easy for a balloon to make that sound, but how about a trumpet?

  • @SuaveTito No, I know how high that is, although I can actually hit that, (I switch between an inverted embouchure and regular) on trumpet even though I'm a euphonium player, and I absolutely love this intro, but the part at 2:00 just doesn't sound good to me.

  • @havepie You don't have to like every note/song/album somebody puts out. It's not a matter of personal taste always, you just have to appreciate the skill that does go into it.

  • @Kickerinthehead exactly, well put :)

  • go trumpets and random percussion instruments!

  • lol

  • we're learning that now in my high school marching band. i play the mallet version, or should i say im trying. =)

  • forgive my diversion from the great music . . . the gal they show at 0:45 and several more times is quite the cutie; but I realize this is probably 30 years old LOL

  • the secret to success: a small bore trumpet, a small mouthpiece with a big cup, and a shitload of practice. R.I.P., Boss. You'll be forever missed.

  • @TisoyAko93 Maynard used a huge trumpet, a huge mouthpiece with a big cup. At least for the last 20 years or so.

  • @mrrod67 my word... it was a large bore trumpet, around .468, and an extremely small mouthpiece with a shallow cup, no bite, and a 19 throat.

  • @mrrod67 then i apologize, i stand corrected

  • Go to the dictionary, look up the word "fun", you will see this video....after all, if'n it ain't fun, why do it???

  • I'd love to see some more clips from this show which features Bruce Johnston on bari. I saw him in '75 and was a beast, as he is on Live at Jimmy's.

  • Maynard's three awesome moves:

    "I'm walking down the street!"*

    "I'm chewing gum!"*

"I'm pointing at somebody....I know him!"

*"I'm walking down the street, chewing gum!" is a combination of two moves, not its own move.

  • i played this piece at school! of course it didn't have that sort of intro! MAD!!!

  • needs more cowbell.thumbs up if u agree

  • being a baritone/euph player, i really appreciate 4:05 :D

  • Saw Maynard play this in 1977ish. My buddy and I were the only 2 in the audience who knew how to act at a jazz concert After Maynard's intro solo, after we too idiots were screaming 'yeah', Maynard stopped the band and said " At least two guys know how to act at jazz concert." MF was the best.

  • if you listen to the solo in the beginning REALLY closely you can hear it is ahead of itself. like you can hear it REALLY faint then hear and see him do it.

  • maynard is my hero

  • thanx Maynard...

  • If only we could be so lucky now, to enjoy this amazing music, an outstanding musician, and an incredible band, live. There will never be anyone quite like Maynard Ferguson, in his liveliness and pure joy while playing out-of-this-world trumpet. I saw him within the last two years of his life...while still great, it wasn't quite the energy we see here.

  • Sexy as hell

  • pause it at 1:11 look at his face. true passion. . .

  • my band teacher is always talking about Maynard Ferguson and I finally decided to listen to him and he's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:50 WHOA

  • R.I.P Randy Purcell.

  • rest in peace.

  • I hope those folks appreciated what they were witnessing haha. Awesome as always, Boss.

  • How can he play so high! I can only hit a high E if I'm lucky on my trumpet. (D concert)

  • @tjmfishing haha its funny cuz i have discovered that in general (or at least in my band) that the people who play the low instruments (like tuba such as myself )can go WAY higher than the higher brass. i can kinda hit the high F(G for u trumpet players) and it doesnt sound that bad lol. im extreemely curious as to why this is.

  • @scottjop656 I found this interesting also. As a trombonist I could play as high or higher than our trumpets (we all focused on expanding our upper range, heh). High F was a very reasonable note for me, and could even get all the way up to a high B- on a really good day. I remember one time we were playing Watermelon Man in high school jazz and I took the melody up an octave. The director thought it was a trumpet going up ... was epically hilarious.

  • I stopped listening to this kind of muzak a few decades ago, because I'd feel my muscles go weak, like Muscular Dystrophy would be setting in purty fast...

  • Dude my band teacher makes me play this song!! I love this song!! It's sooooo fun to play!!

    xoxoDanitichenor97xoxo

  • thats not human haha

  • hahahaha the keyboad player gets a little funky when the band first comess in hahahahha

  • da na, na na na na nana na na, NA NA NA NA NANA, na na na NA na na

  • Did anyone else feel like the audio got worse as the video progressed?

  • his face at 2:12-2:15 is amazing its like one of those carefree i enjoy my life faces and nothing can ruin this day

  • I love how maynard plays baritione in the middle.

  • Brings back memories from the 70's when I was in high school and our jazz band got to see him play. AWESOME!!!!

  • That sax soloist is awesome. We're playing this for jazz band. It's awesome.

  • Saw Maynard many times over the years! God bless his super Big Band Jazz Soul!!!

  • BARITONE FTW

  • Pelvic thrusts at 7:05

  • lol! i noticed that. now thats gettin into it.

  • heck yeah!

  • He is going to town on something.

  • Yeah, he seemed to clean his act up in later years... Been noticin' those since watching earlier stuff :>

  • @KindofGuitarish Don't you know, its impossible to be a musical god without pelvic thrusts

  • I played alto sax for 4 years then switched to tenor sax for 4 more years. Started playing my 5th grade year till my 12th grade year. i love it i miss playing.

  • whos the alto sax soloist?

  • They say his name at the very end I think they say its Andy MacIntosh

  • Marioooo

  • I heard this band several times over the years. I heard him in late 75 early 76 right after the Chameleon album had come out. Peter Erskine on drums and the rest of the band was just a superstar group. I heard him several more times over the years but that was the hottest I had ever heard him. The would close the show with Paglicia. It was pretty incredible.

  • one of those things that makes me wish i was born a few decades earlier

  • i love how he rips out a baritone horn and starts playing it (i play baritone in my high school symphonic band, and chamber winds group) such a good trumpet player RIP........ps. gotta love those sax solos

  • maynard was an amazing trumpet play.....pure talent...RIP Maynard...may your talent be seen by everyone

  • gotta love that bari sax totally overpowering all 5 trumpets XD

  • ROFL trumpets are not confident at all... GOTTA BLOW HARDER

  • Thats becouse of the mics.

  • ya playing this in our jb AWSOME :-P

  • You can tell how much Maynard loved music at 6:44, He looks so happy. We miss you Maynard

  • @nighthawk0490 I love a lot of cats, but Maynard will always be my idol...Period.

  • guys with the shakers "doing work son!"

  • A baritone feature. What else can you ask for?

  • Holy Mustache at 5:22

  • holy fuck is that a bari

  • decisamente grande

  • Yup!

  • Stan Mark looks so young!~

  • the second alto solo was FUCKING CRAZY!

  • The counter melody at 4:03 really just adds good stuff to the melody.

  • hey, 13 year old. just a bit of advice, the world doesn't need anymore cocky trumpet players than it already has.

  • white boys were funkier in the 70's

  • anybody there when he played at the exctutive hotel in buffalo i was

how bout the free sheas concert with bobby militelo

  • is this the back room at muligains on hertel ave in buffalo ny. if it was i was there

  • Anyone else hearing the same tone/notes he plays, before he plays it...at a very low volume?

  • Yeh, I hear the notes a second or so before he plays them- could be the high saturation of those Maynard overtones on the high notes especially. HIgh Volume Trumpet high notes can even make your TV and computer monitors waver especially around high B on up wih high volume.

  • that would explain if you were hearing something else at the same time or later...not before hand. you're only hearing stuff earlier because something happened when they were puting the audio and visual together and they ended up with a soft audio track running a couple seconds ahead

  • That's old analog tape overlay. The signal bleeds over to the next layer of tape on the reel. You hear it on Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love.

  • John Holmes on the sax... awesome.
