the TL 11 was pants and a piece of shit the 680 had a fantastic sound to it. so do gardners when u lugg them. It would be interesting to put a 6-71 or 6-V53 detroit screamer in one. but which one would scream the loudest gearbox or engine?
This National sounds fantastic I've never heard one sound like it before, most Nationals around here (N.Lincs) back in the day were either Daf or Volvo engined or the odd mk1 with original Leyland 510 (they were the best sounding:-), could this one possibly be a gardner engine??? Either way, it's the best sounding Big Diesel I've heard for years!!!!
I visited Lincoln in 2002, I think they were Leyland engined. The EDT-V's and the LRB-W's. I have a video on EDT220V in Grantham which you may be interested to see filmed in 2003.
Thanks for the info, I thought the Leyland TL11 was the Tiger engine not the mk2 National though. I have viewed the EDT220V video, a truly fantastic sound, the unmistakable clatter of the Leyland 510 brilliant! Brings back a lot of good memories seeing a National in North Lincolnshire Roadcar livery again, Great videos 5*
Yes, I thought the TL11 was newer but I know that they were fitted to Nationals as well, can't confirm this is a TL11 but it sounds like it may be. Thanks for comments!
The O.680 was initiallly fitted to the National 2. The TL11 was a modernised and updated O.680. It was fitted in later National 2s as well as the non turbocharged version known as the L11. Gardners were also fitted to some. This bus sounds like it's either an O.680 or an L11.
EDT220V was a national 2 so Leyland National 0680 engine. Where in North Lincs were your nationals. I used to live in Sunny Scunny where Road Car had plenty of mk1's and mk2's through the 80's 90's and early 00's
Road Car were taken over by stagecoach sometime in 2005 I think & they subsequently sold off most of the old Road Car fleet including the Nationals:-( Stagecoach definitely didn't operate any Nationals in or anywhere around Scunthorpe. Back in the mid-late 90's Road Car started selling off their Nationals but still operated a few, mostly mk2's but the odd mk1 also, it is about this time that the Nationals started getting scarce here sadly, I haven't seen a one for 8-9 years maybe more:-(
Nice to see a driver using the gearbox properly aswell. We used to rag them to death because most of them were on their last legs anyway. They could motor though!
Ah that is a shame, I don't know why bus companies are scrapping or selling off these old type of buses, they are classics and as long as they still work ok then they should keep them! W used to have a fair few Leyland Olympians here in Leicester on Arriva but they sold all of them about a year ago which is disapointing. Also First Leicester used to have Dennis Dominators up till about 3-4 years ago and they still Lynx's a few years back too, all gone now :( Replaced by boring new buses.

I wouldn't say this is a thrash at all! Good smooth gearchanges, fantastic. It sounds like a TL11 to me.

This vehicle had the L11 engine from new as Hornbeedublo suggests and was NL106L11.1R version.

Yes, the newer buses wont last as long as these and have no character at all.

This used to run with Isle Coaches in South Yorkshire along with FWA 472V - I think?
Can remember seeing these frequently in Scunthorpe on services to the Isle of Axholme.

Yes it did, I have some videos of this bus from last year in Isle livery.

Wow a Leyland National still in service, quite rare these days!

It was preserved, I don't know where any run inservice still. Possibly around Wolverhampton one may come into service.

Theres's still a few if you know were to look. The Wolverhampton one is Coastal Liner AYR 330T which does the 17, 905 and the odd rail replacement.
