lets just state this...Lisa is Roman Catholic...LOL! She is Muslim/Hindu/ (insert religion)/. I think Lisa is every woman that has broken any man's heart. Because as much as we are strong and macho, we are weak at the knees given the right girl/lady that will spin you around, suck you in, and spit you out (hmmm no sexual pun intended)....
of all his songs, this is the most evocative for me. wonderful lyrics flow around the pounding piano, and all of it pulls you out the window, away from sitting in the corner by the door.
why are people discussing religion and belief under such a great piece of art? the joy of art should get over such things... noone can honestly say that the belief of an artist makes his art better or worse
just enjoy this song... listen to it, make your thoughts about and let it touch you

its very difficult for songs of today to evoke emotions such as these..its all about manufactured pop now..its a sad state..the fact that almost 30 or more years later we are still listening to this says it all. Will we ever listen to "oops I did it again" 30 years later???? The answer my friends is blowing in the wind!
I am a Christian and love Cat Stevens. Anyone telling me I cannot like him for his belief, is like telling me I cannot like the Dixie Chicks, because they spoke with freedom in mind. Cat Stevens is the best and as said by someone, why is there not music written like this anymore. MONEY and FAME....stops creativity.
@durbinjoseph The main reason this type of music will last is because it was not aimed at religion, it just expressed what so many of us were feeling about our lives at that time.. No-one was worried what god you believed in, or if you believed. We just loved the music-AND I STILL DO!
Rolling at the part at the end! "How does it feel to be 50 & still in school?" I can imagine a 25 year old saying that, yes, even in jest. "They've got to see my legs!" LOL Then he fixes his mike & says, "Cool!" I still say "cool" even today...
You seem to be consistently missing the point. If you wish to judge 25% of the world's population and say they are all bad people because of their region, fine; it makes you a bigot, & hypocrite, no big deal; a lot of people are those things.
What you are saying is "I got robbed by a black guy and so did some people I know all black people are criminals."

@mtzerhouni - I would also like to believe abuse of women is the exception with Muslims, but unfortunately, it is the norm. It has nothing to do with propaganda. All the horror stories I've heard were first hand - myself, my daughter, my ex's sister who married who she thought was a good exception, a charming Lebanese doctor, friends of the county's president, who beat her, and when she asked for a divorce, poisoned her, and even worse... I wish everyone was liberal and nice, too.
Yusuf was definition of a cool cat or who knows perhaps the term was coined to fit him. He was also a tortured soul and the pain bleeds through his words and his art, I am glad that he has found a semblance of peace and that he lives now in a much more comfortable world in his mind. Even if it stemmed the poetry for a while, thought they are beautiful words still have to come from a person and I am happy that that person has come through it alive and well, un-like so many before and after him.
Stop people already make fun of us Americans for being ignorant and uneducated. If you stand on the point that Islam is a cult then you must regard all religions as a cult - even Christianity and especially "new age spirituality."
It is a sad thing that you use words and do not even know what they mean, but in the spirit of it all, give hugs not blows; grow into something better rather than claiming that your view is superior, doubt is the corner stone of faith and growth.
@mtzerhouni Yup, I do think that all religions are cults, even new age can be a cult, if you follow the leader most of the time. But new age is least likely to be cultish since everyone has their on views based on experience and what works for them, and their views are accepted respected, and no one feels threatened. One t is least likely to be told they are not saved, or they should kill the infidel, donate or teach the current dogma. I think metaphysics & shared experiences are the future.
I agree it's too fast of an arrangement. I listened to the album so many times my
memories are of it being much slower and more intiment.
I did get to see him on this tour in Houston TX at the then brand new "Summit" arena, one of the first few concerts there the year it opened. I was in the 8th grade.
I saw many concerts there and the Rockets and old Aero's hockey team played there for years, it's now Joel Osteens "Lakewood Church" very ironic considering the R and R debauchery in there.
This is such an awesome song. I wonder why he rushed through it, though. This is supposed to be a slow, sad song. This version is choppy and doesn't give me the same feeling that the original recorded song does. Way too fast....
ATTENTION I FOUND PROVE OF THE EXISTENCE OF A VERY VERY RARE CAT STEVENS CLIP OF ''MAYBE YOUR RIGHT'' I POSTED THE EVIDENCE IN A VID: /watch?v=Eq0b1Xazydg
Why? Because with the state of the record business and the economy, music is made to make money primarily. They don't let the artists expand their creativity for fear that it wont sell. Artists with courage have to put their own CD's for sale at their own expense and have little distribution except what they can muster at their own gigs:(
Um ... I LOVED Steven, but ... doesn't anyone else think that his comments about the rose were rude, to say the least? I mean, if it had been you, would you have rebuked the "guilty party" in front of an entire audience? I think that would have humiliated me if I were the one who taped that rose on the mike (as careless as that may have been.) But I think I heard him say that he was really restless and dissatisfied at that point in his life (not a verbatum quote.) That could explain it.
@tda218 ...in those days when it was 'cool' and fashionable to use real foul language, he did not even utter any word that one would not use at the dinner table in front of parents. His frustration was spewed out with school boy vocabulary - '...stupid, idiot'. That shows how effective one can be if one has talent and wisdom --there is no need to use the F-word, which those days was 'so normal'. Get it ??
I was amazed to hear him say something that I have often thought myself ... how we interpret someone's feelings through our own experiences ... it reveals, most probably, more about one's self rather than that of the other person we are trying to understand. It's weird to hear someone put into words your own thoughts that you have not been able to articulate.
@Ccenturion1: you are absolutely right. i just remark it. this music is lost. everything nowadays comes out of a PC. and first i thought such handbuilded century-songs are timeless. but obviously only for a little internet-fanbase...thats sad!
May his filthy soul be prepared for Hell! Yes, Hell; where Satan belches fire, and enormous devils break wind both night and day! Hell; where the mind is never free from the torments of remorse, and his bottom never free from the pricking of little forks! Hell; where the softest bits of his nether regions are everybody else's favourite lunch! Hell; where the air is pungent with the aroma of roasted behinds!
@FireEyedMaidOfWar --- You sound like you speak from personal experience ? I challenge you to sit in front of the mirror .... repeat all your wretched words ..... and use the word I isn't of he . The prickly pears are souly for you ... Cat was always about peace , You're hatred and your judgements keep you stuck in black . I wish you well and I wish you enlightment . Acorn1208b
@Acorn1208b: O, the Gods defend my soul from such deep sin! Shall I seem crest-fall'n in the sight of this awful singer? Or with pale beggar-fear impeach my height before you out-dared dastard? Ere my tongue shall wound my honour with such feeble wrong, or sound so base a parle, my teeth shall tear the slavish motive of recanting fear, and spit it bleeding in his high disgrace, where shame doth harbour, even in his face!
@FireEyedMaidOfWar I challenge you to sit in front of a mirror and look yourself right in the eyes .Replace his and He for I and me spewing al your wretched words. USA has welcomed him home ...and religion is always our choice . Save the prickly pears for yourself . I wish u insight and enlightenment
@Acorn1208b: O, the Gods defend my soul from such deep sin! Shall I seem crest-fall'n in the sight of this awful singer? Or with pale beggar-fear impeach my height before you out-dared dastard? What was Good , is Good. Great music will always remain just that for those who can hear it and feel it, even play it. Universal Truths are such because they resonate in the hearts of all humans, all humanity, in all Times and places. Play on Cat!
About seeing yourself in others and vice versa. He was already very insightful and spiritual way back then. And... HE IS RIGHT OF COURSE. That is what Namaste means: seeing the essence of the other in ourself (Indian) and In La'kesh (Mayan): you are another me. That's sort of the "secret of life" I guess. That we are all connected and from the same Source: ALL ONE.
People forget just how huge Cat Stevens was in the 1970's. Elton John was slightly bigger but not by much. Pink Floyd was bigger as that band was Monolithic then
figured the cat had a bad side to him. The microphone thing explains it all. He's so vein, no wonder he went to Nepal....I loved, and still do his music, but he reminds me of a man I met in the Philippines, Jeff Dengler, he caused me to actually call him an asshole. Good luck with his new identity, he's still an asshole
@jags2rags Hi jags, I was shocked also by "the mic incident" but I'll tell you my truth; all people here are human. You, me, and, of course, Yusuf... I can see also that this video didn't meet Yusuf, but Cat. As humans we are we must be conscient that we are going to make mistakes. The idea is to softly recognize this, but at the same time looking for something better for one and the entire world.Until death. Yusuf is an example of this. As a man, Yusuf demonstrates us that this way is possible.
The poetry and amazingly complex music of this soul makes perfect sense to my heart. All religions are corrupted by people. God's Word is the light and sound, and we can listen or ignore it. This man listens.
Im fed up of ignorant idiots goingon about his religion he is a good man and he changed for the best, he is happy and still has talent leave it at that!
his religion is HIS business -- onbly GOD can judge him. This amn always had GOD in his music . He has HIS reasons to interpret GOD whereever he finds him. A particular religion has different meaning to different people -- let's be reasonable -- may we the so called "Crhsistians" need to stop this stinky sancimousnious attitude and maybe actually start TO BE CHRISTIANS and quit judging in the name of God!
His bio is interesting indeed. Started out as a Greek...and ainsi suite, so forth and so on. He was my highschool favourite...in the early 70s. ADI de Montréal, Québec
1975 peut-être. 15 ans. Une rencontre avec un certain jeune garçon portugais, Carlos, de mémoire mais pas sûre, à Paris. Balades et Sad Lisa dans le métro. Souvenir sympa. Dommage qu'on ait perdu le contact.
lets just state this...Lisa is Roman Catholic...LOL! She is Muslim/Hindu/ (insert religion)/. I think Lisa is every woman that has broken any man's heart. @Ccenturion1: you are absolutely right. i just remark it. this music is lost. everything nowadays comes out of a PC. and first i thought such handbuilded century-songs are timeless. but obviously only for a little internet-fanbase...thats sad!
cluhn86 1 year ago
@Ccenturion1 cuz the world has lost all it's soul. Spread this stuff around and maybe we'll have a chance again.

Take your religion crap and leave. If you don't like his music then don't say anything. Leave it alone.
Cat Stevens <3 You are loved by many.

Truly great. I don't care what his religion is, what a wonderful musician and lyricist. One of my all time favourite songs. Thanks for sharing!

Has FireEyed never heard of God's Love?
riodog12 1 year ago 2

@FireEyedMaidOfWar that's your tag name and you speak of god. War and god mmmm.
msartwells 1 year ago
@msartwells: War and divinity can be easily called synonyms as one should know from Heraclitus:
"War is both father and king of all, some he has shown forth as gods and others as men, some he has made slaves and others free."
FireEyedMaidOfWar 1 year ago
@Acorn1208b Right on!!! Nicely put.

Pink Floyd was bigger as that band was Monolithic then
Beadbud5000 1 year ago
just think,,, if lisa hadn't been such a cold carp, maybe cat woudn't have gone all religious and snapped. Cat and Bromberg would make a good pair.
All hail Akannaten. F the Abrahamic myths.

figured the cat had a bad side to him. The microphone thing explains it all. He's so vein, no wonder he went to Nepal....I loved, and still do his music, but he reminds me of a man I met in the Philippines, Jeff Dengler, he caused me to actually call him an asshole. Good luck with his new identity, he's still an asshole
jags2rags 1 year ago
@jags2rags I guess you have a bad side too because you call people assholes....... : )
paulcarrola 1 year ago

That wonderful singer¡¡¡,..remember my childhood years, always listening this music, I would like him to see it now in 2010,.....how sad......
julieamarello 1 year ago
his religion is HIS business -- onbly GOD can judge him. This amn always had GOD in his music . He has HIS reasons to interpret GOD whereever he finds him. A particular religion has different meaning to different people -- let's be reasonable -- may we the so called "Crhsistians" need to stop this stinky sancimousnious attitude and maybe actually start TO BE CHRISTIANS and quit judging in the name of God!
saxyguy1001 1 year ago

Sure religion is personal UNTIL you start using it to condemn anyone else , numbnuts how hard is that ?
