  • I love how flowing andrea's game was!

  • Chris Evert holds lots of records.....197-1 match streaks on clay from 1973 - 1979. That incredible! Not to mention she also holds the highest winning percentage(90%) ever male or female!

  • Actually that record is is 125 straight from 73 -79, and 197-1, is from 73-81, when she lost in the 1981 French semi to Hana.

  • evert has more grand slam championship wins than federer which i think is amazing.

  • Chrissie had everything, consistancy, great shot making, a brilliant tennis mind (probably the best we had ever seen) style, grace, beauty, she would have to be one of the greatest sports on the court that we have ever seen, her popularity speaks for itself! She was popular all over the world wherever she played and was usually the crowd favourite! Thanks for posting this match.

  • Andrea's shots look to have more sting, because she is using graphite, and Chris is still paddling away with wood.

  • Thanks for posting this. I much prefered Women's tennis ,back in the day. I was a huge Chrissie fan.

  • You really had to hit through the ball with those old wood tennis rackets. And you will NEVER again see the prolific use of the old sidespin forehand as demonstrated so beautifully by Chris Evert. It was a different game back then. Not necessarily better, but different.

  • It is funny because it is much easier for someone that went through the old school of learning correct tennis technique (with wood rackets) to switch to the new ones, then it is for someone to go from the new rackets to the old wood rackets. I took 20+ yrs off tennis, was a usta player when I quit, and then used one of those babolat rackets. I was shocked it was so much easier to play then it used to be. In some ways it has not changed really. But i see what you are saying something is lost

  • I agree. I hit extensively with wood as a kid and then changed from metal to eventually graphite and it made everything easier with the larger sweet spot. It's interesting that in this match, Andrea is using a graphite and Chris is using a wood racket. At least I think Andrea is using graphite. I imagine that it was only a short window of time where we saw wood vs graphite in the sport. I wonder why Chris decided to stay with the wood at this point?

  • The first 100% graphite rackets were kind of primitive--they had stiffness and power, but were heavy and vibrated. Then Dunlop came out with one called the 200g that was injected with foam--one of the first lighter weight power rackets. Andrea dropped out of tennis too early--she is playing with the Wilson ultra pws here i think. Chris was a hold out for a long time. When I played i used a Dunlop max fort--beautiful, but it didn't let you get away with anything.

  • Boy, this is great stuff. Both of them were extremely fine players. Jaeger shows much more variety and subtlety than I wanted to give her credit for at the time (I was an Evert fan). Chris played with such beautiful focus and control, and really found a great variety of nuance in a style of play that was quite restricted. In that way, she was a lot like Steffi, who also took just a few shots and worked out many varieties with them. Wonderful tennis. Thanks for posting!!!!!

  • Andrea Jager, was 15 in 1980 and made it to the semis at this tournament. Now, she is now SISTER ANDREA.

  • Andrea Jaeger was awesome, unfortunately she was kind of a head-case. She also happened to be my favourite tennis player back then. She was the epitome of inconsistency however. She had made a mockery of Evert in the French Open that year. A 17-year old beating a 4-time champion in a SF is pretty impressive, no matter how you look at it. It's just a shame she wasn't able to hold it together for longer than 2 years. That's tennis though.

  • she threw the wimbledon final to martina cause her father lock her out the night before so this was to piss him off lol

  • Remind me how many singles matches Martina Navratilova lost in 1983.

  • Chris learnt to play Andrea. Sure she lost a few times but she had the measure of her in most of her matches. Her timing was flawless and her stroke preparation second to none. She won so much because she was the original. Andrea promised so much but a couple of GS finals and a mixed doubles title with Jimmy Arias at the French were her only bouquets. Chris won 18 GS, had a winning streak of 125 on clay from 1973 to 1979 and one one GS every year from 1974 to 1986.

  • I think her forehand, after watching some of the clips, is much better than TRacy Austin's whose forehand is stiff.

But Evert's backhand is her better stroke.

She dealt well with Sabatini's looping balls until the last year or so on the tour. She usually figured out a way to beat her competitors.

I do think she preferred the pace though than the looping balls.

  • You're all wrong. Chris's great shot was her sidespin forehand.

  • I am not agreeing with teh above that her forehand is weak. I just think her backhand is better. Evert was the master of mixing up her strokes and then hitting a haymaker groundstroke that would leave her opponent flatfooted.

  • i totally agree with you....its a really punishing shot, skidding away from the player...and she mixed in drops to perfection....her backhand was pretty great too, especially the lob..

  • I say it was her sidespin backhand because you couldn't tell if she was going to hit flat, drop, or a topspin. Not only that you couldn't tell if she was going cross or down-the-line. The forehand was great but less disguise and susceptible to errors.

  • Chrissie's groundies are just about impeccable except for 1 shot, the smash. Even for a sitter, Chrissie rarely went full blood on it.

  • I am really surprised no one here has commeted how ANOREXIC Chris appears. She is reed THIN !! I remember Tony Trabert commented about rumors on the tour that Chris was Anorexic. Mind you this was BEFORE Karen Carpenter had died of the disease.

Another interesting note: if you watch closely, you will notice Chris's strokes are barely falling beyond the service line. I think Chris was a bit lucky Jaeger lost this match b/c Andrea def. had the power to hit Chris off the court.

  • Didn't chris win this match like 6-3 6-1???

  • Yes, I'm not questioning her results. But if you compare her strokes in 82 vs. the Chris of 1980, there is a difference. The strokes didn't have quite as much "punch" or range. The shots weren't as deep. She regained some of that power when she switched to graphite racquets in 84, but by then Martina was dominating women's tennis and other players had caught up. Evert would no longer rule over women's tennis like she did in the 1970's. I love Chris as a player, but I'm not a blind devotee.

  • I am not a blind devotee either. I don't quite get the point of being that for any famous person.

I do think that part of why Chris didn't rule tennis in the 80's, besides Martina getting better, was that Chris wasn't focused. The main reason I admire Chris as a tennis player was how she didn't give up in 83/84 when Martina was cleaning her clock

  • totally agree. no one really realizes what it took for chris to climb back to be able to compete with martina. by the time martina took over (who i also love) chris had been ruling over tennis for about the prior ten years (finish number one for 7 of those years with a brief stint behind that clone austin). watch the 85/86 french finals. she hit the ball harder, came in 35 times in the 86 final and had become a much more diverse player thanks to martina

  • Wow andrea jaeger hit the ball pretty hard!

  • Chris is the all time best , a true original. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Incredible how few unforced errors they committed in this match...

  • Those first 3 points show why Evert was so tough to beat, she could take so much pace then end up controlling the rally, which would send the opponent in a spin mentally after a while.

  • Thank you

  • Ok thanks anyway.

  • Chrissie in the groove! Haven't got this match. Post more!!

  • what a backhand to start teh clip

  • some awesome rallies love to see this whole match
