Was just reading an interview with Oakey of Human League where he was saying he felt the rapid rise of Dare most likely hurt Shelley's career so I thought I'd give this Rushent production a good listen again. I do think Oakey was brutally honest and sadly right.
... I used to play this when it originally came out and in fact I put Pete on for a live gig at my club in Liverpool called Cagneys in 1981 ... I was one of the very few people who did ... Great tune ! Great Artist ! Great Post !
Such a house feel to this, ahead of its time. All the cool new romantic/goth/punk kids used to groove to this down at Legends in Manchester on a Thursday night.
3:33 12WIP 6720 - Understanding (The Zodiac of Wisdom, 67= BINH, Hebrew for Understanding) of The Forces of Change (20 = Kaph, Atu X, The Wheel of Fortune of the Rota) may need to be WIPped along, but does it need dominatrices?
Oh my GOD!!!! I have been looking for this song since the 80's!!! I never forgot the words and I had it floating around my head for all this time. Thanks soooo much for posting!!!!
God this is such a fantastic song; had this 12" single all those years ago; produced by the genius Martin Rushent who produced the Human Leagues "Dare" and "Love and Dancing" albums.
@Staggerbaroque Usually people like that have issues with their own sexuality-it's their way of striking back against the fear that they have that they're probably gay themselves.
@Staggerbaroque I couldn't agree more, thank you for your thoughtful replies to this post.Nice to see someone with a heart AND a brain.Still far too many gay kids jumping out of windows in this STILL,VERY homophobic country.
this was the song that started the 80s with its new wave and house sound i was 10 yrs old when this song came out and it was my favorite sone until talk talk then frankie goes to hollywood i told my uncle who was a dj in 81 who was still playing disco i told him to play it until they like it !!!

I had the 12" single of this back in the day and all my friends danced to it but none of us really paid attention to the lyrics.

They should re-release this. It could be a rallying cry against all the assholes out there who bully gay teenagers.
