awesome singer, "shabefurkat kaa jaagaa huuN farishton ab to sone do " a singer who has always been consistent in quality in terms of lyrics and voice. Example of perfection
I have enjoyed Jagit and Ghulam voice over the years. We must appreciate the fact that both Hindi and Urdu has their Orign if I have my history correctly in the Sanskrit Language. I appreciate Jagit contribution to devotional music and and devotional causes which is more important use of music by anyone standards. I believe that Ghulam is a great ghazal singer in his own right and it might not be necessary to compare, since Ghulam has entertain others in his native tongue with the scope JAMAAT
I love the Singh's older ghazals, I am what you would say of the classical generation, whether Trindad or straight form the East. You've got to like Sushanta Sinha,he could be the the new Ghazal/Kirtana Prince on the horizon, trained by the Master himself, Anup J.
JS is hands down the greatest artist on the subcontinent maybe the greatest singer india has produced. His tabla player is also world class. No one else even comes close. Haters, please move to the "back of the bus"
i totally disagree that there is only one way to sing ghazals..JS has expanded the horizon of ghazal and made it more accomodating and popular...and never compare JS and GA...both are connoiseurs of the art..

Quite agree with u ppl...jagjit sing does not sing gazals in true sense...but he has popuralized gazals..apart from that in his some of the earlier gazals he showed his mastery..............
Jagjit Sahab let's meet somewhere hahahahah i want to be your student.... LOVE THIS SONG THOUGH, it is only music capable to break boundries. wahhhhhh

I am a big fan of ghulam ali khan sahab ..... and dont think jagjeet singh is even comparable to khan sahab... but still this one ghazal of him is to notch.. good stuff buddy... long way to go
Let me tell you, 'everything is relative'. Don't say Jagjit Singh is not comparable to Ghulam Ali!
Jagjit Singh gave new breadth to the meaning of "Ghazal".
There are different criteria of judgement in music, vocal capability only doesn't make the difference.
Jagjit Singh has natural golden voice, smoothness in rendition of ghazal, superb organization and harmony of various instruments in his music, that Ghulam Ali can't dream of having in the twilight years of his career.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have been to both jagjeet singh's and and g ali sahabs concerts nore than 5 times both in india and US.... khan sahab spent 19 years of his life learning music from ustad bade g ali and barkat ali khan who were the greatest musicians in history of indian sub continent.. jagjeet singh started as a punjabi pop singer and wat he is doin now is nothin but mello hindi pop. IT IS NOT GAZAL. pls 1st go listen to REAL gazals by ppl like g ali, barkat ali, m. hasan. u r jus a victim of false media hype
The ghazal style of singing requires a singer who can SPREAD & INCREASE the popularity of this style. Jagjit has done an excellent job of this. If the medium dies then even the BEST ghazal singers cannot save it! So please view the matter in a proper perspective!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
so when ppl stop listening to jagjeet singh one day.. he wud start wearing punky clothes and bring strippers in his vedios .. jus too make it POPULAR.... man let the art of gazal and mauseeki be... it is too surreal to be dependent on acceptance by ignorant masses... it was music made for royalty and is still best understood by ppl who r royal at heart... if u want popular stuff go listen to himesh reshmiya and anu malik....
What the heck are you talking about? Musical genres require a superstar for wider acceptance. Elvis Presley made black music acceptable to mainstream America; Beatles made rock combos acceptable to the world; Sam Cooke widened the appeal of soul music; BeeGees did same for disco music; Michael Jackson made music videos into art; Madonna spread the music videos. Jagjit Singh widened the appeal of ghazals. What is this nonsense about royalty & royal at heart about music listening? Please explain.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
u hv a black and white definition of wats bad or good..... i never said jagjeet singh is bad .... its jus that he is NOT a gazal singer.. cos what he sings is not gazal its soft pop.... jus cos he happens to be popular u cant let him change definitions... else himesh reshmiya would start calling his music death metal... and royalty of taste is not smthng that i can explain u brother. u hv to experience it... go to a concert with both jagjeet singh and ghulam ali. u ll get it. g ali is magical
JS is hands down the best artist to come out of india since Ravi Shankar. He is at the top of is game no matter what genre he attempts. Bhajans, Ghazals, you name it. He brings people in rather than exludes them and if that means he has to break the rules so be it. A true artist knows that the rules are meant to be broken but only by someone that knows them.
So, if he's not selling Jagjit Singh will start wearing punky clothes and bring strippers in...just like most of the music industry does. What a logic? By this same logic you seem to declare all his fans and admirers including veterans like Pt. Ravi Shankar (who is the strictest disciplinarian in classical music), Lata Mangeshkar (who worked with him for Sajda and invited him to launch her last album Saadgi), Asha Bhosle, Pt. Jasraj, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Zakir Hussain....
See thats wat I am talkin bout.... 1) ur dumb brain doesnt understand the diff b/w being humble n given token of appreciation to junior artists and being a fan. "hypocrisy"... u know wat hypocrisy is... Jagjeet singh calls him self GAs "friend" .. sings GAs songs in his albums and after mumbai attack he gave a stmt that pak singers shud be banned in india...
2) not only this.. he is arrogant... he gave a stmt that Rahaman doesnt deserve oscar.. n i dont need to "live" with u n million narrow minded loosers like u who think pop is gazal... cos i dont giv a flyin F about u guys... the thats why i said gazal is for the ppl royal in thoughts and taste.. go suck jagjeet singhs cock
Your words say a lot more about you than Jagjit Singh, Ghulam Ali or me. I think you really need some psychiatric help because these words are deranged. May GOD bless you!!!
Notes: 1. JS has been saying that about Pak singers since 2003. It's a matter of reciprocation. Pak hasn't been as welcoming to Indian singers.
2. Even Rahman, Gulzar and Sukhwinder Singh admit that the Oscar winning song was nowhere near their own best. So, it was a surprise, nevertheless a good one.
JS said that "rahaman" doesnt deserve oscar not his song.. he said he challenges rahaman to make music as good as him... pak loves indian stars and musicians much more than we love thrs.. even JS has performed thr.. as far as ur rhetoric is concerned man.. go fuck ur mom... else JS will fuck her.... i m done with explainin to u loosers how stupid u r... but i guess thrs no point... so sod off for ever.. peace..
Well, going by your disgraceful language i guess that's what happened to the wretched woman who bore a loser like you. Did Ghulam Ali accompany you? I hope not. He, JS and I grew up in the subcontinent and are civilised enough to respect elders (specially parents, even if they are yours). So, please keep your deranged views to yourself and there'll be peace eventually.
....Ghulam Ali himself and no less than two Prime Ministers of modern India (Former PM Vajpayee and Current PM Manmohan Singh) ignorant and less royal at heart. Jagjit Singh is an institution in himself that exists beyond boundaries or petty ideologies like the one you expressed. All these great names above acknowledge and respect him for the fact that he was able to simplify and bring a complex form of art to the masses because he was and is the master of the complex form to begin with.
wait wait wait.... i hv met khan sahab personally in NY....we did hv a talk bout it... he is not a fan of jagjeet singh... thr are lot of things these public figures hv to say in media to either out of humbleness or courtesy.. pls dont misconstrue a token of appreciation to be fanhood... wen ghulam ali was 14 he used to sing in mehfils that jagjeet singh cant even dream off.. and his teachers wer creators of the genre (barkat ali and bade ghulam ali)... so grow up.
Well, in that case your meeting with G A only exposed his hypocrisy, because when he's in India, in his interviews he's said these words many times over the years, "Jagjit Singh's contribution to Ghazals is immense". Also, in your own words ("...token of appreciation...") at least he appreciates J S. Finally, with due respect, wherever he sang at 14 and whoever his teachers were, the fact is that I and million others know about ghazals because of Jagjit Singh, not Ghulam Ali. So, live with it.
i love dis song of u jagjit ji n many many others u sang..nice urdu shayeri but ur voice made all dose words alive..luv u..jagjit singh..long live..always loved u n ull b in my heart till i die..great singerrrrrrrrr :)
i am native american...but i love all cultures in the world...i don't know what this song really is about but hearing touches my heart cuz it sounds breathtaking-peaceful...its very very nice
he was the best, he is the best and he will remain the best for ever. love you jagjit ji. iam not indian or pakistani but i am clse to u then evry one.
As a tabla player myself, I can say with no reservations Abhinav Upadhyay is the best I've ever seen and heard. Rhythmic complexities, Taal combinations, and variations are truly stunning.
Tari Kahn is no doubt one of the world's best, but not in the arena of classical Ghazals. This is a subjective item - for balance, make-my-feet-move, dagga-wrenching pure rhythm, Abhinav is my # pick.

Over there Rises the Sun(here denotes your radiant face),
When you were absorbed in your youth,
you shied away from me.
On the question of meeting you,
My (Counter Romeo) Rival is whom I fear ( As I am Insecure. As what was meant by the poet originally);
Often I retaliate him Ahista Ahista (Slowly...Slowly)..
Slips by over the head lo beauty, your mask..Ahista...Ahista..

As a tabla player myself, I can say with no reservations Abhinav Upadhyay is the best I've ever seen and heard. Rhythmic complexities, Taal combinations, and variations are truly stunning.

I like also his Tabla playing very much!! He is just simply genius :)

He's pretty good but nobody beats Ustad Tari khan when it comes to ghazal accompaniment. Abhinav is decent.

Tari Kahn is no doubt one of the world's best, but not in the arena of classical Ghazals. This is a subjective item - for balance, make-my-feet-move, dagga-wrenching pure rhythm, Abhinav is my # pick.

ghazals are arguably the greatest form of romantic expression...personally i cannot think of any genre other that ghazals where
romance just fills the air...
