This is a big misconception: When a horse's ears are back they are angry or in pain.

Actually it can mean much more than that. A horse may pic his ears like this one if he is concentrating hard, kind of like humans frowning during an exam. It can also mean they're listening. Both of these can apply to this horse. And if a horse is really relaxed his ears will be slightly back and to the side

I'm 56 years old and I've owned horses my entire life. You're right if a horse has his ears "pinned" it's usually a sign of distress; but this horse's ears are not pinned back, he's relaxed and looks to be enjoying himself. He may be anticipating having a scratch on the inside of his neck with the pen she's holding(this is a favorite spot to a lot of horses), which would explain the lip action going on. An itch being scratched feels so good to a horse that sometimes they react in just this way!

Miley, no, they wouldn't. I ince put on a show for little kids at a fair with my horse and i had peanut butter on the roof of his mouth and his ears were forward. Besides, that made no sense...why would his ears be back????
