Hector seemed to be the one who was most lacking in intelligence. Did he have a special skill (besides handball which never once came in handy for cracking a case)? Maybe he was a team member because he tried hard.

No I mean they're skills when it came to writing and reading. Remember this was show to help kids and to teach them that writing and reading was fun. As you saw when Hector first came on, he wasn't very good at writing or reading until Alex helped him. But he was good at solving things in his head, he just had to do it his own way.
