Hang on now my Uncle's knew nothing about this back in 43,they were drafted, they did not won't to go,and wanted nothing to do with a war, their father had served in ww1 and came back disabled
'Appeasement' is a historical construction that masks a far more complex reality and a deep complicity of the west in the rise of fascism...needless to say the concept has now become available for the bush-blairite doctrine of pre-emptive war
'Appeasement' is also why there is an Irish Free State - and likely why there is a "Northern Ireland" - If Britain held a hard line, it's likely that they would have been in a long civil war in Ireland between WW I & WW II - and it might still be going on, or another country may have intervened.
It's very likely that relations between the US and the UK would not be nearly as close as they were, and are - if Britain had not 'appeased' the Irish with the partitioning of Ulster.
Im looking forward to getting my boxset soon for my birthday. I used to watch this all the time with my stepdad back in the 70's. No better narrator then Lawrence Olivier.
Anyway, appeasement can be understood. After the carnage of WW1, millions of young people dead in the trenches, it is logical that the french and british government didn't wanted another round. So appeasement bring them hope for some months...
1935 was the year for Britain, France, Italy and Belgium to act. As soon as Hitler broke the armaments provisions of the Versailles Treaty, allied troops should have deposed Hitler. And as soon as he added to that by remilitarizing the Rhineland in 1936 and broke the Treaty of Locarno, they should have acted. Twice they had every reason to put Hitler down and twice they refused to do so, with the result that they came close to losing out to Hitler completely!
To give you some idea of the scale of it, the small town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee where the fissionable materials were produced consumed one-sixth of all of the electricity generated in the entire United States! The Manhattan Project alone likely used more electricity than the entire nation of Japan.
The Cold War was by far the biggest threat to everyone in the world. The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis was the the very brink of a nuclear war that would have destroyed most of us. It was not until years later that we found out that many of the nukes in Cuba were ready to fire. The nuclear build up of the 80's had 70,000 nuclear weapons pointed at each other, one mistake could have destroyed the world as we know it.
When you look at our fears after 9/11, it's mind boggling to compare the threats.
I grew up next to the North Dakota missile silos; If North Dakota had seceded from the Union, it would have been the world's #3 nuclear power. With Grand Forks AFB and Minot AFB, along with a missile field that was roughly the size and shape of New Jersey; that is a whole lot of bulls eyes.
I think that if we had not dropped the bombs on Japan, we would have had a much larger nuclear war at some point in the 50's or 60's
If we had dropped it on Germany, Europe would not have allowed our bases.
well hitler would have had the bomb but the americans captured his lead scientist in the nuclear project and finished their own which destroyed hiroshima
The Germans put almost as many resources into the development of their rocket program as the US did into the Manhattan Project.
The fact is that they did not put a "uranium device" as a priority, and no one really pushed Hitler to make it a priority. The Norwegian resistance in 1943 (with the help and guidance of the allies - a good 3 part clip is on youtube describing it) destroyed the small amount of "heavy water" (deuterium oxide) that was produced in Norway. That was in effect, the end.
no he wouldnt. he had the materials to make an a-bomb but he was much more focused on his fighter jets and v2s and such. the allies raided the heavy water factory with ground forces, and found that hitler was way behind in making an a-bomb
also. much of the science, mathematical underpinnings for the A.Bomb were 'Jewish' science, and hence considered repugnant by the Nazis-this worked in the Allies favour.
The allies and Norwegian resistance did not acquire heavy water in the raids, they destroyed it. To my understanding, heavy water was used as a "neutron separator" - the Manhattan Project discovered a process that used purified graphite for shielding. The allies also had a plant in Canada that produced heavy water.
Right on Weber903 and let us not forget such wonderful sons of bitches as Bush,Volkowicz,,Cheney, and Rumsfeld the nazis of today, for they too deserve the same admiration..yeh time to take those pricks to justice...
While Yankee Doodle sails away to fight the German foe, the pacifists are shouting "Peace!" and say they shouldn't go. They claim the hatchet must be buried by the Allies now, perhaps they're right, we must have peace... and so I'll tell them how. Let's bury the hatchet, Let's bury the hatchet, Let's bury the hatchet in the Kaiser's head! We'll crown him on the noodle, make him whistle Yankee Doodle, Down came the battle-cry of Wilson!

I beg to differ. Bill Clinton pulled a lot of crap. In the end, the media shrugged and concentrated on Blowjobgate. They covered up his political sins with a figleaf of Sex. No big deal, right? Wink wink-nudge nudge. It sold papers and tv advertising time on the news. When 9/11/01 hit (and do not forget, this plan had been in the works for some time), the mainstreamers decided not to point to Clinton's Pollyanna-style way of thinking as having been a factor in the terrorists' success.
OK - give me a factual list of what Clinton/Gore "got away with" in his 8 years - and I'll put up a list of what Bush/CHENEY 'got away with'...
We'll cover 9/11 when we get to the list... Plenty more of the Bush/Cheney stuff will be coming out as soon as they are out of power. Until 1/20/09, plenty of the people are still scared to talk.
Missile technology to China. Preventing the CIA, FBI, and other intelligence organizations from sharing information. Forbidding the use of "dirty" informants (something police departments do regularly and with success). The war Clinton waged in Yugoslavia received precious little attention from the media, and nary a whisper from the future "Bush Lied/People Died" crowds of aging hippies and their neo-hippie grandkids.
Sandy Burger stole Clinton-era files from the National Archives, yet was never arrested and tried. What was in them? Bush's Justice Department, for whatever reasons, let the matter drop. Perhaps it had something to do with "Filegate", when the FBI files of Republicans were "found" on a table in the White House? The so-called "Assault Rifle Ban" which had nothing to do with true assault rifles (which had been regulated since the 30's) but more to do with degrading the 2nd Amendment.
Hey murphicus , you call yourself a progressive as do all the other liberals. I just wanted you to know that Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Castro, Pol Pot, and Mussolini were also progressives. All of these men were always harping about being revolutionaries and bringing CHANGE to their countries. Well I think that all of them brought change and we all know how that turned out. So I wouldn't say that being a progressive is a good thing because you never know what you're progressing to.
At what point should society call it a day and just stay static - should we have put the brakes on under Feudalism? My guess is that those in power would have been good with that.
Why did the founding fathers do that Declaration of Independence thing in 1776? Should we have listened to the "conservatives" who did not want a new nation?

Murphicus, I think you are absolutely right and these comments, inanities and insanities are more disturbing than some of the Nazi scenes we witness in this series. It is now 2008, and we are reliving German history right here in the USA. The movie "The Day After" is up on youtube - it will give you a sense of what a REAL threat is - and it understated the aftermath.
Today, they talk about the threat of a low grade nuclear device in a major city - compare that to a full out nuclear war.
Nuclear weapons will always be "the" threat - look at the reaction to N Korea having a handful.
