'Appeasement' is also why there is an Irish Free State - and likely why there is a "Northern Ireland" - If Britain held a hard line, it's likely that they would have been in a long civil war in Ireland between WW I & WW II - and it might still be going on, or another country may have intervened.

It's very likely that relations between the US and the UK would not be nearly as close as they were, and are - if Britain had not 'appeased' the Irish with the partitioning of Ulster.

1935 was the year for Britain, France, Italy and Belgium to act. As soon as Hitler broke the armaments provisions of the Versailles Treaty, allied troops should have deposed Hitler. And as soon as he added to that by remilitarizing the Rhineland in 1936 and broke the Treaty of Locarno, they should have acted. Twice they had every reason to put Hitler down and twice they refused to do so, with the result that they came close to losing out to Hitler completely!

To give you some idea of the scale of it, the small town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee where the fissionable materials were produced consumed one-sixth of all of the electricity generated in the entire United States! The Manhattan Project alone likely used more electricity than the entire nation of Japan.

The Cold War was by far the biggest threat to everyone in the world. The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis was the the very brink of a nuclear war that would have destroyed most of us. It was not until years later that we found out that many of the nukes in Cuba were ready to fire. The nuclear build up of the 80's had 70,000 nuclear weapons pointed at each other, one mistake could have destroyed the world as we know it.

When you look at our fears after 9/11, it's mind boggling to compare the threats.

I grew up next to the North Dakota missile silos; If North Dakota had seceded from the Union, it would have been the world's #3 nuclear power. With Grand Forks AFB and Minot AFB, along with a missile field that was roughly the size and shape of New Jersey; that is a whole lot of bulls eyes.

I think that if we had not dropped the bombs on Japan, we would have had a much larger nuclear war at some point in the 50's or 60's

If we had dropped it on Germany, Europe would not have allowed our bases.

The movie "The Day After" is up on youtube - it will give you a sense of what a REAL threat is - and it understated the aftermath.

Today, they talk about the threat of a low grade nuclear device in a major city - compare that to a full out nuclear war.

Nuclear weapons will always be "the" threat - look at the reaction to N Korea having a handful.

The Germans put almost as many resources into the development of their rocket program as the US did into the Manhattan Project.

The fact is that they did not put a "uranium device" as a priority, and no one really pushed Hitler to make it a priority. The Norwegian resistance in 1943 (with the help and guidance of the allies - a good 3 part clip is on youtube describing it) destroyed the small amount of "heavy water" (deuterium oxide) that was produced in Norway. That was in effect, the end.

The allies and Norwegian resistance did not acquire heavy water in the raids, they destroyed it. To my understanding, heavy water was used as a "neutron separator" - the Manhattan Project discovered a process that used purified graphite for shielding. The allies also had a plant in Canada that produced heavy water.

I watched this landmark series in London during the 70's and it follows the progression from John Terraine's " the great war " and a BBC seies from Versailles to the beginning of the war. "World at war"-serie has big minus. It was made in 70's and it handled Stalin's Sovjet Union with silky gloves. In 1924 Sovjet leaders made decision to take countries like baltic, Finland and Poland back under Sovjet control in first possible chance. Stalin used Hitler as "icebreaker".

THE german / prussian march is called: "Preußens Gloria" or "Glory of Prussia" in english, writen by Gottfried Piefke.

Then you have "Der Hohenfriedberger" / "The Hohenfriedberger", writen by King Friedrich II. of Prussia, the "bayrischer Defiliermarsch" / "bavarian defilliermarch", writen by Adolf Scherzer and, very special the "Des Großen Kurfürsten Reitermarsch" / the great Prince-Elector's horserider-march, writen by Lieutenant General Count Kuno von Moltke!
