yes i went to cmu during this time period and these were some of the best times of my college life. frank allison was a complete blast through and through. i will never forget those days.
Assuming my minority role in life, I confess to discovering FA&TO through my turntable. I bought "Cupid's Retreat" on 45 then did some pre Google research and bought whatever Lp's the guy there in Ann Arbor had on the shelf. Last copy and Frank signed it. Went full tilt and bought all the Cd's. I bought extra copies and sent them to my local college station but sadly- they didn't 'get it' . I hear Frank in Nirvana's "Fire Lake" and think he has royalties due.
about 1:45 into this documentary, my old roommates and great friends, katie finn and paula garcia are seen dancing. last time i saw frank he played solo at my wedding. then i see this thing and it seems like i just saw him a few minutes ago.
odd sox were the nicest players in town.
frank and i traded a few myspace emails about a year ago. i guess he's singing again.
(And its been some years now, but wasn't your wedding party wedding held in the yard of a home on the Old West Side? I think I recall you also had Ivan playing too--or was he just there as a guest?)
I'd dearly love to see the footage from the entire show at the Blind Pig used in the documentary too.
Beautiful. I saw dozens of Frank 'n' Sox shows in Ann Arbor in the late 80s and early 90s, and they were always a joy. I'd encourage the uninitiated to snap up any available copies of Monkey Business and Hokey Smoke - pure pop pleasure.
This was an awesome little documentary that communicated the special something that was occurring. I was touched by this band through the brilliance of this little film.
Thank You for posting this! I didnt get to make it to the film fest when this played & now I can see it here!
Hmmm - is that Blind Pig footage from the actual 'Pig Out' cd? From the snippets I hear of 'Rodent of Love' and 'Jay' it sure sounds like it! Great stuff!
I'm pretty sure most of that Blind Pig footage was stuff I shot at that same show! I remember the recording setup in the corner while we were there, so it very well could be.
very cool - not a whole lot of odd sox vids around. I have one from the infamous "Frank Aid" show, thats it. I have a fair amount of later-day live tapes which I really need to transfer from DAT before I forget how too :)
What a great video! Glad to see that so many other people remember and love the music of Frank and the Sox as much as we do. We'll never forget the day they played at our wedding. It was awesome!
I don't think a week has gone by since I left Ann Arbor that I haven't listen to a Frank song. Watching this movie I got a lump in my throat as big as a 20 gal tank. We have not heard the last from Frank A - you can't keep that much talent down.
This is wonderful! The film is very well done, it really catches the excitement that surrounded the band. The scene and energy at Frank Allison shows was one that I have never seen before or since. Thanks for posting this, this is a great tribute to my favorite band ever!
That is really well made. In 9 minutes I went from "never heard of 'em" to being a fan. You kept it about them, with no self-reference. I was curious about who a couple of the talking heads were. It may have added something to suggest some musical context
such as comparing them to Bare Naked Ladies, etc. However, overall - I give it an "A".
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This brings back so many great memories from The Blind Pig.

My brother-in-law is the guitarist, Dan Beckett, I grew up with the songs. I think they deserve way more recognition then they get.
