hey man good video but do your self a favor and learn the "iron pipe size "nominal measurements so folks ask for the right stuff at the store. 1/2 id ,5/8 od threaded pipe and fittings is 1/2 inch I.P.S ,just a plumbers input
@soverato3 You can scale the idea but not the parts. If your going to have a small liquid engine you really don't need to cool it, you just cant run it for a long time and you will probably have to build in some type of heatsink to dissipate some of the heat. You don't need liquid oxygen for a liquid fueled engine you can use gas, the only reason they use it on real rockets is because you can carry much more than gaseous. If I were you I would do a lot more research before building.
@M4DJE ok.. i want to make a 2stage giant rocket with a liquid fueled engine as second stage. i was thinking of using liquid oxigen and liquid butane or propane but if you think rc car fuel (25%nitro?) will work better... ill give it a try! :D thnx for the info i will let you know when i have tested it :D the engine is nearly done
so testing can start soon =) its a V-2 based engine but scaled down to +- 50kg thrust (hopefully haha)
I have been trying to make this however, Where do you buy your oxygen tanks. My local store only sells benzomatic tanks but they do not have hoses, just torch attachments.
@1234567890col I used a medical oxygen tank for the videos but later upgraded to welding oxygen tanks. You can sometimes find full oxygen tanks at flea markets. Other than that the only option are Benzomatic mapp gas and oxygen welding kits at some hardware stores but they are getting hard to find.
@1234567890col With this engine I ran oxygen tanks with Liter per minute increments and I would usually run it at about 15 LPM. With something like this I would recommend buying a gas, specifically an oxygen flow meter rather than using a pressure gauge.
@TheJMAN12365 This particular engine isn't made for model rockets, there just simply is not enough power. I will eventually get some videos up on larger homemade engines but other hobbies have taken priority.
Just a little advice, if you can find some nitrous oxide then use it. Oxygen can be unstable, it works but when it goes wrong it goes wrong big time. Plus nitrous oxide self regulates to last longer ect.
@FlyHighRC386 Not much, probably less than a half pound, if even that. Its was mainly built to give people an idea on how to build hybrid engines and what the basic fundamentals of a hybrid engine are. This summer I will probably be posting videos on much larger engines that are somewhat useful.
@k0namiman I have but I didn't for two reasons. The first one is that if I were to go through the trouble of getting a nozzle machined I may as well and build a good large engine. The second is that its mainly meant as a demo and a learning experience to get people started on larger more complex designs.
@recon1283 First off you cant ignite oxygen, its an oxidizer. Second, you don't necessarily need polyethylene specifically you can pretty much use anything as a fuel. But polyethylene tube is widely available and able to be easily put into small engines.
@LEONIDASTREEHUNDRED All rockets have a high risk of exploding, A rocket is just a controlled, directed explosion. It's a risk one takes when hobbying with rocketry.
@19adobe20wv I doesn't necessarily have to be brass, I just used it because of its wide availability and cheap price. I personally haven't experimented with anything else besides stainless steel so I wouldn't know first hand what you can and cant use, but I would say your fine with anything except copper. Finally if your getting much bigger Id suggest testing it remotely or behind a shield in case it over pressurizes and explodes.
Have you considered makeing a liquard fuel setup? Im guessing it will require a bit more thought obv as youl need some sort of regulator to pre mix the fuel and air but you seem to have the skills :P
@nickoswoos I have all the equipment and materials to make a liquid fueled engine, but at the moment all of my money and time is going to my fusor so that project is going to be a little down the road. Maybe in a year or so I will finally get around to building one.
@szuszi2 Yes that is about the average price for a small oxygen tank and they are usually 10 or 15 cubic feet I believe. I have 5 of them and it took me a lot of saving to get them. Some times you can find them at flea markets but you usually have to have them inspected if they have passed their "expiration" date and then get them filled.
@szuszi2 you can also try going to a hospitol or any sort of medical practice (a dentist for example) and ask for some low/empty o2 tanks. i had a connection with someone so that probably helped but its worth a shot to ask
Okay, so today I went to purchase the parts and was all set with assembling it. I sort of tweaked some dimensions, because my local hardware store did not have the certain dimensions you enlisted. I also bought some polyethylene tubes for the fuel source. Would an air compressor release oxygen or no? I tried it the exact way you showed, but still no results. The fire just lit when it was being ignited by the torch, but once I removed it, it died out. Would I need pure oxygen to make it work?
@vignesh12300 No, it is primarily sodium stearate. But the beauty of the hybrid engine is you can use pretty much anything as a fuel, at least anything that is solid and can be lit on fire (you can use liquid but then that would be a liquid fueled engine). You can use glue sticks but you would have to make it into a tube so the oxygen can pass through it. I have used many fuels in this engine and the reason I recommended polyethylene is because it is easy to use in it compared to other fuels.
@szuszi2 You can buy oxygen at welding supply stores or you can make it by electrolysis but then you would have to compress it and that could be very hard for the average person.
@jrbpyro101 Thank you! I was trying to make this, but I was having difficulties finding a source of polyethylene. I will ask more questions if I need it.
@jrbpyro101 sorry for the speling. but can i make one which flys?because the gasoline explodes last time in the tests boom shit was crazy i have burnt all my fingers and created a new bomb. the plastic bottle had burnt in seconds!
@OldSnakeKonovesis Of course you can make one fly but you need to be careful about what you make it out of. Rockets usually take a bit of time to be able to determine how to build one properly.
Impressive. However, I've been trying to figure out a simple way to have the rocket carry its own propellant but allow me to release the oxidizer from a distance. (other than pulling a string)
Well if you are very familiar with electronics that can be easily pulled off, otherwise it might not be that easy. The easiest way to put it you would need a solenoid valve, some controller electronics, and a wireless receiver and transmitter. You would hook something like that up so you can wirelessly open a solenoid vale form the oxidizer tank to the combustion chamber
You need to make a Pyro Paste, Take Acetone-Pinpon balls-Gun Power-Magnesium, Mix it all together and you get a paste that will harden like epoxy and will burn very fast with just a lighter. Use this mix to cover a small hole that leads to your oxidizer, (Compressed Oxidizer/Fitting w/hole/ Pyro over the hole) Allow the mix to dry (Over night) then use some steel wool with a 9 volt battery with a little wet pyro on it and when it starts to burn inside your fuel area it will release the oxidizer
