I What this appears to be is a new epistemological 'theory of everything'. Tarnas has here a very dense subject matter carefully crafted so as not to over state the idea. To me, science has shown the follies of religion and yet has reached the limit of its method. Tarnas, suggests that a deeper understanding and use of synchronicity needs to be employed. In a recent interview Tarrnas was a friend of Terrance Mckenna. This work resonates with Mckenna's social observations.
Tarnas can be a little windy at times, but what he says is right on. The dualistic notion of Self as separate from Cosmos was a necessary step in the evolutionary individuation process for humanity. But we must now learn to re-integrate the Self with the Cosmos, understanding ourselves to be expressions of the same force that churns the heavens. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, Redlit/Matthew, thanks for reading this! I don't believe in astrology, but in the mythic meaning. Alan Watts said how he liked the image of the astrological chart as a picture of the human soul -- parallel, at one with, the universe. Are you aware of the planet archetypes in Kabbalah? Example: the 8th Sephiroth, Hod, is associated with the planet Mercury -- as well as the Messenger God -- and hence represents language and science -- Thought. I could go on... ^_^
It's more archetypes, not really astrology. There are 10 emanations, Spheres/Sephiroth, from #1, God/the Ultimate -- winding down to #10, the physical world, Earth. The 9th is the Moon = the Unconscious. 7th is Venus, planet/goddess, Love and Feeling = across from #8's Thought! The Sun is in #6 which represents the Soul, Christ figures. Mars is in #5, Strength and Severity. #4, Mercy, is Jupiter, King Gods. See: Strength & Severity opposite each other!
Oops, I meant Severity and Mercy are opposite each other: the spheres/energies across from each other balance one another. As with Thought and Feeling; too much of one is bad.
There's a Stickam group you might like. Atheists, Theists, and Mythists discussions. Room is: Together4Peace, I can message you the password.
