  • Just magnificently beautiful! Saw Mr. Ling on CBS News last night and wanted to find out more about his work. Very cool indeed.

  • gay

  • This guy is not a genius ! Who is he kidding...There isn't anything great, authentic or even findamentally artistic about his work....geez....bottom -o- the barrel DWELL!

  • A waterfall does not a "master piece" define....nor do his efforts deserve any admiration....sorry... I love his nod to IM pei...and his choice of eye wear...again however not authentic in any way. Poor execution...raw and bohemian can be lovely...but I don't find this so.

I have read so many comments here and can not understand what inspiration these people are referring to...help?

  • I think Ling's loft is an amazing space...I live in his neighborhood and along with other neighbors appreciate the raw facade of the building which is original from 1800's I read in the New York Times. The blue wall beside the waterfall is superb design at its best. Actually met him once while walking by and started a conversation about his space which led to an impromptu invite inside - very gracious man with great talent not just as an architect but as an interior designer as well.

  • David Ling's home is part architecture, part interior design, part sculpture....Poetic video of an intensely personal space by an architect who used the opportunity to experiment with water and light. I like how the video captured the reflection of the water onto the ceilings and walls. I've never seen anything like it before or since. I like his use of old and new, the different textures, and the fact that he allows there to be a sense of rawness and elegance that work together.

  • Furthermore, since being scrooge in itself is not enough, he also demands them to clean his lovely fountain, and answer "Yes David" to any sentence he might be saying. Given all this, it seems like the only thing that connects Mr. Ling to architectural discourse is his glasses. Aside from this he might be better off at an S/M club.

  • Well as much as mister David Ling might be wealthy (from what I heard he drives a Porche and owns quite a few weekend houses) he prefers not paying to his employees (all are trained architects).

  • I absolutely love his loft... awesome. I built myself a 10 ft queen-size loft bed to free up some space... and I thought that was something.

  • classic problem: guy with to much money!

  • wow, he must be an architect because he's wearing those 'Le Corbusier glasses'.

  • haha of course, all famous/pretentious designers have to wear those. it's in the job description.

  • ...look for the glasses of Philip Johnson... (also an architect ;-))

  • whut a moron....

  • i like at home with owen better. eluvium makes this video fun to watch.

  • Cool dude. you must be a wild

  • True, there is a large difference there. It's clear now that your point is stronger than mine, so I concede ^^.

One query, and this is out of genuine ignorance, how would you discern whether or not the piece in question was "art" in such a situation?

  • Well, you're tweaking my statement slightly there. My point was that if that state was the objective, then is it fair to say it lacks craftsmanship?

I'm not a craftsman myself though, so I do speak from an uninformed outsider's perspective.

Don't worry, it's a good response. Usually when someone refutes a point of mine they become rude and belligerent. I'm glad to see you're above that, its rare ^^.

  • But if its purposeful, is it really poor?

  • He is presenting a positive image, be it not deep. Perhaps people were expecting more, the comments are hostile towards him. Let us just say that you are probably jealous of him and you seek to grind your axe. Why the aggression? The glasses? The house? The words? It's only a video, you can stop watching it.

  • I knew I had seen those glasses before!

  • So to be an Architect all i have to do is only do things half assed and call it "artistic", and use words like "layered"....fuck off ling ling

  • To be an architect, no, certainly not. To create "art" all you necessarily have to do is create something using your personal creativity, yes. Creating something takes real effort mind you.

  • Oh. I forgot. That means he's "original".

  • Sorry. I can't get past the glasses.

  • I really like most of this, but from a practical point of view I think that having a bed directly above a water fall will lead to a lot of extra bathroom visits, at least until one gets used to it.

  • David Ling is an innovative inspiration.

  • david ling is a genius

  • "I froze after getting rid of all the radiators..."

You have got to be kidding me - good thing he didnt remove the air from his living space (or not).

    ;)

  • Riiiiiiiiiiight....

  • lol, yea I it just amazed me that someone would remove all the home heating sources and not realize that the house would no longer be 'warm' during the winter.

At least he learned from his mistake, so that counts for something.

    ;)

  • what was the background piano music you had playing?

  • eluvium is the name of the pianist (matthew cooper)

  • One must be crazy to hire this guy.

  • That's a bomb bed.

  • Until you roll off into the flooded pool below...

  • Ha!

You have to be sober and childless your whole life.

Little low on comfort level :-)

  • hahaha... excellent comment! ;-)

  • huh?? cheesy reproductions as far as furniture goes, a majority of crap i've seen in second-hand stores, and a worn out base on a tacky indoor waterfall??

i guess i missed the point

  • Nice

  • coolness!

  • Lovely house and interesting man.

  • nice vid 5/5.. check mine out

  • that place is so sick

  • i would kill for that place downtown.

  • I am sorry, This house looks like any crack house in philly. Bust a pipe and call it home. What is up with the exposed wires? lol

  • cool urinal

  • wow stfu spawn who made u to be the judge. u barely know the guy, how do u no he is sad and gay? just cause his house is a lot cooler than yours? besides he is a designer.

  • what in the hell are you talking about.

  • very very cool

  • zomg itz harry potter

  • weird

  • Wow. This is beautifully done, not only the archetecture of the house but the way you guys captured it. It was amazingly done. Great job.

  • Another rich pretentious New York.

  • He's definitely dedicated.

  • harry potter glasses! HAHAA

  • LOL! chinese version

  • Actually, there is an episode of Seinfeld about those glasses that is hilarious.

  • bedroom is hanging!?

  • imagine you roll down at night.

  • I LOVE his place! I wish I could live in a place like that, although I'd have to have a TV. I thought the bath/shower space was very cool!

  • thats a pretty awesome house

  • nice glasses!:P I want that house, but I would get a gator in the moat for sure :D

  • wow that house is a work of art and very sophisticated, love his glasses by the ways haha i cant stop looking at them!

  • 00:40 Confucked'd?

  • Confronted.

    Good try.

  • lolz confrunted, would of been better if it was confucked lol

  • I like that house. I might have to get my house designed like that..

  • i swear i thought this was gunna be a harry potter parody... wow was i wrong

  • I don't like it. It's something you can look at but not made to really live in. In a way it's a piece of art but sterile at the same time.

  • WERD

  • Really cool place, really weird guy, horrible glasses.

  • I would be afraid to sleep in that bed...

  • I like how its unique but wouldnt the constant water moisture ruin the furnature and paint or causing damp in the walls?

  • why is this in the spotlight

  • since when did Edna Mode have time to make a place like this. you would think that she's way too busy designing superhero costumes...

  • WTF WITH THOSE GLASSES?

  • ahaha i love how im not the only one thinking about being drunk in that house and things just going wrong hahaha. i would be throwing parties and and all kinds of events!

  • That is exactly what I was thinking.

Imagine trying to get across the step stones to the stairs drunk.

  • hey, thats a funky loft you have, i really think it's kool and it fits the person.. i would so loose all my pillows, with them falling into the water.. awesome house i think it's kool... and just coz some one has a vision of spacial awareness don't hate them at the end of the day he lives there not anyone else.. and he's not impossing it apon anyone.. get a grip on reality people.. ps: nice job again.

  • cant get that rough in the bed then... might yoduldooldo all the way down. atleast there'll be a neat splash, not a total loss.

  • Are those glasses for real?

  • Lahey is a drunk bastard

  • imagine coming home totally wasted and going through all that water. you'd drown in your own waterfall moat shit!

  • the guy

    pretentious

    the pad

    zomfg.

  • Architects are the most pompous group of over dramatic, self absorbed idiots second only to successful actors in their over-inflated sense of self worth. Talk about spending your life focusing on frivolous nonsense. Give me a break. This guy is ridiculous. And somebody PLEASE tell him to lose the dumb ass glasses.

  • Indeed...

  • Ah it's a snooze. I have seen better, cleaner, places.

  • awesome, very different. but also... the vid gives kind of seems a little too dramatic for a living space. sure it's totally awesome, but some people are living in their cars, and others aren't even that lucky...meh. neat loft. bed should have some safety bars or something though.

  • nice cool interesting =)

  • Very cool. Loves the glasses too!

  • You havent been to San Francisco..This apartment is nothing compared to what i have seen..That's NOT the coolest apartment ever..You will be amazed by these high tech guys' apartments..

  • this guy has too much money and time on his hands

  • o my gosh! he's not afraid of falling down from his 10 feet without any boundaries above the water bed???

  • That must cost a fortune to heat but it looks great - I always wanted my own music studio with automatic doors like on Star Trek and rounded forms like Roger Dean used to make

  • Can you handle my channel?...

  • she's a very nice lady. you would like her.

  • Damn, I was hoping for more waterfalls and such. My dream since I was a kid was to have calming water effect consumer my house. Love your stuff David, now MORE WATER! WOOOOOHOO!!

  • "consume" that it....freudian slip.

  • "that is" I meant, damnit!!

  • beautiful execution. What a wonderful way to live.

  • Love it! He's a bit nutty....

  • Well done. Impressive digs, presented with an impressive video. Nice symbiosis. Thanks for sharing.
