it's because he looks the ball always, even after it was hitten, to be sure where it goes. First rule in this game: look the ball, don't make anything instinctively, though you are sure of your strokes, the most simples too.
Ever notice how his head stays down for a split second after he hits the ball? I've noticed that in his slowmo videos as well. He's one of the very few people, even at the pro level that does that...I guess it helps keep focus on the ball through contact. I am trying to incorporate that into my game but it almost feels like you're hitting the ball blindly.
You are supposed to do that only on a single handed backhand in order to prevent you from rotating your trunk and opening up. If you open up the ball goes high and wide. Also I would sink down on my knees more when hitting the ball for a stronger backhand

actually thats what you are supposed to. keep your eyes on the ball and have your head still. thats why federer is so good
