well done, especially if you do have the ear to notice the small flaws in your performance. i do not mean to be rude or patronizing, but that kind of trained ear is needed to make real progress.
If you can keep it up and not get demoralized (I did) you have the makings of a fine bass player.
for what it is worth the 40th anniversary of my taking up the bass is coming up next month, 1972, my first year in high school
that is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! amazing and that semiquaver passage towards the end (after the trills after the cadenza) was faster, crisper, more accurate and more clear than streichers recording
Outstanding job. I can tell that you have a great future. I'm also a bass player and hope you and others get to play on the big theaters. We need more bass!!! Just one thing: you seemed to be a little shy at the beginning. I liked your attitude at the end. Maybe you can use some of that over the whole piece. It's not crucial but it's entertaining to see someone that can play as great as you and express those feelings at the same time. Good luck.
Thank you very much for the compliments. I am 18 and in my first year of study at the Curtis Institute of Music with Hal Robinson and Edgar Meyer, but my teacher a the time of this video was John Pellegrino.
John's a great teacher, I worked with him a bit two summers ago! Fantastic job on this concerto and congrats on getting into Curtis. It's really hard to get into there especially considering that both Hal and Edgar play French bow
oh, and f*** the naysayers. they're just mad because they're 30 years old and still playing for the community volunteer orchestra in hastings, Nebraska.
very very nice. Intonation is spot on, and the rhythms are very accurate. The orchestra did a good job at not playing over you at all, made sure we could all hear that wonderful tone of yours. bravo.
The Bel Canto Chamber Orchestra accompanying Nate was made up of high school and middle school students. It was a "conductorless" orchestra - other than Nate's leading while performing. Nate, you were fabulous then and your even more fab now!
First--Sometimes your shifting can be a little to quick and that takes away from the phrases you are trying to create. Second--The sound in the lower register is very thick. Try to apply this to the upper register, the sounds seems weak sometimes. This could also be caused by the quickness of your virbato it can choke some up the high notes. awsome job man!
I really enjoyed your performance! Your sound is extremely beautiful! I have no understanding of German bow posture, but it seems to work fine for you! Who are you currently studying with?
Hey youre a great bass player. I really dont understand why everyone is being so harsh. You should really ignore them though because that was a great performance.
try changing the tempo and dynamics ONCE in a while...It's a piece of music not an etude. It sounds like you're playing with metronome...There is no freedom at all.
actually this sounds amazing. how old are you, 17? incredible. even if this is not the most musical performance ever, you have plenty of time to develop that. in fact i think you are still very ahead of the game. don't apologize to these jerks because they are just jealous of you. good luck with everything.
You mean on my bowhand? Oh that's how I am taught to play, sorry. It's not painful at all. It's actually quite comfortable, and I find it is easier to get a solid sound that way. Sometimes there will be incidental accents or scratches on notes if i move my wrist too much
His bow grip is perfectly fine especially for someone who plans on playing orchestral repertoire. His tone is wonderful and it certainly allows him to play this concerto better than almost anyone on youtube.
steve having heard both of you play...you have absolutely no room to talk. if you think that cutting people down on youtube makes you a better player, think again. get off the internet and get in a practice room, you need it more than this kid.
I must say that you have such a mature tone for your age. I noticed a huge improvement from your Tarentella video to this performance. Will you be attending the ISB? I am a student at the school hosting it this year. So I will surely be there and hopefully I'll have to chance to here you play live. Take Care.

Awesome job! When did you start playing? It seems as though your mind was steeped in music from a young age.

actually you have NO wrist movement, and it really chokes the sound.

your grip looks very tight and painful. try loosening your wrist.

Nate, question...Did you think playing this as fast as possible would make musical sense?
Any Bottesini close to the five minute marker sounds like an etude, no matter how in tune, or in rhythm it is.
HeySteveBass 3 years ago
Sorry Steve. It seemed to lose energy when I took it much slower. I guess I'm just not as musical as you. What did you think of it besides the tempo?
