So far this is my favorite version of this aria on YouTube, having listened to Callas, Sutherland, Fleming, Gruberova, and Bartoli, and Anderson besides Sumi Jo. Anderson's is great too, but Sumi Jo really knocks it out of the park with her sensitive and gorgeous rendition here IMHO, despite the horrible costume. Great makeup, though, and love the fake eyelashes!

Brava, Sumi Jo! Listening to you brightened my afternoon. She really has the "feel" for bel canto. I love the bell tones in the reprise of "Sovra il sen la man mi posa," the only other artist I've heard to this was Callas. Also, her voice is exactly right for this role (I will refrain from mentioning the sopranos who sing this role whose voices, in my opinion, are not at all right for it.

Tú si que no tienes ni idea de canto en general. Cómo puedes decir que "esta china" se cree que el belcanto consiste en agregar sobreagudos.. y demás cosas absurdas que dices. Pues esta china de la que hablas es una de las grandes voces de nuestro planeta. Y cualquier persona aunque no sepa de esto, podría decir que tiene una técnica maravillosa, asombrosa y escasa, pero el analfabetismo es una epidemia, es evidente.

El objetivo de que en las cabalettas de las cavatinas del S. XIX exista una reexposición del tema tal cual, es simplemente para agregarle coloraturas. No puedes exponer A B B... Se muere de aburrimiento el público. Los adornas surgen de la necesidad de hacer algo nuevo: A B B' .

Te sugiero que veas temas con variaciones para piano de Mozart y veas que ocurre cuando las frases se repiten, es algo que está en estilo...

Además, no por algo Ricordi editó los libros de variaciones, cadenza y tradición.

haha! of course, Sumi's voice is spectacular, but can you imagine the first time she saw that hat? She probably looked at it and thought "Wow. I didn't know this was a comedy." I don't know if I'd be able to take my performance as seriously in that thing :-P

Questa Sumi Jo ogni volta che la sento mi stupisce, è una macchina da guerra. tecnicamente perfetta e il suo italiano è formidabile. Ci vorrebbe solo un buon direttore che le dicesse come cantare le variazioni, non devono essere fatte "a piacere" suo ma a piacere della musica. La musica non serve ma si serve.

In ogni caso brava Sumi Jo.

Since posting the above three months ago, Yoplait has begun running a commercial here in the USA of two bridesmaids eating yogurt IN THIS EXACT DRESS, who both laugh when one of them says how happy she'll be to burn the dress! Meanwhile, check out the clip of Cecilia Bartoli singing this aria at Carnegie Hall. Hands down the most glorious rendition of it I've ever heard--and from a mezzo!
