Years ago I took my Newfoundland, Barney, on a road trip up the California coast. On our first stop, he bolted for the surf and I couldn't get him out for a full hour.
brilliant,i have a 16 month old male newfie now 11 stone and god he is soooo strong,we dont walk on the cliffs as he will try to drag me off them and into the sea, such beautiful, clever gentle dogs ,our friend has one and can pull a life boat in the sea
lol this is amazing, they are called newfoundland dogs for a reason, and if you check the story behind it(to those leaving stupid comments of abuse) they are very strong and smart dogs, this is normal for them, pure water dogs id love to have one wife would too but cant afford one, not a pure breed anyways so we are going with a golden retriever i seen pups for sale for 250 i think thats pretty cheap. wish i had a newfie though my 3 year old would love him for sure
Newfoundlands are actually considered to be the strongest dogs in the world, even beating some of the characteristics of the Great Dane and the Mastiff.
I grew up with one of these dogs in finland, he was a rather lazy type but oh soo adorable and he loved riding in our car and yes swimming was a favorite thing also.. aah memories.. he got 12 years old..
Yes they love the water, they actually have webbed feet ,I had a newf/lab mix,the most lovable ,stubborn smartest sweetest dog I ever had,it's been 7 years since he passed away ,I still miss him soo very much, everytime I see another one like him I cry :( I now have 3 mutts and they can't compare to him!!!
all retrievers have webbed feet for the record. and sorry to hear that, i recently lost two of my dogs, a lab, and a pomeranian. although we have a new lab, we will never forget our passed away family members.
you know legend has it that it was a newfoundland dog that swam out across the raging surf with a lifeline between its teeth to save the stranded passengers & crew on the s.s. ethie. thats a great dog!
My dog is a 3 yr old Newfoundland dog and I'm actually a Newfoundlander. I'm 250lbs and he can pull me around out in my drive way he almost killed me.
mine dog cannot. when it did before it almost drownded, we had to get the special horse keeper from the farm in to save it. I would advice you not to let any dog near water.
humm not sure what that hapend but Newfoundland dogs are know'n for rescue dogs they even jump out of hellacopters, they haves saved a lot of lives getting in the water, and my nan had a golden Lab he all ways went into the ocean to fetch his stic so ... thats who know not all dogs are the same
most dogs can swim, and most dogs love being in the water.. trust, ive had dogs all my life.. but yeah you do get dogs that cant swim or hate the water
Do you coat them with som special dog oils first>? The probleem with my dog was that it was not bouyant enough, thats what the rescue workers said anyway.
it was trying to bite the water to stay in it up flot!
TrevorMcinsley; Don't keep a Newfoundland away from the water. 99.999999% of them can swim, very few of them can't. They have webbed feet and are built for cold and swimming and water rescue.
My dogs are not newfoundland dogs, they are some type of cat-fox hybrid from asia, as such they do not like the wet or the damp or the dry. They are angry all of the time and like to reap the rewards of a successful business management scenario but without any slapstick and they dont like him either or charlie chaplin or you. I like you. Do you like you?
That was great...I know it takes a lot of time and effort to train any animal and I glad to see there are people that care..but im sorry I LMAO at this..is going in my favs!!!
Umm, yeah, they are STRONG!!! And they do indeed love the water - I swear they have gills hidden under all of their fur. I grew up with 2, and they are truly a handful but a blessing even more. Nice vid, and I love the Benny Hill soundtrack!
Not sure if you're a dog owner, but when you have one. You know which is your's.
To the untrained eye they may seem to look very similiar. Although after spending enough time with one you'll know it's face just like any other member of the family.
Uhhh... Newfie dogs were BRED for water rescue and to pull barges - they actually have webbed feet! Besides, a LOT of dog breeds are made for water - Portugese Water Dogs (duh), Labradors and Goldens (most retrievers, actually), Poodles (that's where that weird haircut comes from, to keep the joints warm in cold water during the hunt) and others; they are ALL in water sport competitions. The only "abuse" in this video is the dog dragging the master... and your idiotic comment, of course...

I am sorry, I was clearly very wrong to make this comment, the dogs in fact do 'like all the wet etiher'.
I have recently changed my views on the matter due to a life changing experience involving a blender, an ice machine and a handful of puppies. Turns out they don't like being cold AND wet though. Tasty!
@nysteve35 um... please do your homework... and I think I saw most of those guys getting dragged in,...yah, they sooooooooooo don't want to go into the water :P besides, this isn't a sport... they are getting trained to be life guards. I know this is like the umpteenth statement, but I hate when people cry wolf on animal abuse
i clean pools in california and one of my customers had a newfie. one day i accidently let her out and it took all my strength and the better part or 10 mins to drag her back into the back yard. very strong, very gorgeous animals, probably not the brightest though :)
lol i also had a very hard time keeping her out of the pool while i was trying to clean it, but she never seemed to get on my nerves cuz it was just so damn cute to see her swimming around begging me to jump in. im sure the owners had a few laughs at my expense looking out their window seeing me trying to work around this huge dog in the pool. so yes they are very strong and yes they LOVE water. when i can afford a house ill probably get one
wtfizthis, newfies are highly intelligent animals. but as you can see even in this video they LOOOVE water and they instinctively are drawn to it. Will he eat disregarded severed limbs?
I ask because I work at a hospital and we really are stuck for ideas with what to do with all the amputated limbs, ever since the incinerator broke we've just been giving them to the homeless, or anyone who asks for one really. But apparently that's 'illegal' or some crap so we've had to stop. Reckon your dog could take care of them?
hahaha yes, we have two and i have been dragged face first through the sand by one of them!! they are both incredibly strong and love water, but you've got to love them!!
My sister came to visit me years ago and wanted to take the Leash of my beloved Newfie Picton. We were on the top of a snow covered hill when a kid started down on a slay. Picton wanted a ride to and ran down the hill behind the kid. My sister got the ride of her life...she never let go...she probably should have...funniest thing I have ever seen!
I Have Never Seen a Newfie do this, It's Hilarious though! If anything my Newfie, Lilly, Prefers to swim in a Pool. If she Can't see the bottom of the water, she won't Go In. If she was in this Video, She'd Be running the other direction!
I loved this video! Those of us Newfie owners who have been dragged into the water countless times by our newfies definitely can feel for those owners! Nothing could keep my old Newfie Buddy out of the water.
Lol.. Newfies are Strong.. i got 4 of them! Lol.. and yes newfielanders are smart.. just cause we can outtalk u dosent mean where dumb.. GER "R" DONE!
Absolutely loved this video! Had to share it with my daughter...we have a 8 week old Newf so I just had to show her what was in store this summer at the Lake!

Hysterical! My newfie only prefers the bathtub! I swear she is the only one and at 125 lbs she would do better in a lake!
