@Nutintoitbut2doit Hey what's up! You know, it just might work! My sign could read "heat pump steam therapy, every 90 minutes (weather and run time permitting)" LOL!!
@dizziedallas Thank You Dallas!! I finally got lucky. The conditions and timing were just right that morning. It had been warm and rainy the day before, then it turned cold again overnight so there was plenty of moisture for the steam show!!
@iworkforbudlight Hey thanks man!! Oh it does, all hours of the day and night!! I live three miles away so I only hear it off in the distance, it doesn't keep me up or anything.
Great Video, Im glad you finally got the coleman defrosting, one sunday morning at my chuch one of the two goodmans were defrosting and the steam of the one defrosting was drifing into the airstream of the other on and propeling it up the side of the buildind i did not have a camera with me.
@js0009 Thank You my friend!! Me too!! Now I can just let it do it's thing and I don't have to be on guard for a defrost cycle anymore! Wow, that sounds awesome!! Keep trying, you will eventually catch it doing that again sometime.
@rotarycomptech Hey Dave! I remember that video of your Ducane defrosting, that's an awesome video!! Thanks for posting it as a response, that is too cool Brother!!
@canonfs40user Hey Carson!! It was my lucky day for sure. I have been trying to catch it for a long time. Everything was perfect today. It went into defrost 6 minutes after I started filming and it was slow enough at work that I could stay back there with it to film the whole process. Yeah, it is too cold for heat pumps where you live isn't it. I don't use this one when we have really cold (below freezing) weather. The gas wall heater works better for those days.
Lol oh man I pushed the inappropriate button by accident in response to yah Ray" nothing bad here gosh!! Anyhow nope all the ol venerable GE's are gone now all replaceed with gas furnace's mostly and a hodgepodge of junk box's outside too and some decent stuff. But folk's ol 1989 Trane heatpump system is still there and running. Our system was resized and it was twice the size of builders special!!
@MegaRadio90 You did fine Mike! It takes a little practice! I still hit the wrong button sometimes too!! That's great, the 1989 Trane heatpump system will probably keep on for many more years!
And that was some serious defrost Ray! It sure was frosted up and there was a great amount of vapour from it. If you saw it from a distance you would think it was smoke.
I loved seeing the train. Almost something you can never grow out of. Enjoyed them as a kid and still enjoy them now.
@TheOldkid888 Hey Al ! I caught it on the perfect day , been trying to for a couple of years now! Ever since I changed the defrost timer to 90 min, it has been really hard to catch a defrost cycle!
Cool! I get to watch the trains go by everyday, all day!! I do enjoy seeing all the different cars and engines that pass through here. The graffiti on the cars is sometimes interesting too!
@84randomdude oh yeah i do them as well but the sound of the diesels is awesome, especially when they have 6 engines in line pulling a 1.5 mile long train up a hill, they really get those v16's turning! but the steam engine weighed 1,000's of tons on their own, it was a miracle how long of train they could move considering the actual locomotive made up for 1/4 of the weight! but diesels out weigh them in every aspect expect for weight competitions!
@AVTreasures yeah where i used to live was about 1/2 or more from the tracks and i could see the trains ride along the track and hear the horns very clearly, now i live father away and miss the sound but i wouldn't want to be that close as it would be too noisy for me
Hey Ray" get a neighborhood full of heat pumps and you have a reversing valve symphony & compressors humming away as well too! it's a very strange but funny sound to hear to here in a mass situation. Those old GE weathertron heat pump's in my neighborhood as a kid could really whale sometimes. Lol... loved it man brought back a very good memory of sight & sound of a heat pump doing its thing. :)
@MegaRadio90 Hey Mike! That sounds cool!! A whole neighborhood with GE Weathertrons!! I bet there are a few of them still running in that neighborhood too! Great, I am glad you enjoyed the video Mike! Thanks for the great comment!
once a unit starts to ice over over it will go real fast as ice is a good insulator, and nice quiet unit, haven't heard of a coleman heat pump but seems of decent quality
@xctome Hey Mike!! Thanks man! It was pretty good wasn't it! I'm glad I caught a real defrost cycle and not one of those "dry coil" ones like I used to get when it was set for 60 min. defrost intervals. Thanks Mike!! I appreciate the kind words my friend!
Hey Ray !!! Damn Trains !!! LOL ... You finally Caught the ole Gal !!! I know you have been on a Mission !!! Ray that was the Best Defrost Video I have Ever Seen !!! Startin to End !!! Great Job Brother , I know it was Eatin at ya !!! Now its gonna Eat at Me , I have never Caught Mine !!! LOL ... Damn Trains !!! LOL ... Man that was one Fine lookin Truck Too !!! Great Video Brother !!!
@fritzhvac Hey Fritz!! Oh yeah, The trains are always going by at just the right time!! Yeah Buddy, I finally caught her in the act!! I have been trying for two heating seasons now!! Thank you Fritz, it just all fell into place for me today. It was worth waiting until today, it was just right! You will get that American Standard one of these days, don't give up Brother! Thank you so much for the kind words my friend!!
How old is that Coleman anyway? It looked to be in pretty good shape. The tan finish on the coil guard and the cabinet were in decent shape. Also, I noticed it had an A.O. Smith fan motor. Is that original? How many nominal tons? Again, great video Ray!
@RestrictedAccessCIP I can answer all that just from watching Ray's videos. lol!
The Coleman heat pump is from 2006, matched to a 2002 Coleman/UPG air handler w/ 5kw heat strips. The cabinet is in such good shape because Ray takes care of it and washes it every Spring. It is a 2 ton unit, and I believe the fan motor is original.
@joeyf504327 I don't know why the hell I said May. It was JANUARY 2006 for the 13 SEER minimum mandate and August or September 2009 for the beginning of the R-22 phaseout mandate. Since my house was built in 2007 it has 13 SEER R-22 units. All homes in my neighborhood built before 2006 have 10 SEER units.
@RestrictedAccessCIP Hey Charlie!! The Heat Pump was installed in April of 2006. It does still look pretty good for it's age. I try to keep it cleaned up. I think the defrost cycles help keep the coil clean too. The AO Smith fan motor is original. The only thing that is not original is the Run Capacitor and the wiring to the reversing valve coil. It is a 2 ton Heat pump.
@AVTreasures So was there a 2002 Coleman heat pump matched to the 2002 air handler and that died and had to be replaced under warranty? OR did you have an even older heat pump and the air handler malfunctioned and you just replaced the air handler 10 years ago?
@RestrictedAccessCIP The original outdoor unit was a Comfortmaker 1.5 ton. I don't know why the installer put that in with the UPG 2 ton air handler. It never did work right. I took it upon myself to pick the next unit. I learned that the Air Handler was a heat pump model and I located the very last matching 2 ton heat pump they had left. It was probably a couple of years old when it was installed. The air handler is still the original 2002 install.
@AVTreasures I thought it was okay to have a half-ton outdoor condenser matched up with a slightly larger indoor unit (for example, my neighbor has a 2.5-ton Carrier straight-cool unit matched up with a 3-ton gas furnace and indoor coil).
@RestrictedAccessCIP I think it would have been OK if they had been the same brand of equipment and had been designed to work together. The piston sizes for Comfortmaker (ICP) and UPG are not the same, I think that may have had something to do with it. Even changing the piston to what UPG said to use with a 1.5 ton outdoor unit did not fix it. It has worked great since the matching 2 ton heat pump was installed. Plus I got a heat pump too!!
Seriously, why can't I get heat pumps belonging to my friends and relatives to do this? I loved the way you got the closeup of the ice/frost melting! With the Trane XL1800 I filmed the coils were hidden behind the cabinet and with the Carrier it was too dark. Great video! Also, I saw a little red extended cab "5-cylinder horror" parked on your property. Was that one in for engine repair too?
@RestrictedAccessCIP Was that red Colorado a 5-cylinder horror or a 4-cylinder? The gray Silverado was really nice, but I really thing the Colorado would be netter if they'd just continued with the 4.3L Vortec V6.
@RestrictedAccessCIP Oh man ,it has been a long wait to catch this one! It does most of it's running (in heat mode) during the night when I'm not here. I had to wait for just the right conditions to catch it, and today was my lucky day finally! Thanks Charlie! You have lots of great defrost videos of heat pumps, keep on trying and you will catch them all eventually!! The "5 cylinder Horror" (LOL) belongs to a guy that is observing here for his auto mechanics class.
@AVTreasures Your Coleman looks a similar to the Coleman Evcon units I filmed at the church in Key West. Of course those straight-cool units because it rarely gets cold and never gets below freezing in Key West. Who owns the Silverado?
@AVTreasures GM has a deal with Allison transmissions which is one of the top transmission companies out there, and dodge has the Cummins diesel, each has a very good part to it as the transmission and engine are very important and have to be right, so a GM or Dodge are your two best picks for a pick up
@joeyf504327 I agree with you. The GM trucks with Allison Transmissions are great trucks. Dodge Trucks are the only thing Chrysler makes that I would consider purchasing.
@AVTreasures AMEN TO THAT!! I don't think anyone could GIVE me a Crapler I mena Chrysler product. I wouldn't even consider a Dodge unless it has the Cummins diesel, but I'd still rather have a Ford Power Stroke or a GM Duramax. :-)
@joeyf504327 You can't spell "stroke" (i know it's sarcasm but seriously)
Ford F-series pick up trucks have been rated number ONE for 34 YEARS IN A ROW, son. In a Dodge, the Diesel engine is good, but the rest of the truck is garbage. Crapler I mean Chrysler is junk in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with a V8 diesel engine.
ESPECIALLY the legendary Ford/International Power Stroke 7.3 diesel V8, which was a rock solid engine.
@84randomdude ok the 7.3l v8 was only around for 16 years, then the 6.0 for four years, next the 6.4 for yet again four years and now ford made their OWN engine, what were they thinking! they designed and international built but now they do both, that = bad, Cummins has been making diesels since before WWII and they even made a commercial to show it and i love that one, the ford backs away, my uncle is a huge ford fan but he says "go to dodge for a diesel truck, ford diesels SUCK"
@84randomdude well sorry thats what a ford expert says and i will never buy one so, unless they go through with the deal to use Cummins engine in their future trucks i will never use a ford diesel, in fact one our friends in Texas has 8 diesels trucks all 3500 of course, Dodge, Chevy, Gmc, Ford and he says he has had the 7.3, the 6.0 and the 6.4 and says they've all been disappointing, he had hopes for them but he quit on ford as they couldn't deliver like a Dodge or Chevy
Uhh, if it is not too much trouble, and if it's OK with your brother, would you mind doing a start up/walk around video of it? I've always liked the Duramax diesels, and the way they sound starting and idling. Just sort of the same type of video that you did with your '97 GMC
@84randomdude I will see what I can do Matt, that would make a good video!! I'm sure my brother wouldn't mind. If he does, I will just do it when he is not looking..LOL!!
Awesome video Ray!! Glad ya finally caught 'er defrosting!!
Well, I guess we've seen it all, we've seen this unit running in 100+ degree summer heat, and now we've seen it defrost it's coils in the winter! lol!
Thank You!! I have been running it for about two weeks now. The weather has been mild enough that I could leave it on at night. After trying all week, I had a feeling today was the day. I carried my camera when I went to check on it this morning, and sure enough it was frosted up good. It went into defrost just 6 minutes after I started filming it. I knew if I was patient, I would catch a defrost eventually.
Reversing valve sounds good.

Well, I guess we've seen it all, we've seen this unit running in 100+ degree summer heat, and now we've seen it defrost it's coils in the winter! lol!

@84randomdude Hey Matt!!
Thank you Matt, I appreciate that my friend!!
