I'll forever defend Cruise as an actor. The man is phenomenal when given the right script and director. He was incredible in this role. He goes from being a pretentious, misogynist jerk to being brought to the lowest of lows, and he handles it so well. It's really terrible that his personal life has tainted his reputation so deeply. People need to separate Cruise the actor from Cruise the man; his personal life is no one's business. The man is a great actor, plain and simple.
i know he's trying really hard, but when tom cries, i can't help but laugh. the faces, he convulsing he does, the clap, and his "sobs" sound more like laughs to me. anyone else agree?
@jvoltios Toms not in the in crowd, and doesn't play the political game in hollywood anymore, thats why he doesn't get the best scripts like Clooney,Damon, and Pitt. Its no accident that after Brad Pitts best friend and former business partner took over Paramount in 2005 the very next year they fired Cruise and blamed it on scientology, oprah and mi3 not making a billion dollars worldwide. Guess which company produced Babel and Benjamin Button, which both got oscar noms and flopped domesticaly.
@arasace Cruise still gets good scripts man. I'd say he fucked his own reputation with his whole Scientology rant and his Oprah melt down. He's a good actor though.
@scorzi against Haley and Michael Caine, it was a tough one... Tommy Lee Jones winning over Ralph Fiennes, Di Caprio and Pete Postlethwaite... THAT WAS OUTRAGEOUS!!!
Could someone confirm the following to me? By saying don't leave, is he reliving his abandonment at 14, is expressing how he feels now, with Earl dying, or both? I think it's both but I'm not sure.
@mizkex It's both. He is finally dealing with and coming to terms with the father who left him, and just as he does this, and is ready to have him reenter his life, his father is dying. Also, he is having to deal with his mothers death again in a way as well since it is the same sort of situation for him. It's a very multi-layered scene. Truth be told, if it weren't for the fact that Tom Cruise doesn't play politic in Hollywood he would have gotten a nomination for this one.
frank tj mackey (tom cruise) in magnolia is ISTJ(myers briggs). ISTJ=Basic Fear: Of being without support and guidance

My mother is dying of cancer and nearly at her end and I can tell you that watching this It feels very fake and over the top. It's not a Good performance at all.
@davidmiska with all due respect for your mother´s situation, I don´t think that has anything to do with Cruise´s performance or the way you judge or evaluate his performance, does it?
Sure it does. Theres an emotional disposition that cruise isn't producing here. It's over the top and forced. Doesn't matter if you loved or hated your parent. Cruise is a average actor anyways.
Just because you have been in the same situation as Cruise character doesn´t mean he must act the same way you do. And I suppose you don´t have the same story of his, so you don´t know how you would react.
it´s all your opinion. You think Cruise is an average actor? it´s your loss. But you could watch his good performances because I don´t think you have. recommend you Rain man, Collateral, Jerry Maguire, Eyes wide shut, Born the fourth of july, A few good men...
ok do some research find out which take that was. if it took no more then 5 you win. for examples for russel crow it took one take in the gladiator scene when he arrives home to witness the murder of his wife and child.
@davidmiska yeah i think your missing the point. im very sorry for what your going through but his father in this scene abandoned his mother when she was ill and left him to struggle on his own. the crying isn't about him just dying. theres a lot more to it than that
I am reading a biography on Tom Cruise. This scene seem familiar with his own experience with his dying father. He only saw his father three times after he, his sisters and his mother fled from his abusive father. The third time was when his father was dying from cancer. He asked Tom to come to see him, but Tom was not allowed to express any recriminations or talk about the past. This scene may just be real. ;)
Tom cruise, Leo dicaprio, Will smith, Edward Norton, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr, gary oldman... Actors that should have an oscar(s) but dont... Fuck the academy!
@DonRMB everybody you said there deserved an oscar or more...except Will Smith, what movie do you think he deserved an oscar for? his best performance was Seven Pounds, but noway in hell he wins over Daniel Day Lewis for that, didnt even deserve a nomination to be honest. He is a good actor though
Will smith? are you serious? for what? playing the monkey in planet of the apes 2010? (it really was him but went uncredited).
Agree with the others though. The only reasonable black actor is morgan freeman. The others are all misguided minority complex ridden would be gangsta rappers become politically correct capitalist actors.
The people who dismiss Tom Cruise as an actor because of his belief in a retarded pseudo-religion are probably the same people who think Adam Sandler and Dane Cook are funny. Watch this movie and tell me he can't act.
Tom Cruise film choices have really gone down in the last ten years. The whole mission impossible debacle, Knight & Day and even some of the more serious stuff like Lions for Lambs and Valkyrie have been disappointing. He should go back to basics and stop producing and making billion dollar blockbuster films.
Leonardo DiCaprio (Aviator, Shutter Island, Catch Me if you can), Tom Cruise (rain man, born on the Fouth of july, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia), Brad Pitt (Babel, Fight Club), John Cazale (Deer Hunter), Johnny Depp (Public Enemies), Will Smith (Ali) = All victims of Oscar committee stupidity.
I think in this movie Tom got great inspiration by Marlon Brando in his " Last tango in Paris " in scene when Brando sit down beside of his dead wife and does on of the gratis scene in a movie ever !! Tom did a very great scene here also !!
@aria198504 That's so funny you say that. The coffin scene in Last Tango is one of my top 3 favorite scenes in film history. I started creating a list of my favorite scenes and I have yet to find that one to add it. But yes, I completely agree that this scene is very reminiscent of that one. I thought that the very first time I saw it 10 years ago.
Tom Cruise is one of the greatest actors in the history of film, hands down. This is one of the greatest films of all time directed by one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Paul Thomas Anderson brings out the best in his actors....Flawless cast.
Yeah, Tom Cruise definitely should have taken home the Oscar that year. I love Michael Caine, but Tom Cruise was just flawless, raw, and honest in this film. This scene definitely shows another side of Tom Cruise that we have never seen before. I was thinking about using this monologue for my audition for my college play next year.
Incredible, incredible scene. Blows me away. On a side note, I love how Philip Seymour Hoffman is in the background the whole time, like, "Oh God, what have I done?!"
Tom is the HELL of an Actor...a genius at the art of acting. It doesn't fucking matter if he jumps on couches. It doesnot change the fact that he's one of the greatest actors.
TOM The greatest Actor In the whole universe, How could those fuckers From the academy leave him without award and give it to Caine, Michael is god and all that, but i mean look at Tom, just indescribable, absolutely unique. Why academy ignores his talent, Born On 4 of July, Rain Man, Jerry, this, list goes endless. Probably Only Pacino can get emotions out like this, Tom is perfect and screw the academy. TC Rules!!!
WTF...it's like the scene skipped at 2:27. Am I the only one who noticed this? the only reason it annoys me is because I find the background music to be very powerful in the scene...it adds to Cruise's already magnetic performance.
If this had been Johnny Depp acting to this standard, he'd have had an Oscar and much c**k sucking, but alas, it was Tom Cruise, so he was shafted. The hypocrites who deny Tom and to this day berate the guy, cannot hide the quality of his work, of which this role is just one example.
I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but in this movie he was perfectly cast. P.t. anderson seems to understand how to play to his strengths and utilize them to their highest level, and Tom doesn't disappoint. The first time I saw this scene I was in awe, and recall saying to myself: "Holy shit! Tom Cruise can act! Who knew?" I've yet to see him top himself after this film, but at least I was finally convinced that he could do great things if he wanted to. Bravo Tom, and Paul: keep doin' ur thing man.
@MGReilly86 Tom can definitely act. Watch "Born on the 4th of July", which came much earlier than Magnolia for probably his best performance and one that's up there with the best of any actor in Hollywood. He's also very good in "Vanilla Sky".
@slevisman Yeah I've seen Born on the Fourth of July. Good flick, but his performance didn't match this one in my opinion. I didn't really notice if he was good in Vanilla Sky or not cause I was too busy noticing that the movie sucked ass. But I suppose he was good, thought he was pretty funny in Tropic Thunder too.
First of all, I'm no Tom Cruise fan. Uh-uh. With that out of the way... People tend to regard Mr Cruise as just a pretty boy and a Scientologist weirdo. I, myself, am guilty of that same oversight occasionally. But then then I watch Born on the Fourth of July, Interview With the Vampire, and this movie again. And then I remember, once again, that he's capable of extraordinary feats as an actor when given the chance.
"You Prick! Cocksucker..." "I am not going to cry for you"
All while trying so desperately to hold back the tears. Many people may count a few times on their hands when their anger and sadness fought in a battle like this one. That is so damn difficult...
The scene that convinced me that Tom Cruise can act. I'd love to see him in more indie stuff, but I doubt that's happening anytime soon (then again, he's had some bombs recently, so...)
One of THE most raw, touching scenes by an actor in cinema HISTORY! STILL stunning after all these years...Cruise, NO ONE can say SHIT about you if they watch this movie!!
@baldymort1 I thank you for your condolence to unknown guys' father...I really appreciate it. I still remember My & my father went to see The movie Top =*=Gun.... I do remember the scene of the His co- pilot's passing scene...His acting was remarkable that one too...but This "Magnolia" scene became most personal to me....well, let's change the subject...the life shouldn't be this low...His new movie comming out this comming 23 June 2010 .it's soppose to be a comedy so enjoy the laughter
It's either this role or Born on the 4th of July that is his best performance. It's hard for some people to look past Tom's good looks but behind his face he is a outstanding actor.
I went to see Born on 4th July on release & I fully expected Cruise to suck.
How WRONG! I had to re-evaluate and admit that he can really mix it with the best.
On its own this scene is heartwrenching...in the context of the film and what we know about Mackey & his past, its many times more so. Magnolia is a brilliant piece of sublime cinema and this is easily one of the best scenes from it.
Oscar or not (who cares?) no one can take this scene away from Cruise and that is what counts.
@erererer5 watch the "Goddamn Regret" monologue and you'll learn that Earl (the old man) regrets leaving his wife Lilly and his son Frank (Cruise) because his wife had cancer. and now Earl has cancer and is dying and wants to talk to his son...and that's what this scene is, after Phil (Philip Seymour Hoffman) gets in touch with Tom's character...
one of the best scenes of all time. Say what you will bout' Tom crusie but this is very moving and something a lot of people can relate to, ...conflicting emotions.
best fuckin scene sorry for cusing but im so tired of these great actors not getting recognized for there fine work tom cruise, johny depp come on whats going on its not fair at all
Watch The Last Samurai. There is some more GREAT acting by Tom, mostly very subtle, but great. And what a beautiful and deep-hitting film as a whole it is.
he's got robbed of a couple of oscars. this, jerry maguire, DEFINITELY born on the 4th of july, rain man, shit he could have like 4 or 5. now everyone thinks hes a freak cuz he jumps on couches.
@nateman79 Imagine how you'd think of a friend who acted the same way and apply it to him. He's a great actor and all but a little strange. But then again, so was Brando
@nateman79 that and he believes that we're all aliens from a far planet from a distant planet and that we should monitor how much aliens we have in our body regularly. scientology is a bitch.
@nateman79 I totally agree. His personal life, or his life-style, or everything in between should not affect the Academy's decisions. He deserves at least one Oscar.
@thecataclysman dont get me wrong, i think he's a twisted as hell weirdo nowadays, but the oscars have just screwed him big time. i wont deny his talent regardless of his twisted ass belief system
Any actor would be nervous as hell before doing this scene. It's probably the hardest kind of scene an actor can do and Cruise was flawless. I hope he can start to do character roles like this again and at least get back his respect for being a fine actor, even if he'll never get a whole lot of respect as a person.
No matter how good he had ever been before or since, this is the BEST acting of Tom Cruise's career, easily. He deserved the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year and nothing will convince me otherwise.
damn i cant believe i actualy had tears, how fucked up. love this movie, by the way i read that phillip seymour hoffman wasnt scripted to cry in this scene, he got emotional and just did. watch him in the background
To be honest i find it hard to keep a straight face when watching tom cruise during this scene, looks like he's jerking off at one point! for me the real acting is all being done in the background by Hoffman, it's his character's inclusion that drives the whole thing, a very good decision by the director!
what the hell??? all the acting is done by some overrated nurse just standing there in the background. Arguments like yours are why Hoffman is so overrated. Cruise is working his ass off and he's pulling it off.
2: 39---> Es sublime esta parte en donde no puede contenerse más y eso se ve reflejado hasta en su cuerpo...Lo mejor de TOm Cruise.// He can´t resist more and you can see that in the way he shivers.
I wouldn't say this is lazy writing, it's a actually a pretty good scene because it lets the viewer decide whether they should feel sympathy towards these 2 very flawed and unlikable characters.
WOAH. Red light, stop! First of all, it takes time and energy to choke a kitten, and commitment because PETA is fucking crazy these days. Second, which I guess is more of a question, is whether or not this scene made YOU sad. If it did, I think the writing was effective, because for the whole movie TJ Mackey is a disgusting piglike hatable character, and suddenly he's not only human but evoking sympathy.
The fact that Cruise didn't get an oscar for this scene alone is a travesty. If he never gets one, he should have for this one. If you watch this scene and do not feel anything, then you have no heart, period
I didn't really notice if he was good in Vanilla Sky or not cause I was too busy noticing that the movie sucked ass. But I suppose he was good, thought he was pretty funny in Tropic Thunder too.
MGReilly86 1 year ago
First of all, I'm no Tom Cruise fan. Uh-uh. With that out of the way... People tend to regard Mr Cruise as just a pretty boy and a Scientologist weirdo. I, myself, am guilty of that same oversight occasionally. But then then I watch Born on the Fourth of July, Interview With the Vampire, and this movie again. And then I remember, once again, that he's capable of extraordinary feats as an actor when given the chance.
darkmage7280 1 year ago
Amazing scene...probably Tom Cruises best performance and even the acting of Phillip Seymore Hoffman in the background is awesome.

All while trying so desperately to hold back the tears. Many people may count a few times on their hands when their anger and sadness fought in a battle like this one. That is so damn difficult...

The scene that convinced me that Tom Cruise can act. I'd love to see him in more indie stuff, but I doubt that's happening anytime soon (then again, he's had some bombs recently, so...)
malathis0 1 year ago
Fantastic movie and easily Cruise's best performance. EASILY.

One of THE most raw, touching scenes by an actor in cinema HISTORY! STILL stunning after all these years...Cruise, NO ONE can say SHIT about you if they watch this movie!!

@baldymort1 that's because He is Tom Cruise... man.. man...This is tight...
It reminds me when my dear father's passing... His acting is amazing. truly remarkable.

@maxinpains hey man. im sorry to hear about your loss. yeah he is flawless in this film.
baldymort1 1 year ago
@baldymort1 I thank you for your condolence to unknown guys' father...I really appreciate it. I still remember My & my father went to see The movie Top =*=Gun.... I do remember the scene of the His co- pilot's passing scene...His acting was remarkable that one too...but This "Magnolia" scene became most personal to me....well, let's change the subject...the life shouldn't be this low...His new movie comming out this comming 23 June 2010 .it's soppose to be a comedy so enjoy the laughter
maxinpains 1 year ago
It's either this role or Born on the 4th of July that is his best performance. It's hard for some people to look past Tom's good looks but behind his face he is a outstanding actor.

Tom Cruise- heart wrenching. The man just fell apart right in front of us, all his emotion irrupted in to that one moment.

Oscar or not (who cares?) no one can take this scene away from Cruise and that is what counts.
roachy333 2 years ago 2
this movie is phenomonal. one of Tom Cruise's best performances on film.

what is happening in this scene exactly ?
erererer5 2 years ago
@erererer5 watch the "Goddamn Regret" monologue and you'll learn that Earl (the old man) regrets leaving his wife Lilly and his son Frank (Cruise) because his wife had cancer. and now Earl has cancer and is dying and wants to talk to his son...and that's what this scene is, after Phil (Philip Seymour Hoffman) gets in touch with Tom's character...

great acting period.

@nateman79 I think that hes even more awesome just for that same reason.
jakespick 1 year ago
@nateman79 Right?
TheGodlyPatron 1 year ago
@nateman79 Imagine how you'd think of a friend who acted the same way and apply it to him. He's a great actor and all but a little strange. But then again, so was Brando
TheDJMeyer85 1 year ago
@nateman79 that and he believes that we're all aliens from a far planet from a distant planet and that we should monitor how much aliens we have in our body regularly. scientology is a bitch.
Nobodie92 10 months ago
@nateman79 I totally agree. His personal life, or his life-style, or everything in between should not affect the Academy's decisions. He deserves at least one Oscar.
thecataclysman 8 months ago
@thecataclysman dont get me wrong, i think he's a twisted as hell weirdo nowadays, but the oscars have just screwed him big time. i wont deny his talent regardless of his twisted ass belief system
nateman79 8 months ago
@nateman79 I know, right. I can't believe he didn't win an Oscar for this... One of the best acting performances I've ever seen.
HonorGuard117 8 months ago 2
Cruise should have bagged an oscar for this role. Even if he is a scintology nut.

Victory6385 2 years ago
Any actor would be nervous as hell before doing this scene. It's probably the hardest kind of scene an actor can do and Cruise was flawless. I hope he can start to do character roles like this again and at least get back his respect for being a fine actor, even if he'll never get a whole lot of respect as a person.
superman11978 2 years ago 7
I'm very Surprised he didn't get the academy award for this part. One of his best performances here!
Noslen1f 2 years ago 5
best scene in this movie..!
ronnysixx 2 years ago 5
No matter how good he had ever been before or since, this is the BEST acting of Tom Cruise's career, easily. He deserved the Best Supporting Actor Oscar that year and nothing will convince me otherwise.

To be honest i find it hard to keep a straight face when watching tom cruise during this scene, looks like he's jerking off at one point! for me the real acting is all being done in the background by Hoffman, it's his character's inclusion that drives the whole thing, a very good decision by the director!
mickfriday 2 years ago
Yes well laugh all you want, Tom Cruise did win a Golden Globe for his acting in this film. I wish to see more him in these kind of films.
jindiezel 2 years ago 9
what the hell??? all the acting is done by some overrated nurse just standing there in the background. Arguments like yours are why Hoffman is so overrated. Cruise is working his ass off and he's pulling it off.

This is lazy writing. It's like choking a kitten on screen. Of course that will make people sad.
blackhole4140 2 years ago
I wouldn't say this is lazy writing, it's a actually a pretty good scene because it lets the viewer decide whether they should feel sympathy towards these 2 very flawed and unlikable characters.
Tendoza 2 years ago 3
SodyPopInSpace 2 years ago 4
I do agreed this is the best tom cruise
porkisgood4u 3 years ago 3
The fact that Cruise didn't get an oscar for this scene alone is a travesty. If he never gets one, he should have for this one. If you watch this scene and do not feel anything, then you have no heart, period
