I've used Limewire (actually, FrostWire, now) for years, and never had a virus from it. To help prevent viruses, have Limewire automatically scan completed files with a virus scanner (like AVG).

As for getting caught by the MPAA or RIAA, for the most part if you move the files to an unshared folder after downloading, they'll ignore you because you're not sharing many files. You can also download PeerGuardian, and disable uploads.
