Finally a good video with great information about an art app that is more like I am used to for my tablet. I can't wait to get started and now trying to find it is going to be my next project. Thanks Angie!
Hi Angie, fantastic video, I've been refusing to use digital media for a while now, but after getting an iPhone and watching your videos I can see that it's fun to try, so why not. I just installed Artstudio to try it out later at coffee time :)
I started off with artstudio on the iPod touch, but have since got an ipad2 & have bought sketchbook pro & doink since & all are very good. I just feel when I'm using one, I could use a certain feature the other app allows you to use. I suppose you can transfer between the apps, but obviously if one could incorporate all these into one it'd be the best drawing app on the app store
I havent tried out Art Studio, but i have Sketchbook pro and so far i'm loving it, i also have a wacom intuos 3 and a touch screen monitor, and let me tell you the productivity using these together is through the roof.
Would you recommend an iPad for drawing? Or is it just OKAY and you wouldn't recommend drawing on it. I REALLY want it and I have been saving since we first knew about it. I also wanted it for the internet reasons with the WiFi, but I also want it to draw for me. If you would please respond I would greatly appreciate it! This video really helped me to get to know it!
Thanks everyone! The brush settings are very "tweakable" too. And just think, this is still a first generation device! Can't wait to see what comes out in the spring!
Wow, I really like the chisel brush tip edge. It doesn't round out like I assumed it would. It actually gives you quite a nice stroke. Now the iPad looks like it's worth purchasing. Thanks 4 sharing!
@DeathlyGust Thanks! I'lll check out Brushes. ArtStudio for iPad also has this functionality that can be adjusted on a per-brush basis. At times it is a great feature and feels like using a real brush or marker.
@elDreDas Paper kills rock. Rock kills scissors. *grin* They are different things for different occasions. That's like saying Laptops are better than the iPad. Different tools for different things. That's all.
@digitalblacksmiths You can see the context, we are talking about DRAWING, ipad is over sized ipod touch and it is awsome ( i realy love it) but if you are want to draw then buy a wacom tablet because ipad is not for good works, it let you make interesting sketching but thats all. I you want to draw buy a wacom, if you want fun and draw IDEAS not the complete work* then buy and ipad, i you enough money then buy both cause they are great together
@elDreDas Oh, sure. Wacoms are great and we posted several videos already drawing on a Cintiq 21-inch. But the iPad is a different tool altogether. If you want to believe you can't draw on the ipad, go right ahead. But many artists are going ahead and creating wonderful pieces of art (even featured on the cover of national magazines, like the New Yorker). It's just another tool in the artists' box of techniques.
@TheSubwaysurfer AWESOME!!! Can't wait to see your work with it. You're going to have so much fun with your new iPad. Too awesome how you got it, too!
@digitalblacksmiths Progress is coming SLOWLY but its coming! LOL the Pogo seems a bit clumsu top me after all those years of using a pen on paper. Maybe the program itself lends itself to a better time drawing.
Really like your artwork, and its nice to see the vision from fellow visual digital artist, am working on a bunch of robo digi art, would like your comments too, just click on my name on the left hand side to view the video, hope to see more artwork of yours soon :). Digi Artman
You should also try other drawing applications like Brushes or Sketchbook Pro. They are much more advanced than Art Studio and include many more brushes/options. I would love it if you did overview/demonstration! Thanks Angie!
@GuitarGal98 Do a search under other videos we did (click on the "digitalblacksmiths" next to 'From' and you'll see the first review we did was for Sketchbook Pro. What we like about Sketchbook Pro and ArtStudio is that they both have video out capability plus several other really nice features. Thanks for watching!
@fvig2001 Thanks for the question. No, there is no screen protector. The tip of the pogo is soft, and the bottom edge of the pogo "tube" is a rounded plastic, so it would be difficult to scratch the screen even if the edge of the tube pushed down past the soft ball on the pogo tip. I don't even know what protectors are out there. Sorry.
@Espada6666 Some developers are starting to add "hand detection" believe it or not. It can tell if it's a large oval shape near the bottom of the screen (your palm) then ignore it, but if it's a finger impression or pen, then use that instead.
@kuru2k9 The Cintiq screen is not pressure sensitive. It is actually the stylus and it sends the signal to the Cintiq. For example, you can hold a glass plate above the Cintiq and draw on that with the stylus and still get pressure sensitivity. The actual pressure sensor is in the pen, which is why I feel it's just a matter of time before someone introduces a pressure pen for the iPad.
@digitalblacksmiths Actualy, there is a taiwan company that procudes a tablet which is identical TO the cintiq. I think its called Usynch PenTablet, I believe it is 19 inches, but it costs $500. Apperently this tablet has a pressure sensetivity of 1024, where as I know the cintiq as 2048 right?
I also think that logitech tried making a pen as well a few years ago, but it turned out to be a mouse pen.
Like you said, everyone (companies that is) is really close to achieving this.
@wasisnoida While it is possible, I'm not sure why you would. Basically, Sketchbook Pro and ArtStudio both save out to your gallery. This means any other program that access your gallery can access the drawings. Pages imports from the gallery, so you can bring it in as a picture.
Apple, Someone, Please give us a pressure sensitive stylus!!! I would buy one in a heart beat! I think a lot of artist would as well! Thanks for making the video! :)
@ScrewAttackEurope Yes. I was never a fan of the 12 inch Cintiq. It works, but it's too 'jumpy' around the edges. And it's 'portability' of being smaller is nullified by the giant power brick, extra cables (USB, power, video).
So when I need extra precision/power, I use the 21-inch. When I need portability, I use the iPad. My 12-inch Cintiq is now just a backup for my 21 inch Cintiq.
@digitalblacksmiths Ah thanks, I've for a 21" Cintiq and was pondering on getting a 12" when on the go, But the iPad is highly tempting now (just got to wait for them to come out here :D)
Is the lack of pressure sensitivity really an issue though?
@ScrewAttackEurope We are living with it. It's nice to have pressure sensitivity, but it's by no means a deal breaker, especially when considering the added benefits of the iPad. See if you can find someone with a 12-inch Cintiq near you and try it out if possible. You'll see what I mean about the edges being jittery. Good luck, though!
Would be great pressure sensitive pen, just perfect for artists. No wires just single peace of glass. I actually don't know how my bamboo one is working, I guess its pressure sensitive tip. Cintiq screen is capacitive as I know, so pressure sensitivity on the iPad is possible as well i thing.. same type of screen, just need special pen I guess.
@tauttvisz You nailed it exactyl: a single piece of glass. Everything else just disappears and you can focus on the task, not the tool. We really think the pen can be made, but it would have to be done in effort with the software so they talk to each other via bluetooth.
i actually reall like the lack of weight sensitivity.. gives you more control menu wise... obviously not as natural, but that's what pen and paper is for :) thanks for posting video!
@digitalblacksmiths You said that it is possible to make a pressure sensitive pen for ipad. Care to give any source on this info? BTW nice review/demo. I seriously believe that ipad can be used as productivity tool.
@yasir25119918 Thank you about the video. As for productivity tool, I agree. We are using it as a content creation tool every day!
As for the pressure sensitive pen, too much detail to go into here, but it would basically be a pen with a pressure sensitive tip. The further in the tip goes, the more the signal would change. Very similar to the Wacom stylus pens.
Instead of using an inductive transmission, it would use bluetooth to send that data directly to the program.
@Loveless4518 I do. We only did the quick sketches since we mostly use this for live events. But if you spend more than 5 minutes on a drawing, it can make some great artwork.
@MegaWaxz Thanks for the kind words. Not sure what you mean about the 80's look. Should we have rock music on the next one? This isn't a promo video like the other ones I've posted, but rather a straight informative, content-heavy demonstration of the program. Thanks again for the kind words about the content!
@williamalvarez Thanks for the question. We actually covered this in the other video (Part 1) towards the end. There are several ways to print. But you can also email the files and save paper and the environment.
Thanks for the comments. Thanks for the reminder about the hovering. That's a great point and I forgot to mention that.
I think I mentioned this in the last video, but I don't think it's fair to compare to a Cintiq. They are so different and the Cintiq wins hands down for what it does.
What the iPad does is introduce a new, more mobile, slimmed down version for artists to draw in a more informal setting. And the tradeoff is loss of the pro features in a Cintiq.
@digitalblacksmiths That makes sense. With the prices and the work that went into Cintiq, I believe Cintiq will do it the best.
I was surprise to hear from a friend of my that 8 artist in the street is now iPads instead of using a regular easel board and art pens... They are on the street with their IPADS and a printer! LOL! This is insane! Great concept great idea!
This is a very nice video! However, what I feel some people forget is, the cintiq may have all the top of the line stuff, but for you it is perfect because you don't need all those extra wires, the laptop and all that extra stuff, where as the ipad all you need is: the ipad+printer. Very good video, it was great to see you drawing in action!
Nice video, however I feel that I should point out something. Aside from Pressure sensitivity, you forgot to mention another difference between the Ipad and Cintiq. Because of the active digitizer on the Cintiq you can hover with the pen, which is very crucial to art. It makes the pen strokes far more accurate and eliminates quite a bit of trial and error.
Thanks for the good review Angie :) I'm anxiously awaiting my iPad 3G. As a Cintiq user as well, I'm curious to see how these apps compare. Not expecting it to even be close, but I am looking forward to super portable digital art on the go!
Finally a good video with great information about an art app that is more like I am used to for my tablet. I can't wait to get started and now trying to find it is going to be my next project. Thanks Angie!

I always wondered: For pressure sensevity, is it a matter of literally pressing on the brush ittself for the cnique.
Or, is it matter of how hard you press on the screen for either the cintiq/ipad?
kuru2k9 1 year ago
