I would very much like to make over to Japan one these days and visit this museum. I have always had an interest in the Yamato since I was a kid. I had an old Lindberg kit of the battleship and was always admiring the box art of the ship. My interest would grow even more in the ship when I first saw Space Battleship Yamato back in the late 1970's. She was truly an awesome and impressive battleship.
The barrel, prop, and rudder mounted outside the museum belongs to the Battleship Mutsu....Sistership to the former flagship of the Imperial fleet the IJN Nagato....she blew up in Tokyo bay while loading experiment hot loads of Topex instead of normal Cordite loads.....another barrel and one of its turrets were salvaged and mounted at the Japanese Naval Academy at Eta Jima... I think
large part of the ship still remains in the bay....
@crpdst2003 Was it topex that was used in the 18in anti-aircraft shells? I read once that this was a possible cause of the explosion. The shells were supposed to generate a great deal of heat, hurling thousands of white-hot fragments through the air. I would think that this type of shell would have been better for the 6in guns as they had a 55 degree elevation. I suppose the idea of shooting the huge 18in shells in front of approaching torpedo planes would have made some sense.
@Bullettube AA shells its all tracking speed....Japanese 5 inch secondard was big enough but too slow to be really effective and a gigantic 18.1 inch turret lacks speed and large naval guns certainly to not have the elevation especially inside 5 mile range.... Yamato class too important to Japanese Navy to risk such a hot charge....even inside AA Shell it still have to be stored inside Magazines and one little boom and good bye...especially after Mutsu afair I doubt they would allow it..
ssmusic214: Ever watch, THE WORLD AT WAR? Well, I am not an opera fan, but in one of the episodes ALBERT SPEER states that the Berlin Philhamonic played twilight of the Gods as the Russian Army entered Berlin. The accompaning video showed him sitting in the audience listening to the piece on your video! either SPEER didn't know Wagner or the Producers got the audio wrong!!
GREAT AND APPROPRIATE MUSIC!: From the last act of Wagner's "Die Gotterdammerung" (Twilight of the Gods) being played by the Berlin Philharmonic at the very time the Yamato was being sunk off Japan. While the score may be a bit more appropriate touring the Bholm&Voss Museum with a model of the Bismarck(don't think there is one) it was truely twilight for the Axis Powers AND the battleship; representing the zenith of design The Yamato!!
Who gets offended by a visual interpretation of a person that nobody living has ever seen? The answer to that is a douchebag. According to the Bible's description of Jesus he looks more like this than any Anglo version that I have ever seen. My avatar is in fact a douchebag test and you sir have passed with flying colors.
I think the yamato had 18inch guns which are very big , us guns were kept smaller since us battleships had to have a smaller beam to fit through the panama canal. I believe the biggest us guns were 16 inch.
and heres the kicker, japan had plans to make a ship even bigger and more powerful then the yamato, its guns would have been 20 inches. but the hull was never laid, as midway happened and they stopped making battleships
If you look at the actual service records of Yamato and Musashi, they were total disasters. Flawed design concept from very beginning. Complete waste of money, metal, industrial capacity and human lives.
The Japanese can have time to create Yamato Museum because that was their Naval pride. American do not have to as they have too many. They even have problem getting rid of the obsolete one. Just their 10 Nimitz Class Carriers are un-match by any now.
The Japanese Navy has made a blunder of their own Empire. They do not have the resources like the Americans. Adm Yamamoto knew it was a mistake as he spend years in the US and studied in Harvard. As what Stucker868 have stated. Even their steel were brittle. The Shinano (yamato sister ship) proof that. However, if the battle between the Missouri and Yamato do take place. It will be fantastic. No offence but gut feeling make me take Yamato to win. I bet, Adm Nimitz did feel will likewise.
Actually, they US Naval forces were only to eager to fight a surface engagement, Battleship to Battleship with either the Musashi or the Yamato. Well, who would win would depend on the time of day of the battle, the range at which the Yamato discovers the enemy or vice verce. A night battle would give the US forces the edge, better radar. If the Yamato was over the horizon and firing shells, she would have the edge.
Yamato had heavier armor than the Iowa class, but the inner bulkheads were much thicker and entirely constructed of STS armor plate throughout on the Iowas. Once a shell penetrated the belt or deck, the damage was far better contained on the US ships.
STUCKER868 was right. The Japanese were stagnant. They just depend on their Zero's until the war end. While the American's develop the P-51 Mustang and others. I thinks Adm Yamamoto, knew it was a mistake. But he have to follow the Emperor wish.
When the Japanese lost the four carriers, they also lost hundreds of the finest pilots that took part in the attack on Pearl Harbour. Those plane that came back form the attack on Midway Island got no where to land the plane but the Pacific Ocean. Sad indeed. Even the new Yamato class carrier Shinano was sunk by topedo within days of it launch. So the subsequent naval battles whose fleet without plane cover is like WW1 (Japanese) vesus WW2 (American) who had air-cover.
In the battle of Midway its just that the Japanese did not know that the three American carriers in Hornet, Yorktown and Enterprise were around the vicinity, until IJN Kaga, Akagi, and Hiryu sunk. Whereas Adm Nimitz men has broken the code of the impending Japanese attack on Midway and has reinforce their forces there. As such American has larger number as compared to the Japanese in that Battle. So the last remaining carrier IJN Soryu with eighty planes in nowhere compare to American hundreds.
Ya. It is sad that the two Battleships USS Iowa or USS Missouri and IJN Yamato or Mussashi, did not have the opportunity to come face to face just like Bismark and Hood. It will be really a classic. But a matter of opinion if they did have that chance, I will agree with Cypiditas. Iowa or Missouri will go down under in three hours battle. However, Yamato will be very badly damage. I think Adm Nimitz knows that too. So, he let the two IJN's fight their life with the planes.
Most surface engagements were decided in minutes.. (Bismarck Vs. Hood) Yamato would be pulverized by the radar controlled gunnery of the Iowa. The Yamato has to be able to see it's target and at 25 miles away that is impossible. Plus Iowa will be moving very fast and aquire a target in moments. REMEMBER... you dont have to sink a ship to destroy it. A crushed superstructure with no command structure is a dead ship.
I did see a lot of salvo being fired from STUCKER868. I guess you're American? Ya, Japan attack on the America was a grave mistake. Even Adm Yamamoto who studied in Harvard had said that "they have awaken the sleeping Giant" when they attack Pearl Harbour. He also added that if Japan were to start the war with the American, they have to be prepared to march from LA all the way New York. But I guess the Japanese have no choice then. It's a matter of time they will be at war with the America.
"Even Adm Yamamoto who studied in Harvard had said that "they have awaken the sleeping Giant" " It's unlikely he ever said that, there's never been any proof but it did reflect his sentiments towards a war with the US.
Still waiting for your original source that claims Yamato was made of U.S. steel. In fact you reveal no sources to back up any of your claims Cypiditas. Everyone has an opinion but you have to back it up with documented fact to prove it. Looks like you are the one who is "shut up."
Such a magnificent ship and such a waste of resources. The era of big gun capital ships was over when Billy Mitchell sank a captured german battleship after WW1 with planes and aerial bombs.
They did buy alot of steel from the US. However to claim the Yamato was made from pure US made steel and this was hidden by the Japanese so they would not have to admit that is silly. Cypiditas has a bad way of spewing forth unfounded "facts" but cant back them up. His comments are sloppy (such as stating the Yamato was commissioned in 1940 rather then 41.) Take what he says carefully. He also claims it would be "impossible" for the USS Iowa to defeat IJN Yamato in battle." Hahahaha
No, the steel used to make the yamato was from ships bought from russia, and the russians bought those from the americans, then the japanese named it their own steel because it wouldnt look so great in the press if your battleship was made of old american ships
No, The steel used to make the Yamato was of Japanese design (a copy of British Vickers smelting processes) made mostly of BRITISH metals. Check the web, it's all over the place. You make it sound like they sailed old American ships into Kure harbor, dismantled them and then slapped the metal on the frame of Yamato. Show me your sources.
It was made from all kinds of scrap metals brought in from all over Japan The original source is still Iron Ore that had to be re-smelted in the Japanese process. It was somewhat brittle and similar to WW1 British VH steel. The Brits built the KONGO for Japan and Japan being the copy-cats they are made clones. Cypiditas, you make ignorant statements on this and other forums about YAMATO (such as she was commisioned in 1940 when in reality it was Dec of 1941.) Face it, you are WRONG.
Name your sources. The Japanese imported tons of old steel (alot from England) so the final smelted product was a mishmash of various steel. It was considered brittle. The Yamato was NOT made from steel purely from American ships. SHOW ME YOUR SOURCES to back up your claims.
Found an original source document that destroys your statement that Yamato was made of U.S. steel. The document: "Reports Of The U.S. Technical Mission To Japan." Study of it will reveal: "In their smelting processes for PL10-13 plates, for additives, the Japanese were known to use up to 65%-75% scrap steels, sources unknown. The raw stock iron base however is almost certainly Manchurian." You hear that Cypiditas? MANCHURIAN. The Yamatos armor plates came from ore from Manchuria.
Why don't we quit the bickering and see whats really in this vid...The regrownth of Niponese pride in militarizm and industry..this is not good remember most japonese were taught that WE started the war and that THEY only surendered to stop more bloodshed...NOT that there government was in the WRONG or that they were well and truly beat...how long do you think It will take until we are at war with them again???
Agreed! Not bickering here just educating an idiot who says we won the war on pure numbers. And that he says it would be "impossible" for the Iowa to defeat Yamato in an engagement. LOL
the iowa class of battle ship was the most powerful and advanced battleship of the U.S navy, designed as "fast" battleships they were capable of escorting a quick carrier force mounting nine 16"/50 main guns, improved radar, no ship could beat the iowa in long range combat the large number of 5" guns gave exelent prorection from air attack and allthough the yamamoto class armor was slightly better the iowas speed and manoverability could not be discounted.
Correct except I will debate with you that although Yamato had thicker armor in places, the armor was of inferior smelting processes and considered brittle by US standards. Ever see the pic of the front barbette plate (26" that was supposed to go on Shinano) pierced completely at 40,000 yards by an Iowa 16" round for testing purposes? The US armor was made of a special hardened steel and design to decap 18.5" rounds.
Yes, I have seen it. Its still at Dahlgren Naval Weapons center in Virginia (so are the 8" guns of Prinz Eugen fyi). It was shot at 30,000 yards by a 2,700lb AP shell from a Mark-6 gun (North Carolina, South Dakota class main guns) twice. Both shells went completely through it, the second shattering the armored turret faceplate and breaking it in half.
As far as the Prinz Eugen goes... I met a man who was in the USN during WW2 and he said he helped sail the Eugen to Bikini for the tests.... it has a skeleton German crew to help and he said it was the cleanest ship inside and out he ever saw! Spotless inside and out.... not a barnacle on her and the paint looked new.
Ya and the Yamato was sunk by US steel too... HAHAHA... In fact, the Amercian Navy did not lose another BB after Pearl Harbor, yet almost the entire Jap fleet sits on the bottom.
and by the way, just to make you feel better and have more pride about this subject, The yamato was made of US steel, theres your dose of pride and glory for the day. Make good use of it! -.-
BS. The steel used was Japanese. It was: Japanese Vickers Hardened (VH) face-hardened, non-cemented armor intended for Yamato class ships. The Japanese imported all kinds of scrap metal and forged their own steel from it... Japanese steel was considered brittle. You ever read history or just do drugs? You must be Greek!
My evidence = Put the yamato against the Iowa, 1vs1, Yamato would win because of its sheer Armour and weapon systems. face it, you cant run from nine 18.1 inch naval Guns that shoot 26.1 miles far. Plus, her second line of defense were twelve 6.1 inch naval guns, AND had twelve 5 inch naval guns. The yamato had the most advanced weapons of the day. A iwoa could not run from a ship firing 33 shells of varying size in one volley. Stop being proud and look at the truth -.-
WRONG again. The Iowa had a faster firing rate vs. Yamato and it has been proven the damage caused by the 18.1" shells of Yamato vs. the 16" of the Iowa are quite similar. The 16's on the Iowa fired round with a higher velocity also. The only armor advantage the Yamato's had was on the frontal turret armor, otherwise quite similar except the Iowas had a HIGHER QUALITY steel. Bottom line is you are an idiot. Stop being stooopid and look at the truth.
Not to mention the Iowa's advanced gunnery radar would cause very accurate long range salvos that would wreck the Yamato's before they could range in. Of course they could get lucky, but it has been proven in compute simulations almost 85% of the time the Iowa's win.
That's not evidence stoooopid, it's your lame opinion. I want sources of some type, names of books you read (if you can read) or even websites that SUPPORT what you say.
Wow, you really are a dipshit arnt you, rofl. Google Yamato. it will give you the weapons armour etc. And with the rador thing, all the yamato would have to do is do a well placed volley on the Rader array, and the iwoa would be blind. And, also on many websites, the iwoa's armour on the main deck guns were lacking, so well placed shots at the magazines would cause tonnes of amunition to explode, causing mass damage to the ship itself. The iwoa would be screwed if that happened to it.
. To bad us americans had to sink it, would have been great if they towed it back to japan after the war, refurbashed it and put it on display for the public. And for those who say that any of the US Battle ships could take out the yamato 1vs1 are just full of glory for their country. Understandable, but, dont go out saying the impossible, just understand that the Japanese were alot more technologicaly adept then us. My opinion, only reason we won the pacific war was because of our numbers.
The Japanese were "alot more technically adept then us? WRONG! The Iowa's were made with a special hardened steel. They also were designed later then the Yamatos. They could turn sharper and were faster. They had better gunnery control (radar) etc etc etc. The Japanese designed their ships (after British designs) with striking power in mind while U.S. ships were based on staying power. The Japs fell behind in technology in all areas and never caught up. Show me YOUR evidence.
Your opinion is that the only reason we won the war in the pacific is because of our numbers? Totally stupid. So the fact that the Japanese had a HUGE advantage in numbers at and MIDWAY means they should have won right? What a retard. Impossible you say? What that the Iowa could not beat the Yamato? B.S. The Japanese started out ahead of us in tech in SOME areas... notably torpedoes and fighters. They were behind everywhere else. Hell there fleet was full of BB's built in the 20's.
You are right Jusgrowinup. They become loose cannon. But the Chinese will keep them at bay. I am just waiting for what China want to do now with their Navy. I am not surprise if they are starting to plan on their first Carrier.. Afterall they buy two then Soviet pride Carrier Moskba and Kiev after cold war and turn it into museum. What a joke!! Hey remember they once have the biggest fleet in Admiral Zhanghe long before Spanish and British Armada and size of all the European fleet put together.
Thanks guys. Its just a polite opinion from me. Ya, I am not a General or an Admiral. I am just ex-army Lt but my interest was in Maritime as I have a degree in Naval Architecture. I have traverse countless time across the Indian, Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean on several vessel types. Gbrltr was right. The Japanese then focus too much on military conquest. I guest its been like that since their Shogun and Samurai time. But after WW2 their focus was on economic power. How about you hisholyhovin?
yea Japan has been all about conquest until after ww2. but when they opened their doors to the western U.S. they became a loos cannon and thats when their empire started to grow. correct me if im wrong Lt.
The Japanese learn fast. They bought a battleship from Britain and name it Mikasa, before their Russian conflict in the Battle of Tsushima. Their Japanese fleet wipe-out the entire Russian Baltic fleet which nearly twice their strength. It voice down to fighting spirit. Kevintrany was right. They got Hitlers influence too much.
The Russian fleet was a joke, worn out obsolete ships, exhausted crews, inferior and too-varied guns, just sailed from the Baltic; an epic in itself! Most if not all the Japanese capital ships were British built by the way, and probably all were British designed. Too bad Japanese only studied how to make war and weapons. Could have saved themselves and the world a lot of misery.
Hello... Put it this way. I am Singaporean and let me give a fair assessment. Yamato, Missouri, Bismark and Prince of Wales. If all of these battleship were to go for a dog fight battleship to battleship and no involvement of planes just like in the battle of Tsushima. Prince of Wales will go down within half an hour, and next to turn turtle will be Bismark. Missouri will last at least 2 hours before sinking but Yamato will be badly damage. Non biase opinion from me on this naval warfare.
and on what authority or expertise do u speak?are u a naval maritime engineer?did u develop the weaponry of these weapons?did u train or study the training of the naval doctrines of each of these navies?
i did not.thats why i dont dare to give assesments of ships that were up running sixty yrs ago.especially when i have not seen them up close or seen their capabilities.too many armchair generals and admirals on this site.
The thing is....US BBs have modern radar and able to direct the guns whereas IJN Yamato still relies on old method to find and sink the enemy. Sure it has 18.1 gun but it is useless if it cannot see the target that it needs to hit.
To me, in order to able to hit anything, you need to be able to see it first. Excellent situational awareness will save your day anyday, anytime.
Japenese were like the best Asian country back than but they got under hitlers influence and fell, if hitler never gotten them into battle Japan would dominate right noew even more
Iowa class were better and it's been proven with detailed computer simulations. The Iowa's had a faster rate of fire and could manueuver faster. The key thing here that no one seems to mention is the fact that the Iowa's had better gunnery control and unless the Yamato's got lucky early with a near miss that knocked out the Iowa's gunnery radar it is expert opinion that the Iowa's are the better ship. Arizona / Nevada class would stand little chance but again an lucky hit could mean victory.
Nobody should be calling other people names. The Japanese are a very proud people. Sure they commited Atrocities but who hasnt. I mean the U.S had Japanese Internment camps. We America have done bad things also. That makes us equal. Yes I also love America as any American would so if anybody calls me anti-american they are wrong. Besides fighting like this will refuse the scars of WW2 to heal. Its Pointless becuase its like 60 years after Pearl Harbor. PLZ STOP FIGHTING. ITS POINTLESS!!!
Were not the only ones. Cortez destroyed the Aztec in the name of Spain much more completely than we did, there is nothing left of them, or their culture. Primitive tribes usually get destroyed by a technologically superior force. The breaking of treaties by the US govt was a very bad thing to do, and not very honorable. But at the time the natives were considered savages, and not of any importance.
If we had not landed here someone else would have and would have and maybe done worse. Let it go. My ancestors were Irish/Germans yet I am a "Native American" like you because I was born here too... LIKE YOU. Your ancestors came from Asia. Now we are ALL AMERICANS. We need to unite or we will surely fall.
And, you filthy racist, im an American, it dosnt matter about my screen name. Its a famous quote from ancient greek times, meaning "greed is the root of all evil"
Only a Greek like you would have that narrow minded thinking. LOL... The Yamato would not stand a chance against a torpedo boat let alone the All-time champion of the seas: USS IOWA!!! GO IOWA! Down with the Yamato. Wait, it is down! WAY DOWN on the bottom of the sea.... too bad you are not with it!
i think that if hitler helped the jappanese in the war they might of won but the japs were great warriors and they faught for there country and i like them but i think that the imperial goverment did a bad thing and some people agree with them
The Yamato class vessels were an inovation in modern battleship construction & yes they were indeed powerful. to Eatyaup the Japanese navy men who died for their country in that brutal war were just following orders from their Imperial government. In the end they were just people.
Now 60 + years later Japan is one of the most democratic nations in the world & they strive for peace.
Except for the right wing ones but thats everywhere.
You are right about disgraceful stab-in-the-back attack by Japanese Imperial Navy. But You slope headed, fish eatingthe way of your expression makes the readers feel you are uneducated.
HAHAHA the Iowa would be hard pressed if it ever got into the range of the Yamato, i'd feel bad about the sailors on the Arizona if it ever got itself caught with 18.1 inch shells ripping through the Arizona.
I agree, the Yamato was the most beautiful BB launched (aside that it mounted the largest calibre guns, had the thickest armour, and even had AC to the Admiral's quarters)
To bad that the metallurgy of the armour was not like the US STS and side hardened main armour bely plates. Also, the 18in guns could have been extended by a 9th more for a faster muzzle velocity. And poor electronics (no radar gun directing etc) were a disadvantage to US fast BBs
Haters need to get over themselves...i'm Thai but i still like Japanese stuff...and the Japanese did do many evil things in my country...but thats ancient history...iswearitellthetruth leave my country outta this...
we don't care about that, japan killed aroud 20 millions chinese and millions from korea and thailland and malaysia one day japan will be washed from the sin and atrocity made by japenese but that price will be high this time.
because we don't forget we wait for the Revenge. (nuke will be used !!!)
Yes, the Imperial Japanese Armed Forces killed millions of people in the 2nd Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War. I really regret that and fell sorry for these countries.
The Soviet Union decleared war on Japan in Augst 1945 and occupied Manchuria and Sakhalin and Kuril Islands. After that, more than 1 million captive japanese were sent into forced labor by Soviet Government.
I want reconciliation. If Russia nukes Japan, you have to face the consequence.
Why is there always have to be anti-japanese assholes, who can't let the past go when Japan is nothing close to what it was 70+ years ago and the generations born after world war 2 are far different now. do u really think they need to be punished more after 2 atomic bombs because if you do. then your no different than the japanese from 70 years ago and to hold hate like this is just amazingly stupid.

I think the yamato had 18inch guns which are very big , us guns were kept smaller since us battleships had to have a smaller beam to fit through the panama canal. I believe the biggest us guns were 16 inch.

The Japanese can have time to create Yamato Museum because that was their Naval pride. American do not have to as they have too many. They even have problem getting rid of the obsolete one. Just their 10 Nimitz Class Carriers are un-match by any now.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
The Japanese Navy has made a blunder of their own Empire. They do not have the resources like the Americans. Adm Yamamoto knew it was a mistake as he spend years in the US and studied in Harvard. As what Stucker868 have stated. Even their steel were brittle. The Shinano (yamato sister ship) proof that. However, if the battle between the Missouri and Yamato do take place. It will be fantastic. No offence but gut feeling make me take Yamato to win. I bet, Adm Nimitz did feel will likewise.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
Actually, they US Naval forces were only to eager to fight a surface engagement, Battleship to Battleship with either the Musashi or the Yamato. Well, who would win would depend on the time of day of the battle, the range at which the Yamato discovers the enemy or vice verce. A night battle would give the US forces the edge, better radar. If the Yamato was over the horizon and firing shells, she would have the edge.
Renshen1957 2 years ago
Not to discount the bravery of the crew of Yamato. Enemy or not, they had some nuts to do what they did, knowing they weren't coming home. R.I.P.

Yamato had heavier armor than the Iowa class, but the inner bulkheads were much thicker and entirely constructed of STS armor plate throughout on the Iowas. Once a shell penetrated the belt or deck, the damage was far better contained on the US ships.
AmericanThunder 2 years ago
STUCKER868 was right. The Japanese were stagnant. They just depend on their Zero's until the war end. While the American's develop the P-51 Mustang and others. I thinks Adm Yamamoto, knew it was a mistake. But he have to follow the Emperor wish.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
When the Japanese lost the four carriers, they also lost hundreds of the finest pilots that took part in the attack on Pearl Harbour. Those plane that came back form the attack on Midway Island got no where to land the plane but the Pacific Ocean. Sad indeed. Even the new Yamato class carrier Shinano was sunk by topedo within days of it launch. So the subsequent naval battles whose fleet without plane cover is like WW1 (Japanese) vesus WW2 (American) who had air-cover.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
In the battle of Midway its just that the Japanese did not know that the three American carriers in Hornet, Yorktown and Enterprise were around the vicinity, until IJN Kaga, Akagi, and Hiryu sunk. Whereas Adm Nimitz men has broken the code of the impending Japanese attack on Midway and has reinforce their forces there. As such American has larger number as compared to the Japanese in that Battle. So the last remaining carrier IJN Soryu with eighty planes in nowhere compare to American hundreds.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
So, he let the two IJN's fight their life with the planes.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago
Most surface engagements were decided in minutes.. (Bismarck Vs. Hood) Yamato would be pulverized by the radar controlled gunnery of the Iowa. The Yamato has to be able to see it's target and at 25 miles away that is impossible. Plus Iowa will be moving very fast and aquire a target in moments. REMEMBER... you dont have to sink a ship to destroy it. A crushed superstructure with no command structure is a dead ship.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
I did see a lot of salvo being fired from STUCKER868. I guess you're American? Ya, Japan attack on the America was a grave mistake. Even Adm Yamamoto who studied in Harvard had said that "they have awaken the sleeping Giant" when they attack Pearl Harbour. He also added that if Japan were to start the war with the American, they have to be prepared to march from LA all the way New York. But I guess the Japanese have no choice then. It's a matter of time they will be at war with the America.

hogwar9999 2 years ago
They did buy alot of steel from the US. However to claim the Yamato was made from pure US made steel and this was hidden by the Japanese so they would not have to admit that is silly. Cypiditas has a bad way of spewing forth unfounded "facts" but cant back them up. His comments are sloppy (such as stating the Yamato was commissioned in 1940 rather then 41.) Take what he says carefully. He also claims it would be "impossible" for the USS Iowa to defeat IJN Yamato in battle." Hahahaha
STUCKER868 2 years ago
No, the steel used to make the yamato was from ships bought from russia, and the russians bought those from the americans, then the japanese named it their own steel because it wouldnt look so great in the press if your battleship was made of old american ships
Cypiditas 2 years ago
No, The steel used to make the Yamato was of Japanese design (a copy of British Vickers smelting processes) made mostly of BRITISH metals. Check the web, it's all over the place. You make it sound like they sailed old American ships into Kure harbor, dismantled them and then slapped the metal on the frame of Yamato. Show me your sources.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
It was made from all kinds of scrap metals brought in from all over Japan The original source is still Iron Ore that had to be re-smelted in the Japanese process. It was somewhat brittle and similar to WW1 British VH steel. The Brits built the KONGO for Japan and Japan being the copy-cats they are made clones. Cypiditas, you make ignorant statements on this and other forums about YAMATO (such as she was commisioned in 1940 when in reality it was Dec of 1941.) Face it, you are WRONG.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Name your sources. The Japanese imported tons of old steel (alot from England) so the final smelted product was a mishmash of various steel. It was considered brittle. The Yamato was NOT made from steel purely from American ships. SHOW ME YOUR SOURCES to back up your claims.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Found an original source document that destroys your statement that Yamato was made of U.S. steel. The document: "Reports Of The U.S. Technical Mission To Japan." Study of it will reveal: "In their smelting processes for PL10-13 plates, for additives, the Japanese were known to use up to 65%-75% scrap steels, sources unknown. The raw stock iron base however is almost certainly Manchurian." You hear that Cypiditas? MANCHURIAN. The Yamatos armor plates came from ore from Manchuria.

the iowa class battleship,
the iowa class of battle ship was the most powerful and advanced battleship of the U.S navy, designed as "fast" battleships they were capable of escorting a quick carrier force mounting nine 16"/50 main guns, improved radar, no ship could beat the iowa in long range combat the large number of 5" guns gave exelent prorection from air attack and allthough the yamamoto class armor was slightly better the iowas speed and manoverability could not be discounted.
PilotBoris 2 years ago
Correct except I will debate with you that although Yamato had thicker armor in places, the armor was of inferior smelting processes and considered brittle by US standards. Ever see the pic of the front barbette plate (26" that was supposed to go on Shinano) pierced completely at 40,000 yards by an Iowa 16" round for testing purposes? The US armor was made of a special hardened steel and design to decap 18.5" rounds.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Better oh s*** I agree with your statement and next time I comment I hope it's not at 1 in the morning like my previous comment.
PilotBoris 2 years ago
Yes, I have seen it. Its still at Dahlgren Naval Weapons center in Virginia (so are the 8" guns of Prinz Eugen fyi). It was shot at 30,000 yards by a 2,700lb AP shell from a Mark-6 gun (North Carolina, South Dakota class main guns) twice. Both shells went completely through it, the second shattering the armored turret faceplate and breaking it in half.
Cirux321 2 years ago
As far as the Prinz Eugen goes... I met a man who was in the USN during WW2 and he said he helped sail the Eugen to Bikini for the tests.... it has a skeleton German crew to help and he said it was the cleanest ship inside and out he ever saw! Spotless inside and out.... not a barnacle on her and the paint looked new.

STUCKER868 2 years ago
STUCKER868 2 years ago
My evidence = Put the yamato against the Iowa, 1vs1, Yamato would win because of its sheer Armour and weapon systems. face it, you cant run from nine 18.1 inch naval Guns that shoot 26.1 miles far. Plus, her second line of defense were twelve 6.1 inch naval guns, AND had twelve 5 inch naval guns. The yamato had the most advanced weapons of the day. A iwoa could not run from a ship firing 33 shells of varying size in one volley. Stop being proud and look at the truth -.-
Cypiditas 2 years ago
WRONG again. The Iowa had a faster firing rate vs. Yamato and it has been proven the damage caused by the 18.1" shells of Yamato vs. the 16" of the Iowa are quite similar. The 16's on the Iowa fired round with a higher velocity also. The only armor advantage the Yamato's had was on the frontal turret armor, otherwise quite similar except the Iowas had a HIGHER QUALITY steel. Bottom line is you are an idiot. Stop being stooopid and look at the truth.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Not to mention the Iowa's advanced gunnery radar would cause very accurate long range salvos that would wreck the Yamato's before they could range in. Of course they could get lucky, but it has been proven in compute simulations almost 85% of the time the Iowa's win.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
That's not evidence stoooopid, it's your lame opinion. I want sources of some type, names of books you read (if you can read) or even websites that SUPPORT what you say.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Wow, you really are a dipshit arnt you, rofl. Google Yamato. it will give you the weapons armour etc. And with the rador thing, all the yamato would have to do is do a well placed volley on the Rader array, and the iwoa would be blind. And, also on many websites, the iwoa's armour on the main deck guns were lacking, so well placed shots at the magazines would cause tonnes of amunition to explode, causing mass damage to the ship itself. The iwoa would be screwed if that happened to it.
Cypiditas 2 years ago
Cypiditas 2 years ago
The Japanese were "alot more technically adept then us? WRONG! The Iowa's were made with a special hardened steel. They also were designed later then the Yamatos. They could turn sharper and were faster. They had better gunnery control (radar) etc etc etc. The Japanese designed their ships (after British designs) with striking power in mind while U.S. ships were based on staying power. The Japs fell behind in technology in all areas and never caught up. Show me YOUR evidence.
STUCKER868 2 years ago
Your opinion is that the only reason we won the war in the pacific is because of our numbers? Totally stupid. So the fact that the Japanese had a HUGE advantage in numbers at and MIDWAY means they should have won right? What a retard. Impossible you say? What that the Iowa could not beat the Yamato? B.S. The Japanese started out ahead of us in tech in SOME areas... notably torpedoes and fighters. They were behind everywhere else. Hell there fleet was full of BB's built in the 20's.

They got Hitlers influence too much.
ishakbinhayat 2 years ago

Why were the photographs all taken on April 20? That's the birthday anniversary of one of the most notorious persons in human history!
I'll leave you to guess his name.
