@ingeralhaosului Nope genius, antimatter would just add to the black hole's mass content. EM radiation can't escape a black hole, so any annihilation reaction occuring inside the radius of the event horizon would remain trapped. You'd have to use a theoretical form of exotic matter with negative mass, but it would be extremely difficult since 'positive' and 'negative' matter would repel each other violently (unlike opposite electric charges, which attract each other). (AM has positive mass too).
@Brekkir BUT, you are forgetting that adding an equal amount of antimatter to a black hole would annihilate the entire mass of the black hole into pure energy. Energy that would then escape beCAUSE...there would then be no black hole! A black hole' gravity is powered by it's mass, and annihilating that mass would also remove it's gravitational force. Take the entire mass of the black hole, multiply it by c^2, then double the product, and you get an idea of the energy released.
@ramv36 though most likely trying to introduce that much antimatter, technically a black hole in itself due to the amount of matter required, would cause the two objects to orbit each other for millions of years, faster and faster, causing unimaginably immense tidal forces across an area vastly larger than the original object. This would of course be more violent still as you consider matter annihilation would be occurring regularly as the 'anti'-black hole consumed regular matter...
The bombs themselves don't explode into a supernova. They're not like a nuke. What they do is remove the effect of gravity from an area. The only thing keeping a star from going nova is its gravity. Once you remove the gravity the star cant hold itself together and the nuclear forces that want to blow it up... do. I'd assume they can change the yield to make a planet fall apart instead of a star. A star explosion would be best against a large fleet, destroying everything in the entire system.
So... just with a few nova bombs they turn something that sucks everything into it into something that spews everything out? I'm not really buying it.
Yeah. I would assume that they would operate upon similar principles as a select-a-yield device that some nuclear munitions, especially carrier based nukes, would use? On board a vessel, you have limited space for munitions, personnel, supplies, fuel, etc. Special weapons, if ever the need to be employed in combat, would have to have the ability for a selected yield for specific targets, in order to minimize collateral damage to unintended targets, or maximize yield for heavy hitting...
...and maximum destructive potential. It would be relative to the specific mission requirements and strike orders. On board a ship, one special weapon would have to be designed to fulfill multiple mission requirements and, yes, I agree. A full yield Nova Bomb would most likely destroy an entire system, relative to the system size, I suppose? Many variables...I assume.
@hoppers001 the bomb only pack the power of a supernova if it hits a star. If it detonates in empty space you can detect its effects using sensors but that is about it.
The first two seasons rocked but after that things got a bit stale. After the first few epsiodes the quality really improved and by Season 5, while the plot wasnt the best the detail was. Its a shame SciFi had to end it. Now SciFi has cut Stargate and their precious baby Battlestar Galactica is ending. SciFi threw tons of money into Galactica and then the producers decided this next season would be it. I bet it pissed SciFi off. Atleast they kept Atlantis
Nova bombs rock!

I also love it, that you need the permission of all the Crewmembers to use Nova Bombs. And not just the Captain who simply orders to blow shit up.

@cybernako088 in order to destabilize a black hole using antimater one has to use a equal amount of antimater.

Well, let's see you actually show some proof to support it.

@VazzaPrime actually they dont use antimatter in andromeda a nova bomb is made of voltarium

soooooooooooo....what happened with those nova bombs?
Jameson171 4 years ago
nothing realy interesting ;)
They're just turning a black into a white hole (mini Big Bang) and use the Shockwave to get the Andromeda free from the Gravity. ^^

If you've got enough firepower in those bombs to destroy 40 earth-size planets, that's bound to do something dramatic even to a black hole.

Actually, Nova bomb can take out whole system :)

you know they fired salvos of bombs that each pack the power of a supernova.
hoppers001 2 years ago
No. The bombs just destabilized the gravity of suns (causing them to supernova).
tom9729 2 years ago 6
no each bomb is literally a supernova in one.

That show looks so cheap and daggy (sorry). Oh and look, they have a Ronon too!

I thought so too, at first but it grows on you, this is from its first few episodes so it will look cheap.
And remember, every scifi has its strong, yet misunderstood aliens. Not only Atlantis!!
