My Mom took me to see this back then, I was 9 years old. At the time I thought the main character was being foolish, later I realized he was being a man. The movie had a line that I always remembered for it's ominous portent, "Telephone call for John W. Burns", delivered by George Kennedy. It's always been one of my favorite movies.
Number 4 on my all time favorite movies. A very straight forward, yet complex, movie. We all pull so hard for Jack because he has the guts to go against the stinking system..he is the Brave...yet he tells his friend Paul's wife that, actually he is NOT...that Paul is the brave one for settling down and loving and raising a family and standing up to the system by helping others...very, very deep movie...one of the greatest ever put out. and the score by Goldsmith is classic.
@jsbeerman Actually, Kirk Douglas was at one point in talks to star in First Blood, but wanted the script to stay very close to the novel and got booted off by the film's producers.
One of the saddest final scenes in cinema history.
