  • I'm a 78 year old grandmother, who loved rock and roll and rhythm and blues in its prime in the 50s.Bought all my 78s and 45s at the black record stores in Paterson,NJ.My music was not being sold in record stores where all the pop music was sold!!Johnny Ace was one of a kind, and I still get chills as I did the first time listening to him.Such a waste!!

  • i used to dance w/my girl friend when this song played. those were the days

  • I was in bed, late Dec, 24 1954, tune to randys out of nashville tn, when the said on air, johnny ace just shot himself, i was in high school, we cried, he was the best, and the king. my name is george, the doc.

  • What a tragedy. His songs were very sad, but beautiful. If you listened to them then, you could tell that he was very sad. I remember reading about his "Russian Roulette" suicide in the Jet magazine. Such a talented artist.

  • He commited suicide only after a few songs

  • i first heard john holt sing this in the 70s

  • The sax solo with the tinkling piano is genius on this arrangement!

  • song makes me cry

  • It sounds like it was recorded near a lighthouse or something. It's rich but still subtle. Best Johnny Ace song in my opinion. R.I.P.

  • Beleave clyde mcphater also does a great cover of this.

  • WHAT MOVIE WAS THIS PLAYED IN???

  • @sktangueray Lol...very funny! ;-)

  • This is one of the first songsI remember from the 50s.Some people would argue that this was the start of rock and roll in Cleveland OH. oldmanlovesmusic..................

  • @oldmanlovesmusic EARTH ANGEL,,IN THE STILL OF THE NIGHT,,TUTTI FRUTTI came before

  • @oldmanlovesmusic Yeah I love JOHNNY ACE and all that BUT this was not the start of R&R in Cleveland,,,Alan Freed 'coined" the phrase ROCK&ROLL when he worked in Cleveland. ROCKET 88 by IKE TURNER's crew is considered by some as the beginning,,I personally think R&R started in KANSAS CITY with BIG JOE TURNER and others.

  • gsavage115 And in Baltimore with the Orioles, and in Chicago with Muddy Waters.

  • This is one of the first songsI remember from the 50s.Some people would argue that this was the start of rock and roll in Cleveland OH.

  • Tears in my eyes every time.

    Bless mummy RIP

  • johnny ace

  • what a nice song it brings back lots of memories

  • Fine!

  • i was a very young girl still on the farm when this was popular---soo good

  • Great doo wop song, it's strange i have this on a 78 rpm and before the song starts you can hear the clock tick tocking for a few seconds i guess the must of edited out when it was

released on 45 rpm or LP...

  • @sopaman1234 PROBABLY WAS. The one JOHN R played on WLAC years ago had the tick tock my 45 didn't. Funny how WE remember those little things. I love the "very" ending of NEVER MY LOVE by THE ASSOCIATION but the oldies stations ALWAYS fade it out. PISSES YA OFF

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 Yeah that really stinks when they do that

i love thier version of Cherish....

  • I've listened to this song so many times I lost count! Anyways, this is the first Johnny Ace song I've ever heard and I love it. I wish the newer love songs were like this. There's too much crap on the radio these days that lack substance. This song is very short and simple but you can hear the venerability and sorrow in his voice. What a talented guy!

    RIP Johnny Ace...

  • @LadyofWar1980 I live NEXT DOOR and you listened to it 9,475,563 times.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 I'm sorry you had to witness my OCD first hand!

  • @LadyofWar1980 I don't mind the OCD so much anymore,,,however the SNORING is beginning to be a bigger problem than the OCD. I was IN RADIO for years and Pledging My Love,,Earth Angel,,,Still of the night,,,Chapel of dreams etc etc were some of the first R&R records that I remember playing. Could this be Magic by THE DUBS really gets my little love motor running.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 You mean...you can STILL hear the snoring at night? Damn those thin walls! LoL!

The Dubs, eh? I never heard of them. I'll have to check them out. That song has got to be on YT somewhere. Thanks for the suggestion!

Your love motor....tee hee hee! XD

  • @LadyofWar1980 I think we're in trouble,,My wife got up during the night to do something and she swears she heard me saying oooOOWEE LadyofWar,,LadyofWar over and over in my sleep. of course I still have one up on her,,,I fell outa bed a while back and HIT THE WALL,,,she sat right up and said ARE YOU ALRIGHT TOM ?? my name ain't Tom,,she swears she was dreaming of TOM SELLECK,,,ummm but I still wonder.

  • @THEMOJOMANsince1959 The DUBS "COULD THIS BE MAGIC" and CHAPEL OF DREAMS and their other hits.

  • @LadyofWar1980 The Dubs,,,Could this be Magic,,,Chapel of dreams,,,and especially DON'T ASK ME TO BE LONELY love this one

  • TIMELESS TUNE!!!

  • what a beautiful song and a sad loss to music:(

  • @waylo4526 Yeah!! so true, but, what's really's sad is the way he died

playing russian roulette before or after his concert....

  • Man do i remember Gallatin,Tenn.hey JR what you going to do come on JR play me some rhythm and blues.Living in Warrior,Al at the time i would go to sleep with that battery radio, yes racism was bad but the music was great.

  • @vssjks HERE YA GO This is ole JOHN R way down south in DIXIE on WLAC the voice of the LIFE&CASUALITY INS. CO at the 1510 spot on your radio dial in NASHVILLE,TENN. (sound familiar ?)

  • what a great voice johnny had. 5*

  • DAMN YOU GOT ME STUCK ON THESE JAMS.

  • i think you are back again good i recognize some of the old cars ---i was on our family farm picking cotton when this was popular-sometimes in the 50's

  • You really have to go to satellite radio or

YT to get a real fill of this type of music.

  • i was in jr high when this was popular-i used to stay up nights and listen to gallatin, tennessee with an old radio-could not hardly get houston station which we were 30 miles from but could get gallatin, tennessee---this kinda music made my dad mad-i was supposed to listen to floyd tilman and jimmy rogers

  • johnny ace what an amazing singer with a wonderful tone many tribute songs where written when this guy died he left this mortal coil so young but left a brilliant legacy just listen too "pledging my love".

  • This is so wonderful !!!!!.Well, I was just 15 when I 1st heard JA. Sad ending huh?

  • WOW THIS IS A AWESOME OLDIE! TINAS

  • ''This is soothing to the ears''....

  • This song aught to be on WCBS-FM 101.1 like it used to be. How do the people who run a radio station know what the people want to hear, is there a little man in the radio that tells the radio station that they are being listened to?

  • They don't even have a specialty show for it. But in NYC, There's a program that comes on Sat mornings that plays this kind of stuff.

  • Johnny ace a great voice Im from houston we listened all the time in those days kyok radio kent

  • i remember kyok-i used to hold the radio in my lap because i told my mother and father i could pick up station better--i had never heard of an antenna at that time-i was about 10 yrs old and was not supposed to listen to black music---but i am almost 69 and it never left me

u can only feel this way, if you listen to oldies..best kind of music in this side of the world!

  • I guess you have to have lived in those days. Nothing like it before nor since. My "ol'lady" was born in 64, but Ive got her turned on to this music too. I'm pushing 69. Just hope to drop dead some day still on the seat of that Harley. And thank you MRSCANDALOUS for the vid.

  • Okay, I'm 56. Thinking of my ex-wife. Listening to this song. And I'm crying like a three-year old. I miss you Johnny Ace. Sorry Jan.
