cool man! sounds like you're ready to take the "tongue-blocking plunge." stick with it 'til it's second nature. instrumental inspiration, something to aspire to, is a must in order make your harp a saxophone; i.e., rockin to some swingin Little Walter (in the beginning, hitting the itunes pause button often) until you can replicate most of his stuff in your sleep. to be clear, this is NOT harmonica elitism; all's i'm sayin is singing through your harp--to any type of moving music--is really FUN.
great sound, but have you tried it on a b flat I do it in b flat with a band called Four penny rock (see facebook) and it sounds more gritty in that key, but I love your tone, and always like the stuff you put up on youtube.
I'm guessing it's mainly getting as much of the harp in your mouth as possible. If you tense your mouth unnecessarily, it changes the sound to a weak, thin sound...Play with different mouth shapes to see what works for you.
really really wanna be able to play this song, but cant get that awsome, soulfull wailing sound, im using a hohner blues harp in c. i think the tab i am using is wrong, any tips? cheers
Its not about the harp. Its the mike and amp that creates that sound. Try turning the gain up on your amp. As far as mikes go an SM58 is as good as anything else.
Your quick-style improvisationss sure seem popular with YOUR subscribers.
Still, sometimes it's not about playing a lot of notes in a short time span, but instead playing very few of the right notes at precisely the right time.
i like it. you should do one up to tempo just to hear how it sounds, or record a backing guitar or something. sounds a bit... eerie on it's own. like something you'd hear going down a raft in some jungle at midnight ._.
Thanks for the kind words. Truth be told, if I were to do it over, I would have changed half a dozen things, like the phrasing, and the key of harp used, but hey man, that's just hindsight and looking back now from the perspective of a more experience harmonica player.
wow man! great! what I love about the harmonica is all that soul and pain (or sorrow) that little instrument it can catch on its way out from your heart!
I managed that one in a single take on the first try. This is not usually the case. I now think I could have added some flourishes, but even some pick'n'strum would complement this and flesh it out.
no tab? this seems different from any i find online
djorourke94 2 weeks ago
@djorourke94
I play by ear, so I don't have tabs to give. It's fairly straightforward though. If memory serves, I played with a 'C' Hohner Special 20.

I may eventually devote myself to learning how to tongue-block.
Right now, I'm learning how to code.
(Code for dough, play for show..)
When I get the opportunity, I'd love to put in the man-hours to master a great many things.
Cheers!

Takes a lot of time to figure the key when I'm wanting to play along. I think this is in the key of H or J
Kenneth1944 2 years ago
Too funny. I'll actually have to take the time to have a listen eventually and change my liner notes to include the key.

Sorry buddy, but I never worked off of tabs for the song.
I don't work off tabs for any of my covers, actually.
You should be able to figure this one out pretty quick though.
Melody isn't particularly elusive.
You COULD try harptabs (dot) com though. They might have tabs for you....

Actually, I play everything by ear, so I don't have the tabs to give.
It's actually shouldn't be too difficult a tune to figure out though.
(Took me all of 10 minutes to work it out)
kokoro86 4 years ago
the harmonica is a C one?
Franciskinho 4 years ago
I had to think for a minute
(I posted this half a year ago)
Yes, I did choose a C harp for this one, but I'd say feel free to try different keyed harps and positions and see what kind of groove you fall into.
