@richieallport i listen to Floyd most everyday, i havent smoke pot or done acid ever. not that im one of those super conservatives thats totally against it.
Well i have tried most drugs in my younger years believe me man they all enhanced the floyd experience. I'm 100% drug free nowadays but these tunes bring back some good memories ;X
Is it a message that tells us we can do all kinds of things to amuse us, but we can never really enjoy them as long as we don't trust each other? (hence the backs to the wall, as in protection from backstabbing?)
@nightlydruid Actually, it's meant to represent the various ways in which rock stars (and society in general) fill their lives with meaningless material posessions, trying to replace human contact and relationships with them. Instead of filling a void, they only fuel the feeling of isolation and alienation (the wall)
@47issues Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to old pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont. Roger! Caroline is on the Phone
Do tours of the east? Contract diseases? Bury bones? Break up homes? Send flowers by phone? Take to drink? Go to shrinks? Give up meat? Rarely sleep? Keep people as pets? Train dogs? Raise rats? Fill the attic with cash? Bury treasure? Store up leisure? But never relax at all With our backs to the wall
The lyrics to this are so brilliant I wanted to post them but apparently it's going to take 2 postings due to the length. Sorry! But I think it's worth it. What shall we use to fill the empty spaces Where waves of hunger roar? Shall we set out across this sea of faces In search of more and more applause? Shall we buy a new guitar? Shall we drive a more powerful car? Shall we work straight through the night? Shall we get into fights? Leave the lights on Drop bombs
it was orriginally supposed to be but they couldnt fit it on a vinyl (sorry if i spelled that wrong) so the album version is basically the opening with slightly altered lyrics and leads in Young Lust
Favorite part of the movie, love Pink Floyd but the movie gets hard to watch, great music though, but though it sacred me when I was younger but now my favorite scene and song in the movie
It's all about space. In the olden days all they had were these now legendary things called vinyl LPs. And they were good. Except for the fact that 22 minutes of music on one side is all ya got, that is. Anything longer required a disc that required a different playspeed and degraded sound quality. Add to the fact that the song order couldn't be jumbled and you lose this gem. It really should have been released as a special CD mix or something though
Aww, you should have uploaded the ending bit to this scene as well, where the burglars are arrested and two old ladies sneak up and steal everything from the smashed window :P
@mdogmilhouse91 yeah maybe your right. but this is still pretty awesome and so is the nazis rally when he sings in the flesh. doesnt matter this is the best movie in the world
when i first saw the film (11 years), my mom said me, the film is very sadly and i did not understood why, but now (14 years) i saw it and i understood that, and why my mom said me that
they NEED to post this song on itunes! and i mean this version. the live one that they do have is ok, but they cut out the beginning, which is a disappointment.
I really like this song. It just as good as some of Pink Floyd's greatest hits. When I first heard this song it blew me away. Too bad Itunes isn't selling it. I would really like to have What Shall We Do Now? on my Ipod. I mean it was on the album so I dont understand why Itunes wouldn't be selling it.
@dolphins170 The song on the original "Wall" album is actually a shorter version called "Empty Spaces;" this particular recording was never released other than this appearance on the soundtrack of the film (although you can hear a live version on the double album "Is there anybody out there?")
@jjobie I beg to differ my friend. I have the original vinyl record of this album and it is commpletely different from any other version of it (mainly the cd). for starters this song and "Empty Spaces" both appear on it. Plus "Empty Spaces" comes in between "Don't Leave Me Now" and "Another brick in the wall part 3." Also "Hey You" comes in between "Cumfortably Numb" and "The show must go on." Sorry if I come off as a jerk I don't mean to.
@dolphins170 - what edition do have? Is it an import? I can't speak for what's on the CD as the only CD version I have is the one that's included in the "Shine On" boxed set.
But~
Ah! I get it now. Ok, If you're going by the printed lyrics (on the actual sleeves for the two LPs in the original release) then I know what it is: The songs on the sleeves are not only printed out of order, but "What Shall we Do Now" isn't on the LP itself. Give the LP a listen again, you'll see what I mean...
@jjobie I would listen to the album again but the Lp's got warped. So there is no way to listen to the album again ecause the songs are scratchy and they skip every 2 seconds.
@DKrazzDK Yes it is What Shall We Do Now, it's a variation of the Album Version "Empty Spaces" That was created for the movie, if you listen to the both of them you will notice an obvious difference... mainly "What Shall We Do Now?" is longer with different lyrics.
Actually, this was the second part of Empty Spaces, but it was too long to put on Vinyl. So instead, they included it in the movie and called it "What Shall We do now?"
@nhlrotti actually i like free stuff if it's available, which is is. It's not available for purchase but I d/led a program that let me convert this video to mp3 :) neener neener
You'll actually find lyrics for both versions in the lyric booklet for The Wall album/CD. Waters had wanted to have both songs on the album, one being a reprise of the other, kind of like how he squeezed in two versions of "In The Flesh/?" on there. But by the time they realized they couldn't fit both tracks onto the 4 album sides, it was too late to revamp the album lyric booklet, as it had already gone to press.
Actually the song is called What shall we do now? the shortened album version is called Empty Spaces, they had to shorten What shall we do now? because of the time constraints on an album but the movie still got the full version of the song hence why it's called What shall we do now? on the movie and Empty Spaces on the album.
actually this is what shall we use - Because this song isnt on the album, they cut it out. it's only on the actual DVD of the wall. I always wondered why i couldnt find it on the album :\
It's not 'what shall we do now', it's 'what shall we use?'. The song is Empty Spaces and he's referring to what they should use to fill the empty spaces.
the movie came out after the album...but technically people first heard "what shall we do now" during their 1980-81 tour "Is there anybody out there... Live". you can get that very album that contains this song
because when the band made the song it wouldn't fit on the LP due to the very little time they could fit into it. so they skimmed down and made a very smaller version of the song know as "empty spaces".
When i first saw this I didn't get what the flowers were (even though I was 13) and just thought it was some pretty cool animation. Then I showed my friend and she didn't get it either. And then I showed my brother and he didn't get it. And then I was watching the movie with my mom... and of course it was just then that I understood. How embarrassing...
It's called What Shall We Do Now? on the movie. It's a different version, longer with an whole other faster, second part. Empty Spaces is the shorter album version of the song. It had to be shortened to fit on the LP. It cuts off right where the drums pick up here. In all reality the proper title is What Shall We Do Now?, as the song was renamed to Empty Spaces when they had to cut off the second part, the section where the whole "Shall we... " questions come in.
No, is "What shall we do now?" a reprise of "Empty Spaces", which wasn't included in The Wall album due to space restrictions, but was included in the movie
isnt that empty spaces !?! the first part of the song befor the break down sounds almost the same but the break down that i know is ..."I am just a new boy.. stranger in his town"
well for the movie they changed a little bit of the actual empty spaces song like the lyrics at the beginning are different, but instead of going straight into the young lust part which is the "I am just a new boy.." part, they added that part here call "what shall i do now" thats what this songs breakdown part is called
@Punxerklc friend, it was actually ''What Shall We Do Now'' first. But they made it shorter in order to keep the album in current size and also took some other songs out. It's quite bullshit but it happened that way... And this volume they ever played in concerts instead of Empty Spaces as in album...
@cyaxeres Ugh such a fuckin' lame move couldn't they get rid of something else? Or release a special version of the album 'cause in this version of the song Roger Waters' voice sounds just sublime ("do tours of the east/ contract disease etc)
@zeldafan1998 for the movie but wasn't released on the album. neither was When the tigers broke free which there was a single published and was also released with te rerelease of The Final Cut
@zeldafan1998 it was one of the tracks in the album at first. But later they planned to make the album shorter and took some of the tracks out. That's just bullshit commercial but the reality, friend...
3:07-3:30 is my favorite part, pink floyd is my favorite classic rock band they're so gifted in so many levels.

because when the band made the song it wouldn't fit on the LP due to the very little time they could fit into it. so they skimmed down and made a very smaller version of the song know as "empty spaces".

@TheMadcapPiper what do the flowers mean? is it sex or something?
pinol928 1 year ago
@pinol928 well.. yeah... the one on the left is the dude parts and the one on the right is the lady parts and, well... just watch it.

What shall we do now???? This is "Empty Spaces" sir.
DpadProductions 2 years ago
It's called What Shall We Do Now? on the movie. It's a different version, longer with an whole other faster, second part. Empty Spaces is the shorter album version of the song. It had to be shortened to fit on the LP. It cuts off right where the drums pick up here. In all reality the proper title is What Shall We Do Now?, as the song was renamed to Empty Spaces when they had to cut off the second part, the section where the whole "Shall we... " questions come in.

No, is "What shall we do now?" a reprise of "Empty Spaces", which wasn't included in The Wall album due to space restrictions, but was included in the movie

isnt that empty spaces !?! the first part of the song befor the break down sounds almost the same but the break down that i know is ..."I am just a new boy.. stranger in his town"
can some one tell me what is the real version?
TheParamoreo 2 years ago
well for the movie they changed a little bit of the actual empty spaces song like the lyrics at the beginning are different, but instead of going straight into the young lust part which is the "I am just a new boy.." part, they added that part here call "what shall i do now" thats what this songs breakdown part is called

And what a tune it is too, one of my all time faves by the Floyd.

@fliflofla It's Empty Spaces.
Mechanixeu 1 year ago
@cyaxeres actually it's called "empty spaces"
Punxerklc 1 year ago
@Punxerklc friend, it was actually ''What Shall We Do Now'' first. But they made it shorter in order to keep the album in current size and also took some other songs out. It's quite bullshit but it happened that way... And this volume they ever played in concerts instead of Empty Spaces as in album...
cyaxeres 1 year ago 26
@cyaxeres oh, didn't know that :)
Punxerklc 1 year ago
@cyaxeres Ugh such a fuckin' lame move couldn't they get rid of something else? Or release a special version of the album 'cause in this version of the song Roger Waters' voice sounds just sublime ("do tours of the east/ contract disease etc)
DoopaLoopa 1 year ago
@cyaxeres Is What Shall We Do Now made only for the movie or is it in another album?
zeldafan1998 11 months ago
@zeldafan1998 for the movie but wasn't released on the album. neither was When the tigers broke free which there was a single published and was also released with te rerelease of The Final Cut
MythbustersBeatles 11 months ago
@zeldafan1998 it was one of the tracks in the album at first. But later they planned to make the album shorter and took some of the tracks out. That's just bullshit commercial but the reality, friend...
