@greyeyed123 - "The Master". It's coming out December of next year, it's currently in the post-production stages. It stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern among others - it revolves around Lancaster Dodd a psychologically and emotionally unstable individual who after his traumatic and horrific experiences in WWII creates an ideological belief system (a cult) called "The Cause".
@greyeyed123 - The film has been in production for five years and was announced back in the fall of 2009 with a working (now confirmed) title "The Master". The film has formed controversy regarding it's story, and the characteristic parallel with "Scientology" - that Anderson's ficticious religion resembles. He's (Anderson) progressively becoming more of a Kubrick not just stylistically, technically and thematically, but the release schedule for his films are getting far apart as well.
Take a movie and put Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, Leonardo Dicaprio, Keanu Reeves, Matt Daemon, Rachel Mcadams, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet as cast (some big names I can think of). And let Paul Anderson direct it.
@lattask8er dude... I'm sorry if this offends you, but Mark Wahlberg has had 2 good movies in his entire career (Boogie Nights, Three Kings) and Julia Roberts is just plain bad.
This was well made, but seriously, he had to end it with "I'm finished!", he had the scene and everything it would have been perfect, just for not doing that, this is flawed. I gave a thumbs up regardless.
The real tragedy is that the next Paul Thomas Anderson will probably never get the chance to shine because it's just not what Hollywood is looking for.
Mark my words, someone reading this comment probably has a PDF file on their computer of a script they wrote that would win Oscars and be considered one of the greats (like There Will Be Blood), yet they'll never manage to sell it.
@CaliforniaJoker1 Orson Welles made Citizen Kane on his own and had final cut over everything and people now consider it the greatest film ever but after that he complained he never got that artistic freedom again, people like PTA who have something to offer get to make their films and then have to negotiate with stupid hollywood execs which is probably why the master got put on hold for 5 years too bad
@CaliforniaJoker1 PTA has certainly had a great deal of success. I doubt he ever envisioned Michael Bay-for the masses-type success. It's not what he's going for. I'm sure his next film will be received as well as the others. And, no, I don't believe there's all these undiscovered geniuses out there. Maybe they are unknown now, but if they have the talent, they'll get there. Look at Melville, JK Toole: it took to after they were dead, but eventually people saw their talent. Cream rises.
@CaliforniaJoker1 Oh, and I think I meant "it took UNTIL after they were dead." Not "to." That's bad grammar, I think. I'm not sure. Doesn't sound good when I read it back to myself, though. Peace.
@CaliforniaJoker1 dude if any of those youtube accounts are the next PTA they will shine because sometimes people are born to make movies and PTA was born to make fucking movies bro, so don't call any of those youtubers the next PTA and say "they won't make it" because PTA made it decades ago with a video camera and sundance. We have way more equipment than PTA had at that time the sad fact is we aren't as good as him because he is one of the greatest story tellers ever
I just saw Magnolia and its now probably my favorite movie ever. Are any others of PT Anderson's as good? Or are there any other movies that are similar but from other directors? (Besides American Beauty)
@Danoftherocks Kubrick is a master of cinema and PTA is simply a great director- his film magnolia reminded me of Short Cuts more than anything not in subject matter but style and I think thats who you should be comparing him to more , PTA made there will be blood at 36 kubrick made Strangelove at 36 and went on to 2001 and then Clockwork orange Kubrick was continuously innovative in each film and PTA's going from There will be blood to inherent vice is taking 1 step foward and 2 steps back
@drstranglove79 "There will be blood to inherent vice is taking 1 step foward and 2 steps back". I'm just wondering how you are able to make a statement like this about a film that hasn't been made yet. Are you from the future? Do I lose my hair? Do you know what happened to that twenty dollar bill last year? Oh, and can I borrow the line "simply a great director"? I'm writing a book about douchebaggery, and this screams "chapter title" to me.
@Danoftherocks Nah,I mean you can definately see some Kubrick in there but also there's some Jonathan Demme, some Godard, some Fellini, some Ophuls, some Truffaut, etc in there. Either way, to me Paul Thomas Anderson will always be what you get when you combine Robert Altman with Martin Scorsese hehe.. PTA is my Favorite Director btw.
@Danoftherocks - I have a theory that Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese had a kid that grew up watching the films of Robert Altman - that today maybe known as Paul Thomas Anderson.
i despise that 'the master' is postponed... it makes me so angry, its been a while since a perfect movie has been released, i thought the master was a sure thing for a perfect film... i think the last perfect movie was Inglourious Basterds, though There Will Be Blood is probably the best movie made in the last 15 years or so
He's the type of filmmaker that I've found that every time I've watched one of his movies, any one of the five, I'll like it more than the time before- they just get better and you love em more.
@CamWholley they'll never be another Kubrick EVER. But I'm almost 100% convinced that Paul Thomas Anderson is Stanley Kubrick's only son that no one knew about. ; ) Can't wait for "The Master".
@CamWholley Yeah, but I doubt any of them will become a kubrick, especially Nolan, Kubrick was making A Clockwork Orange/ The Shining, films like the dark knight/ memento don't really compare in my opinion.
@KatesPinkZeppelin And I would argue that they do compare. Between Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception, no other contemporary director has managed to pull off a procession of films with nearly this level of consistent quality. And this is all within the course of 10 years. If he continues on the path that he's already paved for himself, who knows...
@KatesPinkZeppelin The reason I made the case is because Kubrick and Nolan both write and direct. Rarely are films complete and utter projects of the directors' visions, but in the case of both of these guys, they are. Tarantino gets a lot of props too, it's just that they don't fit my personal taste. I think they're shallow and stylish. Tarantino can totally ignore the idea of plot and call it 'stylish' when it's really just a concept stretched into a movie.
@brickbusterful I prefer Punch-Drunk Love over Magnolia, but other than that I agree with your list. And though Hard Eight (Sydney) is his weakest, its still a good film and a damn strong directorial debut.
PTA is the young master, getting deep down in the guts of his characters in a way that the bloodless Christopher Nolan or the sterile Tarintino and Fincher could never do.
Paul Thomas Anderson's next picture starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Resse Witherspoon, Jeremy Renner following the formation and creation of a "new religion" in the 1950s by a "charismatic individual" (Hoffman) is confirmed to start shooting next month. Some have speculated the film tentatively entitled "The Master" to be publically released in theatres as early as winter (November/December) of this year! I'm already getting "aroused" just writing this and thinking About Paul's next epic.
My favorite director of all time and debatably the greatest working today. I love all his films, so it hurts to put some at the bottom of a list.
1) There Will Be Blood
2) Boogie Nights
3) Magnolia
4) Punch-Drunk Love
5) Hard 8
I hope that "The Master" tops them all, his movies are all so different! And inventive! He does such fascinating character studies and I'm really looking forward to what he does in the future.
@jakespick sowwy, idk if you want me to spell out eight, or the more likely reason you want me to call it Sydney, cause that's pt anderson's title for it and all. okay!
I went on this countdown of the all time top 100 directors... i wanted to see if PT Anderson was on it cus he's not always admired by the "professionals" though everyone seems to agree that There Will Be Blood is the best film of the decade, so idk why he'd not more well known and respected. he made the list!
he was listed as the 100th best director haha. i really hope he'll be respected more in the future, i hope "The Master" gets him his long overdue oscar!
I absolutely love Paul Thomas Anderson. His cinematographic work is absolutely brilliant, as are his stories and movies in general.
Saying that, I couldn't really get into Magnolia. It was a bit TOO odd for my tastes, which is weird for me to say. I don't know, I'm going to watch it again someday and figure out whether or not it's for me.
This is my favorite video to watch out of them all. It's so well done. If only I didn't have to see Adam Sandler other than that part where he peaks around the corner. Cuz I liked that shot.
just saw punch-drunk love yesterday. Truly underrated film and not your standard romantic comedy, sandlers best. Magnolia is my favorite movie of all time
I feel so sorry for him when he loses his hearing in the middle of "Momentum" here...
of course, in some odd way that led to him being a better person on the inside and out within the context of "There Will Be Blood", and he turned out cool, but still...THAT part gets me every time.
i've recently watched "Boogie Nights" and It was amazing, Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives is best performance ever, also like Mark Walbergh, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore and I just don't say that it was Daniel Day-Lewis best performance because He in " My Left Foot" is better, but anyway PTA is one of hte best director working nowadays and I'm forward for his next movie ( and thank you(barringer82) for making this amazing tribute to this amazing director)
well, i wouldn't go so far as calling i Phillip Seymour Hoffman's best, but i gotta say, he shines in this movie. if i saw this film ten years ago, it's easy to predict that the guy would hit big because he's just a terrific actor even in small roles.(i just saw it for the first time 4 days ago).
Now on DDL, i would say MLF was his third best. his Bill the Butcher is definetly better than his Christy Brown. but the BEST is Plainview. with There Will Be Blood. PTA gave DDLa film he derserve
Marty's direction on Gangs is kind of dissapointing, so i would say My Left Foot is a better film than Gangs. My Left Foot is like he perfect "Hallmark" movie. Gangs of New York is just too flawed. Their Age Of Innocence was better.
Adam Sandler, Philip Baker Hall, Tom Cruise, and Daniel Day-Lewis all gave their best performances in these films in my opinion. Whatever PTA is doing...man, it works.
oh crap you're right! i remember from Boogie Nights the moment at 4:37...Walhberg's expression are incredible, and I think on pta's dvd commentary he even said that Walhberg suggested the long moment of realization himself. Fantastic performance.
It's not that Sydney's bad, it's a great piece of film making. It's just that Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love & There Will Be Blood are all-out masterpieces.
this is even better then hughes,.. i swear to god if i ever teach class about film art in school "the films..." would be at least great deal of it ;) like some said here you got talent boy :)
how the hell is he underrated when he made his first feature at 25, got nominated for oscar twice before turning 30 and has won both Berlin and Cannes film festival before hitting 40? ...I don't think he's overrated though
@Cobainpunk74 Underrated by the studio, overrated by his and Robert Altman fans, not respected enough by the general public, and on his way to being one of the best.
"If you make a good movie, its only 50 % of the work. The other 50 % is negotiating with studio politics" - which can be like explaining to a very rich and spoiled 4 year old why there aren't any lasers in your movie and why the story makes his brain hurt.
Magnolia was kind of strange where you have all these different people coming together in different ways. It seems like that whole 6 degrees of separation thing. I also enjoyed seeing Tom Cruise crying. makes me feel better about scientology when I see Cruise crying uncontrollably.
Hypothetically speaking: If the 2012 Mayan apocalypse does indeed occur, I would see "The Master" in a large movie theater with Paul Thomas Anderson sitting on my left and Martin Scorsese sitting on my right. I would also - as an aspiring filmmaker, love to have written a screenplay as good a "Boogie Nights" or "Taxi Driver" with their approval. I would die a happy man.

he was listed as the 100th best director haha. i really hope he'll be respected more in the future, i hope "The Master" gets him his long overdue oscar!

I like Punch Drunk Love second best actually, only behind Magnolia. I read his new scientology draft, it should be great!

BRILLIANT! I love PTA!!!! 5 Films. 5 Masterpieces.
RICH020669 1 year ago 2
I know a lot of people say Boogie Nights and Magnolia is PTA's masterpiece, but for me its THERE WILL BE BLOOD!!!!!
I love all of his films and I'm looking forward towards his new "scientology" film!

Poor H.W.....
I feel so sorry for him when he loses his hearing in the middle of "Momentum" here...
of course, in some odd way that led to him being a better person on the inside and out within the context of "There Will Be Blood", and he turned out cool, but still...THAT part gets me every time.

It's got sound again. Sweet.

I love PTA movies. There will be Blood is my favorite, even though it's a bit different from his previous works.

i've recently watched "Boogie Nights" and It was amazing, Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives is best performance ever, also like Mark Walbergh, Adam Sandler, Tom Cruise, John C. Reilly, Julianne Moore and I just don't say that it was Daniel Day-Lewis best performance because He in " My Left Foot" is better, but anyway PTA is one of hte best director working nowadays and I'm forward for his next movie ( and thank you(barringer82) for making this amazing tribute to this amazing director)
theguywhowatchmovies 2 years ago 2
well, i wouldn't go so far as calling i Phillip Seymour Hoffman's best, but i gotta say, he shines in this movie. if i saw this film ten years ago, it's easy to predict that the guy would hit big because he's just a terrific actor even in small roles.(i just saw it for the first time 4 days ago).
Now on DDL, i would say MLF was his third best. his Bill the Butcher is definetly better than his Christy Brown. but the BEST is Plainview. with There Will Be Blood. PTA gave DDLa film he derserve
godfatherofwiseguys 2 years ago
@godfatherofwiseguys I agree completely, both about DDL and Hoffman. For me, Hoffmans Plainview was Capote
wallace7jefferson 2 years ago
Marty's direction on Gangs is kind of dissapointing, so i would say My Left Foot is a better film than Gangs. My Left Foot is like he perfect "Hallmark" movie. Gangs of New York is just too flawed. Their Age Of Innocence was better.

Adam Sandler, Philip Baker Hall, Tom Cruise, and Daniel Day-Lewis all gave their best performances in these films in my opinion. Whatever PTA is doing...man, it works.
PTFAbedeh 2 years ago 4
you forgot Mark Walhberg.
johnnycitystar 2 years ago
oh crap you're right! i remember from Boogie Nights the moment at 4:37...Walhberg's expression are incredible, and I think on pta's dvd commentary he even said that Walhberg suggested the long moment of realization himself. Fantastic performance.

don't forget Mark Walberg!

ive never been able to get over how hilarious 2:00 is when it goes "You're a winner!" and shows the shot of Donnie from Magnolia.

why is Sydney at the bottom of everyone's list. underrated
youthuprising101 2 years ago
I agree. I also thik that Magnolia is way overrated and not nearly as good as either Boogie Nights or There Will Be Blood.
jimmyhooha 2 years ago
Well in my opinion, It's because It's Very slow pace, takes a while for the film to get to the point.
johnnycitystar 2 years ago
It's not that Sydney's bad, it's a great piece of film making. It's just that Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love & There Will Be Blood are all-out masterpieces.

@Cobainpunk74
how the hell is he underrated when he made his first feature at 25, got nominated for oscar twice before turning 30 and has won both Berlin and Cannes film festival before hitting 40? ...I don't think he's overrated though
j0lteon 1 year ago
@Cobainpunk74 Underrated by the studio, overrated by his and Robert Altman fans, not respected enough by the general public, and on his way to being one of the best.
"If you make a good movie, its only 50 % of the work. The other 50 % is negotiating with studio politics" - which can be like explaining to a very rich and spoiled 4 year old why there aren't any lasers in your movie and why the story makes his brain hurt.
BaremyiahZ 1 year ago
Magnolia was kind of strange where you have all these different people coming together in different ways. It seems like that whole 6 degrees of separation thing. I also enjoyed seeing Tom Cruise crying. makes me feel better about scientology when I see Cruise crying uncontrollably.
