China has repeatedly admitted about a few fakes, but that is because they wanted everything to be absolutely perfect, they needed a world stage to demonstrate the changes they have made, and the Olympics were it.

No one's saying the fireworks were faked, or the footprints, but what was broadcast was partially faked and that's considered a violation of journalistic ethics. The term used is "flipping a pyramid" referring to a famous magazine that slightly altered a photo of the Egyptian pyramids in order to create a more attractive cover shot. It harmed no one, but it was still unethical. A live, historic event should not have "artificial" elements in its coverage.
