Universal or whoever owns the rights to this song are arseholes, even removing fucking tabs off the internet. WTF? They're denying little kids the chance to learn stairway to heaven even tough there is no way learning to play the song can have any kind of impact on their profits.
The had to change the notes do to copy-write infringement sk that's why it does not sound like stairway to heaven. And it's a joke because when that song came out people played it to much in stores so the workers got sick of it
@EVODproductions Taurus was the name of the song, and just because they didnt care dosent make it any less of a blatant ripoff. Think about it, one of the most iconic(overrated) songs ever was someone elses intellectual property.
@Cream234 It isnt someone elses intellectual property. Zeppelin wrote the lyrics and they did not just copy the whole entire song. The two songs differ greatly. It is known for its similarities but not for being an exact copy. In my opinion the song is in no way overrated but I guess that is all based on opinion. Spirit (not Taurus, my mistake) does not consider it to be a blatant ripoff.
@EVODproductions My point is that the most recognizible riff of the song was riped off. Led Zeppelin just threw in some ridiculous, non-sensical lyrics and put in a solo for good measure. And yes, this song is overplayed, overrated. I guess im just missing something here.
@Cream234 Like I said, the overplayed/overrated thing is a matter of opinion. The lyrics tell a story if you look into them; about a woman who accumulates a great amount of money but cares too much for material things and realizes that she cannot buy her way into heaven. The lyrics are very sensible. This also goes to show that Zeppelin could play anything they wanted because they are the greatest band in history.
“So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o’clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn’t go on stage that night.
Wayne, breaking 3rd wall and grinning into the camera, plays the first 5 notes of Stairway to Heaven, slowly, nodding his head with each pluck. The music store employee interrupts Wayne and says "there's a sign on the wall." Wayne laughs and nods, THEN the music store guy points out the sign saying "No Stairway to Heaven"
@manoftomorrow79 well its like this....everyone go and try the guitar playing that tune :P so the owner cant stand it anymore...this is due to the fact that staiway to heaven have shit load of time played in the radio and in generall(and it worth it :P )
@manoftomorrow79 It's common knowledge among guitar players like myself that the very first thing you should do when examining a guitar in which you hold some interest is to play "Stairway to Heaven," as the quintessential rock tune's tonalities slightest wavering shall be made clear and the instrument deemed unsuited to further experimentation. So says the unwritten law of the music store.
To me the fact that Stairway was cut out of this and replaced with another riff is an example of greed in the music industry. This scene had him play about 4 notes from the song. Stairway had been around for about 20 years when this came out I would say that they had already made significant money from it. Without this riff being played the joke loses its point. Whoever own the rights to this song is an asshole for not allowing 4 notes from it in one scene
My old guitar teacher told me once that he saw it in theaters when it first cam out, and that Wayne actually played the opening lick. When it came out on video, however, they had to change it for copyright reasons.
The "Stairway to Heaven" guitar riff was changed for the international, cable, and videotape releases to a generic riff because of disputes in obtaining rights to the first five notes of the song, which appear only in the US theatrical release.
It doesn't even sound like Stairway really :')
