utelover23- keep in mind you broke the BCS with an EXCELLENT Coach (Urban Meyer) that USED you guys to get a better paying job. If you had Kyle Whittingham in that Alex smith season, i'm pretty sure they wouldnt have broke the BCS. The utes only broke the BCS because of Urban. BYU just picked up 2 star players. Ryan Nelson(QB) and Malosi Te'o(RB). Just look at their highlight reels. they are amazing. Both are on missions.

Great team coming back. It's just too bad that the best they can hope for is a lower BCS bowl bid (if they luck out and go undefeated). Unga is a great all-around back, but sadly BYU will probably be his biggest stage. The NFL is a joke about running backs.

Why does Unga need 3 more years to be ready for the NFL? The kid will be ready after next year, if he remains injury free. Typical BYU fan though, they think their best players need to use all of their eligibility before making the jump to the NFL.

Luke Staley anyone? Is Unga going to win the Doak Walker award? I know he's good, but he's no Staley. And all it took for them to dismiss Staley was an injury. He was drafted 7th round no less. Contrast that with slow overweight Maurice Clarett, with one year of college play, getting a 4th round pick even after many scandals and reports of various crimes.

Then you have Adrian Peterson that is injured every other day at Oklahoma, yet still becomes a "stud" RB for the Vikings.

I think it's a combination of both school prestige and racial profiling. Only blacks are seen as good feature RBs, and BYU is a "mid-major", the former prejudice being stronger, yet a heavily-ignored reality. It effectively eliminates any chance for BYU White and Polynesian backs to compete. But keep the hope, maybe I'll be wrong.

Chris Fu'amatuma'afala tore it up as a Utah RB, yet was relegated to backup FB in the pros. He could have easily been a Bus-type back. Also see Lakei Heimuli.

Lakei had 34 carries for 128 for a 3.8 average in the NFL Chicago Bears, yet like Staley, only lasted a season. At least he got to play.

I don't think it's a mystery why BYU has never been a big producer of pro feature backs, while it has had many linemen, linebackers, tight ends and quarterbacks become stars. Our backs have been very good, yet not up to NFL "requirements" in other areas.

(BTW, Mahe is a returner if he's still playing. He wouldn't be on a roster if he was just an RB).

Some of our backs that meet the unwritten, unspoken race requirement, like Jenkins, Brown, and Willis, were either deemed too slow (Brown), too small (Jenkins), or too tall (Willis). These are probably the same reasons they wound up at BYU and not a Pac-10 school.
