  • I think I found the first flaw in the dialogue at 6:05 "Authentication A-dash" in real life he would have said "Alpha"

sry Ayz, it took me 3 years but I found one! lol

  • canon HV20? Not bad...not bad...I shoot with the RED Epic and I like to see you people doing some good shit with a tiny lille cam. editing is also very good. let me guess...didi you use "magic Bullet" on post? the only thing i don't like about it is that these softwares is so hard on the CONTRAST that removes the correct gamma so everything that is dark, goes straight to black and you loose all the detail...

  • amazing!.. what camera you using?

  • if the camera holds Mini-DV videotape cassettes then how do you get it to your computer

  • @askskater firewire

  • @askskater You kidding right?

  • i was getting into this film i wish it was more it was good

  • did you use any special kind of lens? I am dying to have this look for a short film.

  • wondering if you added any filters in the production...

  • I saw a student film that won awards that was shit compared to this. I can tell time went in to corrections and that some directing was involved in the performances.

  • very good film man im working on one i have a hv 2o beachteck azden sgmx 1 sony vegas 10 raynox 660 wide angel lens wish we luck man great film again man

  • really not bad at all

  • did u use 35mm adaptor? or its just the camera?

  • quality edit and lighting... very effective use of digital zoom and filtering (optical and post)

    I view at 360p...

  • hit me back please i need to find a good mic.

  • great movie i watch it about a million times.good is good. i just want to now.what kind of microphone did you use.

  • The actors made it worthwhile. Without them, the awesome cinematography and editing would have been lost. Good acting.

  • is the hv20 supposed to be better than the hv40? and also, would you consider the canon t2i better quality for filming?

  • @bootsluzer Get what you can afford man. And no, the hv20 and hv40 have the exact same image quality. Of course the hv40 has native 24p and a couple tweaks to its design but it's more or less the same. If you have enough money for the t2i then go for it. But keep in mind that you'll be spending a lot more on accessories to make the t2i function like a video camera on. The Hvxx camera's are great tho, and if you go that route don't have any regrets, just make it work.

  • @theryaner thanks for responding. what made me ask about the 20 and 40 is that ive been seeing that the 40 is cheaper than the 20, which i found odd.

  • @bootsluzer oh haha, i think it's because they stopped producing the hv20 so its kinda "rare" i guess.

  • all thst sucks he died at #7:11 but nice move

  • omg great cinematography!

  • Great cinematography, I'm amazed you did this on the HV30. Great short Story man! Hopefully you come out with more great stories. I'm just starting making shorts, I'm also starting with the Hv30 and move up from there.

  • Did you use a film adapter for this shot? also what did you use to record the dialog?

  • what video software did you use? I love the short film!

  • well done. that's some awesome film making.

  • Go to ebay and type Canon VIXIA HV20 no wear or tear. Great value with Rode Mic.

The auction ends in less than 24hrs.

  • Wow, I like this...I think you might have convinced me to get a Canon HV20 instead of a Sanyo XACTI fh1a.

The acting and dialogue is pretty good. I feel as if I'd watch this if it were feature length

  • Wow! Nice job. I love how the color of their sweat shirts symbolized the color they would see. Also, the beginning is a great attention grabber.

  • great camera work and very good sound.

    I have only one question:

This short seems VERY good here on youtube but how good does it look when projected ? Is the camera's resolution good enough for projection ?

How big can this be displayed without loosing much quality ?

Hope I make myself understood since I am new to this.

  • Although the photography, sound and editing were great, its all for not with out great acting...Your actors made this awesome. Good work

  • WOW! I just got my 40 and did a quick vid but NOTHING LIKE THIS! Super job!

  • that's sick

  • Did this get printed on a 35mm reel? I would assume for sundance?

  • does this save on tapes or on drives?

  • did you use an adapter with this at all? i don't think you did, but im curious

  • Can you share with us the settings on your Hv20 to get this type of shot?

  • Looks amazing! its a wonder what you can do with a small camera and some talent!

  • omg amazing cant belive that was the hv20! I am going out and buying one right now!

  • hey great film im truly inspired by this film did you use a 35mm dop adapter and what liting did u.also i would love and be honored to act in one of your next films any room for a somebody thats nobody

  • @tshkwmt Tapes are much cheaper and offer more data capacity for your money. More than Flash memory. The only disadvantage is that if you're copying the Videos to your PC it has to be done in realtime. But these Tapes are very good for archiving since they are very durable and solid. One more thing. You should allways stick with one brand. I prefer the standard (orange) Sony Premium DV tapes. No need to pay for expensive HDV tapes. Standard tapes are working perfectly.

  • wow! i love how you tied the white couch and red lamp in when Tully was dying, great video, guys!

  • 2 questions sir:

    1) did you use a mac or pc

    2) what editing software did you use

  • Great job!

What kind of editing software did you use?

  • This Is Excellent ! Bravo ! Great Short-Film ! Great Acting ! Damn I need an HV20 (or two :D) I have a few questions :

Did you used a 35mm adapter ?? What Mic did you used with the HV20 ? Which Software for the footage ? Have you changed the colors, contrast..with a software ??

Do you think the HV20 is enough "powerful" to be kinescoped ?

    Thank you so much :)

And again : This is an excellent short ! I totally adore it ! Keep up the good work !

    Damien.

  • just curious, what was the $700 spent on?

  • Did you film this in 24p and did you do a pull down? I know the HV40 recorders in true 24p.

  • great acting. what mic was used?

  • GREAT GUY!

  • Dude i have 2 of this camera i love them! look at this freaking image so smooth

  • this was amazing to watch

  • What lenses and editing programs did you use?

  • This is really inspiring stuff.

  • wow great cinematography!

  • Great performance . Great short film. May I ask what kind of mic or sound equipment you used?

  • what do you edit with and how did you get such good quality?

  • good work.

  • do you prefer using a miniDV HD tape or a Class 5 SD Memory Card?

  • Awesome! Definitely one of the best short films on You Tube. What mic did you use to get such clear audio?

  • I love this short

How did you get the audio so crisp for the conversation?

did you use a shotgun mic?

  • all is great ! which effect did you use to create the film feel? txs

  • @ssnake064 see, i think its the violence in our minds and lives that is the violence that's reflected in films.

  • @Dimeworth Totally right.

  • @Dimeworth See we are born peaceful beings.. but as we grow up we are influenced by those around us.. when threatened we can be come violent.. our fascination with violence in films can if we are not careful become a self full filling prophesy... Nice photography and story telling skills

  • @ssnake064 Violence is a human nature.

  • @ssnake064 You should watch the Michael Moore documentary dude, "Bowling For Columbine" Movie are not at all the cause of violence in our lives or minds !

And dude, violence was here thousand years ago before movies ! But yeah, you should watch Bowling for Columbine. Everybody should watch it

  • amazing im getting this camera. that was brilliant!

  • This has a good look to it.

  • when the guy runs in the begining, it's filmed from a car, right?

  • @Julien1843 right. back of an SUV

  • @Dimeworth how did u get it so u dont hear the suv?

  • Hahaha bravo man and well done.

  • ayz, you are a very inspirational director.

ever since i watched your film, i decided one thing... filmmaking is not all about money, but the techniques. i created a short film for my local film fest here.

please have a look if you are interested.

    thanks a lot!!

  • You "decided" that? Come on man. You're the reason studios are willing to spend $250 million on a big budget flick when all audiences really want is a good story and something they can be emotionally affected by. Wake up. Oh yeah, you already "decided" to.

  • whoa chill man.

sorry i used the wrong word. i mean, like i know for a fact... if u know what i mean.

check my video Misconceptions short film, and ull understand that im not "deciding" that. i know a lot more than u think ma friend. and im certainly not affected by budget. im the reason they want to make a 250 million dollar film? man that was really uncalled for. i used the wrong word and im sorry for that.. so... think before you say something. its like a headless chicken trying to speak...

  • WERY WELL DONE!!! GREAT WORK!!!

  • This was terrific. Great performances, great editing. 10/10.

  • How much are HV 20s?

  • abou 4 or 500 now on amazon. I got the hv30

  • This was really beautiful. I really enjoyed it. The HV 20 is a wonderful little beastie! I'll be getting mine in just a couple of weeks. BUT- It's really about the talent, sensitivity and skill of the photog/shooter/storyteller that matters. Waraich has great skill! Thanks for this fine piece-

    TLH

  • Get a Rebel T2i instead. Same price (if not cheaper), option to change lenses (w/ no adapter and MUCH cheaper) is the selling point for me, and a MUCH MUCH cleaner, less compressed image.

  • i really like this, :) lovely.

  • I think your fantastic. Perfect emotion and continuity through out.

  • wow. I finally got the hv30, and let me tell you. It is amazing. I love the results of it that I've uploaded to youtube. especially in 24p.

  • Im planning to buy the Cannon HV40 Vixia. cuz I wanna start learning about film and things like that xD... Is this a good camcorder for a beginner cuz Im just 16.

  • i just recently bought one and love it

it is probably the best camcorder (not camera) on the market

but make sure you have a fast enough computer to handle the HD

i had to buy a brand new desktop to handle it

    ahaha

  • o.O! What are the requirements for a good desktop or laptop? I'll be editing :D

  • i'll send you a message

  • Yes! A great beginner camcorder in my opinion. It has some manual functions (not hard to find and adjust), and you don't need a lot of know-how to create a crisp image. I, personally WOULD recommend it.

  • I love this movie.. I have watched it 3 times in the last hour and just made my brother watch it on Vimeo.. listened to your podcast interview as well.

I am simply blown away by the cinematography and score.. perfect. I would want to see the feature length version of this film!

BTW, I only found this video because I happened to be researching the Canon HV40 to buy.. haha!

  • @agent5233 same here, my mind has been changed. to be honest, some of the shots you did, like the guy opening the door and shutting it in the dark, all the dolly shots, reminds me a lot of Christopher nolan cinematography lol. very breath taking!

  • @agent5233 thanks for the support mate!

  • great cinematography! Very good I really enjoyed it!

  • Wow this was really well done. I have a HF11 and would love to make my shorts look like this. Do you have any advice?

  • woah im thinking of getting this camera im only 16 but i really want to make my own stuff.... but it seems complicated. I know its not just a case of buying a camera.

  • did you use a 35mm adapter? amazing work!!

  • LOL doesnt matter 6 months or not ive kept the same wardobe from scene to scene no matter how short or long of a film. they make this short trying to be serious but not serious attention to detail your right common troll mistake - the actor or director just a amature

  • He means 6 months as in time transpired in the actual movie. Idiot.

  • OK WOW did anyone notice the first shot his hoodie is red and then in the first talking scene its YELLOW, wow NOOB mistake

  • @caz78

do noobs's often make the mistake of accidentally using the wrong color of clothing from scene to scene? I didn't realize this was a thing.

Either way, the two scenes are 6 months apart, but it's okay -- Common TROLL mistake.

  • this is amazing , can you please tell me what format did u save it as ? 1280 by 720 ?

  • hey i have a question.

did u shoot it in 60i and then convert it to 24p?

or did u use the 24p feature on the hv20?

just asking because i have hf200, and it seems like when i use 60i to shoot and convert it to 24p in sony vegas, it has a smoother, 24p look.

i dont have the money to move up to hv20, so just trying to get the best out of my camera.

    any suggestions/tips/advice from you.

you have an EXCELLENT filmmaking technique. i like it.

    really inspirational.

  • I have a question that I think has not been answered before... I believe you mentioned somewhere that you used a rode videomic. Well, the rode videomic is a mono microphone, I was wondering if you would recommend this over a stereo mic (like Rode SVM) for stuff like this. I mean, to get more of ambience sound, perhaps... I don't know what's your opinion on this, but would be helpful to know. thanks if you take the time for answering!

  • @ognistik i think using mono's is pretty standard practice? I'm really not sure though... good luck!

  • @ognistik pros generally don't use stereo mics on talent. usually you want a directional mic (shotgun) as close as possible to the actors mouth. A stereo mic would only give you more ambient noise. If you have two people you can put a mic on each actor. Even if one actor is off-screen, you still put a mic on them both and it gives you a lot more choices during editing.

When you get your ambient sound, though, you can us a stereo mic if you want (or two mics).

    @Dimeworth - awesome movie!

  • @curiousthree

I plan on getting an Azden SMX-10 DIRECTIONAL stereo mic. I know you say stereo isn't good for dialogue. So what I'm gonna do is combine the left and right channels to make mono out of the stereo.

Then I'll leave it on stereo when I record ambient sounds.

How would that work? On a boom pole I bet the Smx-10 could isolate dialogue pretty well.

  • @sonicballer8888 honestly it'll probably sound great - definitely way better than a camera mike. get as close to the actor's mouth as you possibly can and try to eliminate any background noise while recording (turn off fans, etc)

the real key is to just get out there and shoot!

  • This was shot with the hv20 "NO LEN ADAPTER WAS USED" ... If you guys actually shot for a living u would have noticed there isn't any shallow depth of field shots anywhere in this film... what makes this film look so good is..(1)the hv20 produces a great images...(2)COLOR GRADING..the editor on this film used Magic Bullet Looks.1.0

  • @videografproductions Shit I would have never known. When should someone use wide angles in their films?

  • @videografproductions "the editor on this film used magic bullet looks 1.0"

What is your reference for this? Because as the editor on this I have to let you know you're wrong. This was color-corrected by hand in Sony Vegas.

what makes the film good is composition, lighting, understanding cinematography, and shooting tests for the grading process.

appreciate the enthusiasm, but don't want people to get the wrong idea here.

  • what micro did you use?

    it sounds pretty good.

Im shooting a short film but dont know what micro would be good.

    any recomendations?

  • Gorgeous. As. Fuck.

How in God's name do you make HV20 footage look like this.

What adapter are you using and how do you tweek the settings to look like this.

    I am enthralled.

    ~B

  • Me too! this is amazing. how the hell do you get it like that!

  • @Brynn17 grazi. standard canon wide angle adaptor, and some really heavy custom grading in sony vegas.

also shoot all your 24p stuff with 1/60th shutter. it's sharper and more filmlike motion.

  • how much does a canon wide angle adaptor cost?

and what is the advantage of that?

can you still get a look like how u shot it without the adapter?

  • @SuperAndrenaline not sure, google it.

But yes, you can. The adaptor is not a key ingredient at all. Some of this was shot without the adaptor too.

  • Your film looks great. Did you use a DoF adaptor?

  • my compliments!

  • dude i just don't see how you shot this with just an HV20, what where the settings on the camera when you shot it?

  • I own a hv20 and I got it when it first came out. Strange thing in my opinion is that some footage I take looks beautiful, other footage looks just like any cheap junk camera ... even though everything I shoot is pretty much lit the same. My footage looks like crap uploaded, but on tv it looks way better (and I've tried uploading it several different ways). I guess it doesn't depend on the format, but the cameraman

  • some really good talent...

what microphone did u use? like what model?

  • you expect me to sit here and believe you while you feed me a line about you shooting this on the HV20? How much editing did you do?

  • @joshjcarlson haha i don't expect anything from you. you believe whatever makes you feel better. ;)

  • truth be told, no offense intended. I believe it...good writing, good acting, good camera work(I own an HV20 so I suppose it's partially sour grapes) I just have

to wonder what you edited this on. That's all. hey awesome job man.

  • so wait that was only shot with the canon HV40, sweet man what kind of lens?

  • shot on the HV20 not the HV40

  • ugh... selling an xbox 360 and a ps3 to buy an HV20 today... sad and happy lol

  • worth it.

  • for the longest time i thought this was shot on a red camera..thank god it wasnt there is hope i can afford a cheaper camera and accomplish something like this with hard work :D

  • really good actig, really good script

  • amazing quality...good acting....this is a good short film guys!

  • My god, i thought this was amazing 3 weeks ago. Until i saw what the Red One could do. Ignorance is really bliss

  • well, if you're an indepentend fimmaker you probably can't afford a Red One. Shooting with an HV20 is in fact more amazing, because it takes an artistic vision to make it look like this. The red one is just a step higher.

  • Now compare the prices.

  • It IS really amazing...don't think that just because you get a hold of a Red that you can shoot anything as good as this. It takes training and talent to do this.

  • I wasn't bashing the production, actors, or quality of the film. I was just speaking about the quality of the visuals. I have a hv20 as well, so i know the work that goes into something like this.

  • Oh.

  • Man!!! I would have never knew it was a one man crew by watching it from youtube land. Thanks!!!

  • could anyone with editing skills answer this for me? lets say that the director filmed this with one camera, would the actors have to keep repeating their lines when the camera is cutting back and forward from actor (a) to actor (b) but actor (a) is the only one doing the talking?

  • yes, or else record the dialogue first and, take three or four shots from your desired angle. and then edit it in the post, but yes actor has to perform it again and again for camera cuts

  • You can merge audio tracks, so you wouldnt have to get the actors to repeat their scripts.

  • aspect ratios, the cameras and the type of film stock who chooses all that, the director or the DP?

  • Lolwut? Aspect ratios have nothing to do with audio tracks, the editor does this.. It's not that hard.. You can do it easily on sony vegas or adobe premiere.

  • Comment removed

  • depends on how u want to do it. I did a few different takes on my stuff

  • yeah nice sound. and nice work as a whole. Thumbs up!

  • wow..the story is brilliant it makes me wonder. And the video quality is amazing along with the audio. What kind of microphone do you use?

  • absolutely amazing. did u use any glidecam or shoulder mount ?

  • amazing,... what lens did you used?

  • Absolutely amazing. I'm a fan already. One day i'll put out a video aswel and send you the link.. hehe.. I bought HV20 aswel but never got time to make a short or long out of it. I've mostly used it for home videos so far...

  • this is amazingly shot. But the acting could be better, harder, sharper....

And some scene editing could be faster. In the beginning the man at the left was in the dark most of the time which makes it hard to focus on the sound.

  • Dude by far the best camera movements I've ever got to see in a long as time. Great fuckin job dude! =D

  • excellent job guys. favorited. beautiul cc, nice cinematography, emblazing music.

    congrats.

  • Great acting from both guys, excellent camera moves and very nice music score. GREAT JOB!!!!

  • Tarintino ain't got shit on you.

  • wow really nice video

  • The Cinematography was impressive,i loved the directing, but the dialogue was stupid and the story of it wasnt done to well eiither

  • filmed well but kinda dumb...

  • That was phenomenal. Great editing, music and the whole thing is just visually stunning. 11/10. Great job.

  • omg

    niiice job.

  • FUCK !!!!! IM SO JEALOUS!!!!!

  • Remarkable, some audio problems but that was a piece of work. Did you shoot using the mic on the HV20?

  • they used an external mic on a boom pole

  • interesting frame aspect--did you letterbox?

What kind of lens was used?

  • stock lens + WD-H43 Wide angle lens

  • Incredible. This has to be one of the best short films I have ever seen, and that really is saying something. Awesome!

  • amazing wow

  • extremely well done. and with a budget of only about $700, this cinematography is just amazing. you are a huge inspiration to me and with this short film, you have marked my brain forever (IN A GREAT WAY)! this is now my favorite short film of all time.

  • awsome. its not the camera. its whos using the camera. cant belive this was shot with hv20.

like real movie. you need to do some tutorial. il pay you 100 bucks. give me some secret lesson.

all i wanna know is picture quality like movie.

  • what mic r u using?

  • Rode NT2 shotgun mic

  • Thanks, I dont think it was so much the mic being used as the audio production itself, talents were a bit low in the first scene, and the last line had a noticeable in and out because of the hum. I like the general use of audio though, some good folly in there.

  • You're truly an inspiration man... Thank you for such a wonderful film, and also justifying my purchase of an hv30. This truly represents my belief, that the equipment does not make the film.

  • Not just your belief. It's fact.

  • Wow. If I was an audience of a couple of a thousand people... You'd be receiving the biggest round of applause you've ever heard, right now.

    Very inspiring.

  • this would have made a better feature film rather than a short i think.

    compelling work tho
