HAIL TURISAS, FUCKIN BEYOND EPIC, UNBEATABLE COVER. I listened to the original as a child, and now One of Finland's BEST Folk/Metal bands does this cover? No words can express how amazing this is.. 5 stars. Heil Vikings
An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody from the song
"Dorogoy dlinnoyu" ("By a long road" or "along a long road") which was written by Boris Fomin (1900-1948)
with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii - both of them Russian.
This is a cover of a cover of a really old russian song. I was listening to this in my headphones real loud and my mom started singing along the old russian version (my mom's russian) xD
Mary Hopkin's did a version of it before Turisas, but i've got a feeling it isn't hers either, possibly an old folk song or something? I'm not entirely sure.
@Bluuk
But who made this first ?

It's actually a Mary Hopkin cover, so if it sounds like anything, it's that. :P

Cool, but watch the brazilian 80's show that used this melody as opening. Search for "Show de Calouros Abertura".

Another proof that any melody that has rhythm can be made much better when played in Heavy Metal style.
This is a very old song. And there's a Russian version that's like a 100+ years old. Don't feel like researching atm.
