i do agree with you eric. i personally believe that learning a quick, simple, magic trick, can stir the interest of potential ppl who may want to take magic to a further career. i started learning how to shuffle cards, and with tags, it lead to some basic card trick tutorials on youtube. i am not happy of those ppl who, without any practice or respect, just blatantly reveal prized magic effects on youtube. if, like you said, they reveal for the sake of sharing like you do, that should be fine :D

Hey Eric, by now you should know that I am a magician too. There is nothing wrong with the way you make your tutorials because you actually teach a general audience a trick they can perform. What is wrong with other "tutorials" is that they take another magician's hard work and just expose it, without having the intention of really teaching it to anybody. Anyway, check out my suggestions for your background in your previous video. I think you'll find it interesting. ;)

Knowing how an illusion is done and having it performed for you is two very different things. You could be the crappiest magician EVER with only 5 tricks up your sleeve, but your PERFORMANCE ABILITY is what will carry you if you and "spice" up a classic to entertain people with. So exposing things (to me) isn't too bad. Exposing them because your performance sucks...well... different story :)

If you put a big green screen in the back ground, you could pretty much change it to anything and people will think you went all out to do their ideas, it'll be our little secret ;) you can also change it to you logo, white background, video, anything you can imagine with the magic of a green screen and editing :)

Look at the masked magician. I think most of his tricks wouldn't work if he did not reveal them, because everything else than the secret is so poor in that show (no comedy, poor music and coreography, no scary things, etc.)

Anyone can buy books and dvds, gimmicks and anyone can take the time to figure out the secrets, it's not that imprtant. Good magic is entertaining regardless of knowing the exact secret or not. We all know there's a secret, I don't think knowing it can destroy the value of a good performance. I guess those youtube wannabes can't harm the living of pros, they just piss everybody off when they reveal tricks badly.

I like the way you teach tricks. I mean every professional magicians add their own style to the trick and for me that is what's important, that's the real art. You take it one step further by doing the same with tutorials as well. As a non-magician, I cannot see revealing tricks harmul. I know secrets of many tricks and I can still enjoy them when performed by a pro. For me a good performance is not a bare trick, something has to be added: comedy, music and dance, whatever.

I agree with you about the tutorial. That is a nice beginners trick that will hopefully inspire one of your non magician audience members to start doing magic. Also, as my posting, there are only 131 views. I don't see how that is harming the broader magic community. Great video and tutorial...I too am a bit conflicted by online tutorials on Youtube...I think that they can be beneficial to the art, in that it can inspire people to start to learn...like yours! However, issue is, aside from usually being done very badly (and oft times incorrectly), they are exposing an effect that is out in the marketplace, thus hurting the livelihood of our brothers and sisters in the art....wow, I will get off my soapbox now. Wow, did I use oft in a sentence? Great job!

I think teaching magic is fine, but not revealing. as long as the trick is not what professional magicians earn their living, I think its perfectly fine to teach them =] maybe by learning a few tricks it will inspire some people to become a magician :P
