The third chair exercise gets extremely confusing when making components is introduced. I will read below for more potential help, but I have wasted much time trying to fugure that out. Please redo that portion of the tutorial. It is not helpful for beginners.
Using the comments here I was able to get the chair back spindles to duplicate (copy) however I wasn't happy about how it followed the backside of the seat. I created a circle based on the arch of the chair seat and then used that circle for the alignment of the rotate tool instead of the chair seat as in the video.

This tutorial was great until I came upto this point, Im having a negative experience now with the lack of hot keys, awful frustrating trying to figure this out, redo the video please, thanks
the instructions for the third chair are impossible to follow as the functions are not explained, there are shortcuts being used (e.g. copy) some double clicks or something that as a beginner I did not understand, please re-do this video as it is too advanced for the third chair, this is not basics if we can't follow it
I failed on creating a component :( Rectangle is not selected after creating. So I select it by myself and create component. But component is not able to be push/pull :(
@ToruOgiwara you couldn't push/pull the component bc it was a component. you first need to right-click it, select edit component, and then you can push/pull it.
@jras95 copy the original object and move it where you want it to be at, then type a number with x in front. 5x or 20x and etc. forward slash also works if you want arrays between the original object and copied object. /5 or /20 and etc.
I am liking this prog but I think these tuts are for previous versions. At 5:57, she says you can make a component from the square made for the leg but I have no option for that when I right click. Neither is my box yellow. I know the last tut is only a teaser but if she is showing a tut for something that you can no longer do, then all tuts either need to be updated or have something to show the differences. Once these little niggles are sorted, this is a superb prog.
There is an iPad app that lets you view sketchup models. Runs really fast and has measurements and solid cut planes. It's called iCAD Professional and it has a free demo version, iCAD Free.
Don't make basic tutorials then slip in processes with no explanation of how to do them, assuming by lesson 4 we all know how to make a circular array between two points. I am trying to learn this quickly, as a proficient CAD user, i do not need to spend 30 mins trying to work out a process just to finish the tutorial. Thanks to @johnomaz for completing the tutorial!
@bauerm12 not stupid but soon as u acquired a couple of technique, just start up sketch up and made ur model....i acquired mine by playing around rather than watching tutorial
For all of those complaining about her going too fast on the third chair, rewind it back to 5:14 where she says "This final chair we will create is not for you to follow along with. This example should serve as a teaser to encourage you to learn more about SketchUp. And introduce some other ideas for you to look forward to. As you learn more about SketchUp, you will find there are always many ways to work even more quickly and efficiently ...." If you have figured out how to do this one, huzzah!
I have spent hours going over every minute of this video over and over again. It may be a great demo but it is a lousy tutor. And no matter how many times I tried, my Sketchup never acts like hers. Especially when it comes to making the spindles for the back. From then on it was trash.
Good we have clever people her explaining what the woman is doing. Thanks! The four legs came down at the same time. Now it's time to trouble with the sylinders!
Use the select tool to select the cylinder, then click on the rotate tool, click Ctrl and then select the cylinder again. Position the cylinder on the other side of the chair and then type /4 and it will make 4 copies equidistance apart.
Video does not go into Details and Step By Step Instructions ...SO WHAT GOOD IS IT when YOUTUBE GIVES YOU 15 MINUTES, IT IS A WASTE OF SERVER SPACE NO LESS FOLKS TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS HAPPENS TO BE THE WORST TUTORIAL I HAVE EVER WATCHED........................DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
to create the upper chair: build the cylinder then click right "select all connected element" then "make a component" icon. Then the "move" icon to get the cylinder on the side. Then use "rotation" icon. Place it like on the video then keep pressed "CTRL" and move the cylinder to the far left. To create the cylinder in the middle just type "/5" it divides the distance by five and creates as many cylinders. To adjust the hight, double click on one of them (you get the 3 axes) and use push/pull
@sing278 Once you've got the item has the group, move it so you see it from under, then create a rectangle using the top left angle of the "under chair". With the arrow cursor select the rectangle and click the "create a component" icon (normally it's next to the "select" icon). Give a name to it. Once it's done, select the rectangle you just created and click the "move" icon (with the 4 arrows going in different direction). Then press "CTRL" and move the rectangle to the top right corner then
then do the same for the two other rectangle. Once it's done, double click on the first rectangle. You should have the 3 axe like on the video. Then use the "push/pull" icon to get the leg down. The four legs get down at the same time normally.
@NoGravityFX personally what I did was select one part of the chair then roght click and select "all connected elements" (somehting like that sorry mine is in french) then you select "create a group" there you should have the yellow box (for me it's blue I don't know why maybe a different version).
My grouping isn't working in the same way as yours, it isn't letting me make multiple copies where am I going wrong, I am following it step for step, I don't even get the bow around the design?

Guys! Check out the London3Dproject, to see the progress of modeling London, and watch tutorials of how we do it, and how you can get even better at modeling!
I cannot get 2:50 inference to work. I even went back over Pt 3 where she discussed it using planes, but she did not discuss how to do it with push pull. This is really frustrating. :(
@jhan021 Remember that the last chair was only meant as a teaser, to show you what's possible with other tools. They are explained in more detail in the other tutorials.
@jhan021 I finally figuredit out. I looked up how to do arrays on their site and then fussed with it some. When you do your rotate tool, you are holding down the control key (windows) to make a copy of the pillar on the other side. When you place it, type in /4 and it will make three more automatically on the proper curved plain. Was seriously fussing with it for over an hour. Hope that helps.
This tool is the simplest 3d tool I know. If you are having problems just be patient and experiment. Take for instance the 3d tool called blender. Its powerful but you need a doctorate to create 3d images with it. Openoffice draw has 3d but its a pretty weak showing for 3d. Gimp can do 3d looking images but, you will spend far more time trying to produce good looking 3d images. Its certainly easier to use than the powerful and very expensive Microstation. Sketchup is awesome.
i just trid MrEyeka's idea, but still not working, i did make 3 close but its not inside the chair, its out side, can anybody please show us how to do it properly, they do have tutorials but its not say complete ( details on executing that is)

2nd step : click anywhere : we're now gonna see how to do multiple copies : select your cylinder, then change tool and select the rotate tool (the icon is not self-explainatory, by the way), place the angle measuring thingy on the egde of the chair like shown on the video, click and after this while you press ctrl you click and rotate your new cylinder. Once placed at the other side of the chair click and on you keyboard type : 3/ or 4/, depends how many you want
I figrued out how to do what we're all blocking with the 3rd chair back: create your circle, change tool, pull it up, then go on the select tool (press your space bar), double click on your cylinder (this selects the totality of your cylinder), richt click, make a componant, click create.
arfter making the first cilinder and then copying it towards the other end of the chair there is a comand that sais "on the face. After that an equidistant set of cilinders apear along the edge of the chair. What comand is this? how do I make this happen?
Tell us how the heck you copy the chair to the other corner after you make it a component ----------- there is copy command ---and it just moves the chair from one corner to the other. The instructor has conveniently left out the detail of the steps in the video ----------- proper learning and teaching is in the detail ------ get it????????????? Come-on Google ---- get you act together!!!!
@golfheaven if youre on a mac, i have to go to the move option, and press alt while moving it after i clicked on the first component. i can;t do the multi copy thing at all. if anyone knows lemme know
After naming component "chair leg" how do you get that component to copy over to the 'upper left' corner, and then move the two parallel components to the rear?
After naming component "chair leg" how do you get that component to copy over to the 'upper left' corner, and then move the two parallel components to the rear?
lol, this video sucks balls and Google Sketchups Camera angles are too bad. AND GOOGLE SKETCHUP JUST MAKES STUFF WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE IT!!! BOOOOOOOOOO :(
It was pretty easy to do 6:45. All I did was select the circles, press ctrl + c, and then pasted with ctrl + v, for about 4 of them. It's not too hard, guys. Simple computer knowledge :P
This only helps up to the magical appearance of the array for the chair back. I get the individual adding part by manually copying each time from the origin. but she needs to be more descriptive in the shortcut keys she is using I think that will help
Draw first rectangle of first leg and select it with Space (select tool). Then drag a selection rectangle around the drawn rectangle to make all its 4 lines blue. Right click and select Make Component. Make sure to check "replace selection with component". Now you ctrl-c (copy) and ctrl-v (paste) into 4 legs. To push/pull all 4 legs select (space) one of the four copies and right-click select Edit Component. Now press P (push/pull) to do that and all four copies are changed. Im using version 8.
i am having trouble with the upper seat.. make a circle pull it make it a component.. all good... but then - create a quick array using the rotate tool.. and you suddenly have 5 components... ??? cant get through that one :(
Wow, it seems like im not the only one getting lost at the advanced chair. Is she doing a bunch of keyboard commands which she isnt telling us to do? The tutorial isnt made in a way you'll learn stuff..

@golfheaven
Exactly.
She talks talks talks, but doesn't explain what she's actually doing.
I spent 30 mins just to try to copy one post from one corner to the other and still they aren't simetrically placed.
And how the heck did she copy the three other posts in the middle??
Less talking and more explaining please!!

And how the heck did she copy the three other posts in the middle?? They just popped up on screen.
Aren't the videos supposed to be for "New Users" as the title reads??
Less talking and more explaining please!!

After naming component "chair leg" how do you get that component to copy over to the 'upper left' corner, and then move the two parallel components to the rear?

It was pretty easy to do 6:45. All I did was select the circles, press ctrl + c, and then pasted with ctrl + v, for about 4 of them. It's not too hard, guys. Simple computer knowledge :P

acaleph 1 year ago
@acaleph Type "4/" (divide by 4) and press enter after copying. It's called an 'internal' array. An outward one would be "4x" (multiply by 4).

I just noticed that sketchup indicates when you have formed the proportions of the golden section. Uber cool!
Golden sections are proportions considered to be pleasing to the human eye.

This only helps up to the magical appearance of the array for the chair back. I get the individual adding part by manually copying each time from the origin. but she needs to be more descriptive in the shortcut keys she is using I think that will help
SpongebobJm 1 year ago
Draw first rectangle of first leg and select it with Space (select tool). Then drag a selection rectangle around the drawn rectangle to make all its 4 lines blue. Right click and select Make Component. Make sure to check "replace selection with component". Now you ctrl-c (copy) and ctrl-v (paste) into 4 legs. To push/pull all 4 legs select (space) one of the four copies and right-click select Edit Component. Now press P (push/pull) to do that and all four copies are changed. Im using version 8.
