There's the art for duels and the art for battlefields dealing with unknowns from all directions. I believe the large sweeping movements may be for that.
Yeah, Tanaka's art really doesn't look Japanese. Although their technique is very unique... I'm not an expert on Enshin-Ryu, but from what I've observed, they focus more on large sweeping motions that have no control after they are initiated. A lot of power there, but where do you draw the line on too much power/not enough control? I'll leave that to you.
This Ryu is not for me, But hey, it obviously works for some. So it's a success in my eyes.
Actually there is more "control" in large, sweeping motions than in small, choppy ones. Also its good to practice techniques with bigger motions than needed. For the explanation ask you nearest sempai.
