I think it's funny how some people credit this to Chingy, when actually it was SWV who made this an original R&B tune. It contained a sample from Jaco Pastorius, but it was SWV who expanded it into the full score it is known for today.
chingy....Fuc#% all u uncreative Biters...Go 2school and learn how to play like jaco OR anyone in Weather Report and then talk. Funny that u say its funny when its RIPPED off from JACO PASTORIUS WITHOUT GIVING HIS FAMILY A CENT OF MONEY! I call that FUNNY! CHINGY AND THE WRITER OF SWV's RAIN SONG NEED 2GIVE PROPS 2THE ORIGINS...I SAY ORIGINS OF THEIR...cough...gag..."CREATIVITY"! (I miss the good ole days where the majority of music didnt come from sampling/stealing others work) RIP JACO!!!!
@keybobrob: Um, SWV has credited Jaco Pastorius ; it's clearly listed in the "Rain" credits sooo...what exactly are you upset about? In addition, while "Rain" does contain a small sample of Jaco's work, SWV's producer definitely expanded on it and added a large amount of original music to compliment Jaco's track. It contains ELEMENTS of "Portrait Of Tracy" but it's definitely not a 100% "lift" because a lot of what's in "Rain" was never produced by Jaco. So...how is that "uncreative biting"?
yes my friend,I agree w/ u2sum extent. Sum songs R100% lifts.BUT then we have the partial lifts..case&point. Let me ask u, If I excised the most recognizable melodic motif of someone elses' masterpiece&strategicallyTRANSPLANTED it onto my OWN song would it add to the HIT potential of the song?Do U honestly think that this "new song" creative& if u say yes i ask u this: HOW GREAT WOULD IT BE WITHOUT JACO's PART? Is it safe to assume that the entire song was built around JACOs part?YES PERHAPS!
@CDJINT so...yes u r correct that it is not a 100% knock off of Jaco..but again its clear that the most alluring part of the song is surely the portrait of tracy section...that i am sure the songwriter was so inspired by that he wrote a enitre song around that part....the verse ( mainly jaco's) is actually stronger than the hook (not jaco's). Moreover I know the family of Jaco...and they were indeed STIFFED BIG TIME!!..in spite of the credit u see on the CD insert. and MOST importantly
if u have time...read US Magazine.com it will help relate my feelings about the whole sampling thingy and how it has been used in pop music in the past 20+ yrs. Short cuts are a slippery slope my friend! Read about what the great Mr. Quincy Jones has to say about KANYE WES (go to the worldwideweb usmagazinedotcom/moviestvmusic/news/quincy-jones-lashes-out-at-kanye-new-michael-jackson-album-20102211) I think you will get my point if you read all of what he says when he is compared to Kanye.
@keybobrob: I understand your point. But you're talking like this is something new. How many songs from the 60s and 70s were sampled by the likes of Babs Streisand, Elvis, and any number of Motown artists? Sampling is part of our culture and an ode to great musical composition. I think Jaco's fans are upset on "copying principles", but if it weren't for SWV's huge hit, "Portraits" would have been widely overlooked. Millions of people have been exposed to his work now. So in the end, Jaco won.
@CDJIN..Yes, creativity comes in many forms and few would deny that view. I have witnessed remarkably talented folk use the technology of binary-bit based sampling and create beats/songs/grooves that were truly KILLING!! Brilliant work, I once saw a dude here on utube demonstrating his skills with his mpc. Man that dude blew everyone else away in that regard. Part of his BRILLIANCE was his ability to time-stretched &truncated his sample sources BEYOND RECOGNITION and CREATE A MASTERPIECE!
2) then he would take 5 or 10 or 15 snippets from one or two or much more sources and proceed to TIME AND/OR PITCH altered them and them sync them up into some amazingly melodious backed with a thumpin hard hittin back beat that would blow ur mind. My point is that this talented dude would use the technology of bit-based/computer sampling and use it like an INSTRUMENT....creating something totally virtually new and 100% UNRECOGNIZABLE from the original music sources.
I'm more impressed with that sort of use of sampling...one must dig deeper in order to create that kind of art. Yes you are right, millions of people will be more "exposed" to his work...and unfortunatley most of those millions could care less about where it came from. I can't really get into it here...but if u did read what Quincy had to say about Kanye then u will understand that..some people work real hard at pushing the envelope..bending the boundaries WHILE OTHERS just ride on coat tails.
I totally respect&agree w/much of ur thoughts. I personally have witnessed a transition in music of the WORST KIND..and that i would boldly assert that many (not all) of these neo producers/songwriters are not REMOTELY close to the MUSICAL KNOWLEDGE of some of the "older" ones. I used to really get bothered when i heard some new pop rapper talk about how HE JUST FINISHED WRITING A NEW TRACK..BUT ALL THIS NEW SONG WAS TURNED OUT TO BE WAS JUST A RIP-OFF SAMPLE OF SOMEONE ELSES WORK.
btw..explain your usage of the term "sampling" when you referenced Elvis, Streisand, Motown...etc as examples of people who have "sampled". I as you already know was refering to ELECTRONIC SAMPLING ie, (digital reconstruction of analog sound data) I think when you use the term sampling in the regard you did...its clearly different because the technology was not created yet. So it seems clear that you mean re-creating tracks from previous works. Which is also a cop-out. NORMAL doesnt equal GOOD.
its NORMAL 2eat Mcdonalds here..but that shit is slow acting poison!!! Just because sampling is or has been (as u put it) a " part of our culture" doesnt mean that its a good thing. And in my humble opinion, its not an ode 2great musical composition...ur description of it is an EUPHEMISM...but in fact sampling is stealing others creativity...whether you used an instrument(s) to recreate the music or whether u use a MPC or other sampling software! Its stealling.thats why the copyright laws exist.
That's a Yamaha Motif ES 8. It can go for anywhere between 760-1,500 - 2,500 USD. It depends on use, and condition. New would obviously be more, though the XS8 has since replaced this model in stores.
A Korg Triton Extreme or (newer) Korg M3 would suit you much better, as the interface learning curve is approximately 5 minutes to a week, depending on person and effort. Both feature TouchView screens, though the Triton Extreme features a working vac tube, m3 a kaoss pad, etc

yes, the 8 notes from portrait of tracy was used in swv's rain and then also used in pulling me back

Those changes are from SWV's "Rain" by Brian A. Morgan. I think he was also involved in the making of this cut.
Nice vid. :)

Ahhh No That is Jaco Pastorius's Portrait of Tracy. He wrote and played it on a 4 string bass guitar! Check him out. Most of the stuff we like today came from the jazz artist of yesterday. Those guys wrote some timeless stuff!

yes the 8 notes in the intro are from portrait of tracy. they were also used in swv's rain in which tyrese did a cameo in too.neat huh...
