I didn't just 'like' this woman, I loved her!!! And to think that background was where Patti LaBelle and the Bluebells got their start with this fab singer. I miss her so much and her music. Rest in Peace . Can't you hear that familiar Patti 'warble' in the background AND especially Nona! They were hot!
Wow! what timing! I loved her so much but particularly this album with the great Patti LaBelle of the Bluebells singing like no one else. Listen to "it's gonna a miracle". Nyro was unique in using such powerful back up vocals and she gave them free reign to sing
great enough to be 2 of my fav's of all time.
(Melanie used a gospel choir) But in 1971, all the things that were going on- the genius of music, their genius was such a gift. Beyond measure.
I love music from all the genres, but there are a few singers-and-or-composers who take me to place nobody else can - a place where ugliness, violence, crudeness, cruelty, greed, and a lack of consciousness about feelings and beauty can't enter. Among these artists, I include Mozart, Bach, Buddy Holly, Billy Strayhorn, Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Brian Wilson, and Laura Nyro. For those who Get It, no explanation is necessary. For the rest, no explanation would suffice.
love that story mystery... I can sooooooo see why they stopped.... its just gorgeous!
I 'm 56 and I frist fell in love with her when I was 16 and really needed her... I was heart broken and in a all girls boarding school. A black chick turned me on to Laura. She does give one pause. I feel the same way over "Companion, Roll of the Ocean and To a Child" from the Live at the Bottom Line Album. Breathless stuff!~
I hadn't realized til recently that Patti Labelle sang with Laura Nyro way back then...they sounded wonderful, and I admire both of them as singers also.
Try to find this album on vinyl if you can. There is a great picture of Labelle on the back of the album and some really wonderful words written describing the feelings they had making this historic album..I bought it new when it came out and it has always been and will be a keeper .. Regards.
@sananchicagio : The basically steal the second half of the song from Laura. They're too good to be "back-up" for anyone. Listen to those harmonies!! It's amazing that Patti still sounds the same 40 years later! Not many singers can keep their voice in such prime condition for that long.
@veeganboy Well, it's not really back-up. Laura was gracious enough to share billing and not egotistical to the point of wanting to hog the limelight. That said, her restraint actually benefits Patti and Co. as well. They're not as over the top as they so often were elsewhere.
Just remember this album and Laura Nyro. God bless her. I did not know she had passed. Oh my goodness, such amazing music and such a great song writer.
what a top lady..! i was introduced to nyro though my parents (i a 43) and there isnt an album i dont own, as like others have said.. she really was ahead of her time..
i wuld recommend every fan listening to "mr blue" and you will be addicted!!!
I'm just getting familiar with Ms Nyro. Alot of hit song that were recorded like "It's gonna take a miracle" sung by Denise Williams was written by Laura Nyro. I never knew that. She must have been a woman ahead of her time. Extremely talented song writer.
Absolutely gorgeous. Just listen to Patti's "I hear the bells, whoa..." at 1:36. And that Gamble/Huff production. Philly soul at its very best. And on the album, the best version ever of "I Met Him on a Sunday" leads into "The Bells." The whole album is just beautiful. Laura was a magnificent songwriter but her covers were killers too.
I remember hearing her sing at the University of Iowa in 1970. I loved her music so much. My world is not the same with her not in it. Thank God her music still lives on. I love you, Laura, wherever you are.
The first time I heard this song I was at a party, half drunk with a bunch of fellow 20 somethings (long time ago, whew!) The whole party stopped until the song ended then started up, again, like nothing had happened. I was dumbstruck. I don't think I spoke more than 5 words the rest of the nite. I was hooked on her music from that point on.
Great story ! I have only just discovered her music for the first time about a week ago - how did I miss such great music all my life ? Who knows ? Loved your story - I understand why. Thanks for sharing it.
Just beautiful!!! Labelle's gospel/rock/r&b infused vocals paired wit the raw emotion in Laura voice equal "confirmation of a higher power"...Nothin else needs to be said...
Oh wow, this really does it for me. I love Laura Nyro ... what a song! This is the kind if stuff we need today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting. Stay sweet.

One of those rare tunes when you become totally in awe of the power of not
only the composition (Marvin Gaye), but the phrasing and singing of the song,
the harmonies and the total end product........
That part about Laura having to play vocal catch-up with Ms Patti, Sarah & Nona...
It's 3 against 1...........Sista' Laura does very well.RIP

Interesting choice for this cover.......Looks like Naomi Watts & Modonna`s X.

The artist is not Patti LaBelle. She (they) are the back-up vocals. Not to diminish their contribution to the recording...but...this is Laura.
