Saddam Hussein harbored and funded terrorists. We set out to crack down on terrorism worldwide. Stopping a known sponsor of terrorists and killing terrorists inside his country accomplishes this.
It didn't really work that way, but that was the logic. Everybody who thinks it was for corporate gain needs to look at who actually has oil contracts in Iraq right now, and learn to think for themselves.

@slightlyoutofreach01 The oil industry aren't the ones who profited from the war(s) - the military complex is (3 trillion dollars is alot of money). Saddam Hussein wasn't a "harborer of terrorists" and particularly compared to any other north african/middle-eastern country in the world.
The whole war was launched on false grounds (911/WMD's) and it has done nothing to stop/prevent terrorism or increase the safety of the world or even your own nation (it's done the opposite, actually).

Saddam Hussein was indeed a harborer of terrorists. Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi and Abu Nidal were both in Iraq BEFORE we invaded. They just stuck around to cause trouble afterward.

Not once did the Bush administration claim a 9/11 link to Iraq. That's yet another myth that has managed to become fact in the minds of many. The same can be said of the belief that there were no WMD's in Iraq. Hussein had all the supplies, all the manpower, all the facilities ready, he was merely waiting for the US and UN to back off, and he'd have a WMD program once again. The fact that we didn't find vast stockpiles means nothing.

I agree 100% on this point. I'm not saying we were right to go to Iraq or that it was a good idea in any form. My only problem is that a wide range of myths about this war have taken route as 'fact,' and it bugs me. That's all.

Also seeing how the US accounts for 55% of the world's military spendings there's little wonder that the a great many military corporations have an active interest in keeping the US at war.
Anyway, all I'm saying is that the "war on terror" is about as effective as the "war on drugs", and only serves to fuel corporate interests.

@porrsmurfen My entire point about the industrial complex argument is that it's a correlation/causation issue. Because these companies are bound to make a profit by offering their services, they therefore must've 'arranged' for it to happen. If you hire a contractor to fix your house after a tree falls on it, does that mean he tipped the tree over himself? Why not? He made money from the incident.

But again, my original point was that the accusation that we invaded to 'steal' Iraq's oil ended up not being even remotely true. There are a LOT of 'facts' about this war that people like to parrot that are completely false. I'm not saying the war in Iraq was 'right,' but falsehoods are falsehoods.

In any case, I wouldn't call the deaths of 7500 soldiers, half that number in contractor deaths and close to 130 000 civilians casualties in Iraq & Afghanistan aswell as more than 3 trillion dollars in military spending an effective price for what has been achieved thus far (which is surprisingly little).
The coalition strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan has likely bred as many "terrorists" as it has killed (probably alot more).

@porrsmurfen I agree completely. We did a lot of good in Afghanistan(and that all may fall apart at any moment), but Iraq was the most misguided chapter in this entire war on terror. While we hurt Al Qaeda badly in Afghanistan... Iraq was just a mess. And yes, it did serve only to reinforce the US's image as the Satanic Aggressor in the minds of so many Muslims worldwide.
I can only hope that Iraq can manage to stand on their own and it all ends up being worth it somehow.
