I've got that exact guitar I bought new back in 96. Honestly I'd like to turn mine into a project guitar too, since I know I'll never get rid of it. Mustangs are cool cause they are rare and different. I don't even play mine cause it plays like crap compared to my american strat. But been thinking about modding it and trying to make a better guitar. Like what you did cool! I'd like to paint mine black. Think it would look sick with the tortoise pick guard. Anyway nice job!
@ChRiS8P8D Yea, just do it near the neck pickup. Kinda a pita in comparison to a neck based one, but it works. If you find you need it frequently, route out the pickguard a little bit. The neck on mine is super stable.
hey, about the Telecaster control dials, is it just a matter of taking them off and then replacing them or does it have to be specially fitted? please reply
@DaHazzMan I don't have the guitar in front of me right now, but I think a Tele control plate wouldn't fit perfectly and might need some minor modification to work. Although, I could be wrong. Hmm... now you've got me thinking. On this guitar the jack is in the control plate too, but the pickup switches aren't. That's a great question.
@Tibbon oh right, i won't mess with it then aha i love my Mustang but i prefer it with the Tele dials, like the one in the video but ah well, i'll leave it as it is, thanks anyway
you dont use the scappoling for comfort, you use it to show off, along with everything else you did, a new jack? the jack doesnt affect tone, , you only would need locking tuners if you have a tremolo, and you took that out!, also why would you rewire it, it wont do anything, and a sustainer on a mustang? you just wanna fill up your guitar with as much as you can to show off
@Tibbon And you might aswell not have any? i mean its not like you actually show any good playing at all, apart from your "AWSOME" effects.. I mean I even didnt know they manufactured "make your guitar sound like a robot taking a shit" stomp boxes these days.. who'd a guessed ey !
@Tibbon Unbelievable....Some people have nothing better to do than watch You Tube videos and comment inappropriately. Personally, I love the mods. I have modified mine as well by routing out the bridge and adding a SD SH-55 Seth Lover pickup. I love it. I will soon be locking the trem as you did and replacing the tuners with locking tuners. If you don't mod your guitar than you are not a player you are a wisher. I don't know a professional musician that doesn't mod their gear. Rock on man
@dtiepelman I'm actually thinking of making it again so that I can use the trem (unblocking the bridge) and putting a Mastery bridge on it. I've got one on my '59 Jazzmaster and it has absolutely no problems with tuning, even with heavy bending and whammy usage. No locking tuners on it either.
In '96 mustangs were cheap but now they are over the $1000 dollar range! i want one so bad but for now im stuck with my Squier Strat same colour as this guys getting a red tortoise pickgaurd like his soon.
@AstroCreep999 They don't really make them here, that's why. They're made by the Japanese and they're awesome. Go on Ishibari and go to the used section, they have a lot of mustangs in all colors pop up all the time for around 800 bucks. They're really popular now in Japan and here in the US as well.
I went to Fender Custom Shop website and they only made Strats and Teles. How can I get a Mustang customized for me ? and why did they customized yours when it says they only do strats and teles ?
@PBANDSNOW Pretty much. I'd venture a guess that to have a one-off made from them will be between $3,000-7,000 USD depending on options. Not cheap, but they are completely custom guitars and not production models at that point at all. You could probably have a similar one made elsewhere for half that (and in the US), but that's what a real Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt will run you.
I have read about the lock-down of the bridge using washers, but I just can not find a picture of the trick, and I cannot seem to figure out how it works. Could you explain, or even better - do you have a picture?
i was thinking of getting a 96 mustang, but im not sure about if i should get the 96 or a 69, would you say there would be more problems with an older guitar?
@IDanClarkI Personally I'd go with a newer one. The old ones are overpriced, no better than the newer ones, and you'll feel bad about changing out parts if/when you need to. Of course if you're simply looking for an investment, the old ones are great- but that's probably not what you're looking for.
wouldnt recomend doing the piezo or synth. youve already made a pretty sweet guitar and mucking it up with something as unreliable or as unforgivable as a piezio or synth. that thing is cool enough as it is
@marigold1994 No one asked you to. I'm super picky about tuning and intonation, and now it better suits me. It wasn't that much either. It was more like $450USD originally.
@IDanClarkI 10 years ago you could get 'vintage' ones for $300-400 all the time. Now its mainly kids that were in diapers when Nirvana was around that are pushing the prices up. To them, its a mythic guitar, but it really isn't anything special.
@WeekendProjectsOTC The problem is that it wasn't an awesome guitar. It was a decent guitar. The electronics were crappy, it wouldn't stay in tune for more than 2 songs and the frets wore out really quickly. For me a $450 guitar (what it cost in 1996) isn't a holy object that you shouldn't change. Rarely do 'big' artists even keep guitars exactly as they were from the factory. Almost every guitar needs some minor changes.
Well i got one and the guitar is awesome, theres no need to mod it except for a duncan SH-4 humbucker for a heavier sound, cause it stays intune perfectly, just make sure you check the positions of these things your strings are on (@Bridge)
@Tibbon He'd crap if he saw what I did to my Mustang. I took completely apart and took fine sand paper to the body, had it painted black at an auto shop, replaced the broken pearl white pickguard with a red one, put it back together, had a guitar shop fine tune it, and its just fine.... Not my gigging guitar, but I use it once in awhile, it is a great guitar.
you've wasted so much time and probably money to "mod" a shit guitar to begin with.
"I just use it for comfort" you are such a dickerboy. I'm sure it feels the same as any strat...
A piezo pickup? WTF is wrong with you?
You didn't even do the mods yourself? Your list of "mods" basically looks like what anyone would do to a guitar to prepare it for going on a long tour. Mods my ass
What is wrong with piezo pickups for occasional use? Godin and Parker ship their guitars with them all the time. Fender does too on some models (Tele Acoustasonic).
I did some of the mods myself, but I didn't scallop the neck myself. Believe it or not, not everyone does that themselves.
And you're right. Nothing is modified about this guitar. It is completely stock. If I returned it to the store they wouldn't know the difference.
@ladieslovelolboi did you mod you're guitar to fit up your ass? I bet you really suck at playing guitar, and you really suck dick well right? If you can't say anything nice shut the fuck up ok.
@ladieslovelolboi Not a shit guitar, and you must not have a very big selection of guitars you've played or you don't play at all to understand that a Mustang doesn't feel like a Strat, coming from a Strat and Mustang owner myself. And it may be what most people would do but its still mods that could be useful for people who just got a guitar. You are honestly stupid to insult him.
@Tibbon You did pretty well with the mods for this.
@Ivor45 Nope. Pretty much just wired it exactly the same as it was before. If something sounds 'phasey' with both pickups engaged, then you got something backwards. Just resolder and try again
World's most customized Mustang? Are you kidding me? Have you ever seen Kobains Mustang? You didn't even replace that stupid tremolo with a hard tail bridge.
I'm pretty sure you could put any pick guard you want on there. Making custom pickguards isn't hard. If I were to make one I'd probably use a laser cutting to cut the pattern from scratch.
The original tone wasn't all that appealing to me once I owned it for 5+ years and it was easier to make a guitar that I wanted than having a custom one made (something I've considered, but haven't choose the right luither yet).
Did you scallop the neck yourself? I've never seen that before. I've made a guitar before, but just bought a pre-made neck because they seem to take too much skill to do properly.
Also, I would have thought that deeper grooves would require more pressure?
nice. i particuly enjoyed the carving out done between each fret. ive never heard of that before. i might look into it for my mustang.
i too did away with the mustang trem but instead of making it obsolete i replaced it with a jazzmaster tremolo. ive only heard of one other mustang done that way and i think it was the girl from my bloody valentine.
Also, guitars from the mid-90's that are reissues of low-end student models that Fender made in the 60's are sacred and should never be made to play or sound better. The only person that could modify theirs and get praise was the God Kurt Cobain- and him doing so is awesome and amazing.
I have always loved the look of the mustang however if you want good tone from those types of guitar than you will have to customize the guitar because the factor pick ups are not that great.
I think it's interesting that you use a telecaster pick up
I've probably spent $700 customizing this guitar over the years with buying new parts and sending it to a guitar tech to have work done. I could have probably done it cheaper, but this was slowly done over time and stuff done often when I had it in for a setup. This also counts the GK-2A pickup I used to have on it.
how is sheilding the inside of your guitar i was thinking about doing it to my Jackson Dinky because i get alot of noise issues on my heavier gainy sounds would sheilding the inside of the guitar have any help with this?
While a Strat is a different instrument, Kurt played all sorts of guitars both live and in concert- including Strats. He was really digging tele's right before he went and killed himself, so really as far as I see it... as long as you're in the Fender family you should be fine.
je possede une fender mustang de 72, j'ai changé les pickups par un simple alnico2 type strat 50s (coté manche) et un shr1b double splitté (chevalet) de chez seymour , ça pete d'enfer man
Generally I think that would be a strong improvement. The bridge pickup is pretty anemic, so anything that's a bit hotter should help give you a bit more bite and power.
Think I tried that. You'd have to massively shim the neck in a bad way. You'd not have enough downward force that way and I think it would be a really negative thing.
I would recommend to NOT flip the tailpiece. I know it makes threading the strings a bit tougher, but that downforce is pretty key in keeping a good tone and the strings in place. Works on some guitars, but not on the mustang.
Mine's just filled with wood epoxy/filler stuff from the hardware store. Basically you open it up, fill it up, and then put it back together before it dries. The vibrato should no longer work then, but it should stay in tune a bit more. There's better ways of doing it for sure, but this has worked for 12+ years for me.
I have a video of me taking it apart somewhere around here. Note: Once you do this, don't take the bridge plate off again, or you'll have a mess.
I thought I did, but I didn't do it myself. I had my guitar tech do it for me. I took it apart recently to check, and it seems that its' filled with wood epoxy/putty stuff.
You could probably do it either way. Again, since I didn't do it myself, I'm not 100% sure. I'll try to find that video later.
Yea, basically fill up the cavity inside there with wood epoxy. I have a video of me doing that somewhere around here. It's easy, cheap and lasts forever.
Hell, even ones from the 60's aren't really all that special. Fender made them as their cheapest guitars at the time made for students. It wasn't like the Jaguar that Fender crafted to be their best model at the time.
So I bought the guitar in 1996. I was just 14 at the time. I didn't know a good guitar from a bad one. I thought solid state amps and Ibanez guitar pedals sounded decent and wanted a rack of Rocktron guitar processors.
Now I know what I like and what I want. I don't want a stock Fender Mustang. I've played vintage ones and reissues, and I don't like them but I love this guitar.
You and your guitar are d-bags.

The original tone wasn't all that appealing to me once I owned it for 5+ years and it was easier to make a guitar that I wanted than having a custom one made (something I've considered, but haven't choose the right luither yet).

omg, can you this guitar play? than play and shut up.. *boring*

All the time you spent working on it you could of been playing it. I mean thats cool but I have a 69 ri from 93 and it is perfect the way it is.

dude, its not like you have the most modified one, hell, i know a guy who has an on board computer on his, just letting u know, but pretty kewl
koocaracha 2 years ago
Did you scallop the neck yourself? I've never seen that before. I've made a guitar before, but just bought a pre-made neck because they seem to take too much skill to do properly.
Also, I would have thought that deeper grooves would require more pressure?
shug6009 2 years ago
No, deeper grooves + more pressure = sharp notes.
The deeper the groove, the less you've got to press to get an accurate note. Same with taller frets.

xcodyjamesx 2 years ago
nice. i particuly enjoyed the carving out done between each fret. ive never heard of that before. i might look into it for my mustang.
i too did away with the mustang trem but instead of making it obsolete i replaced it with a jazzmaster tremolo. ive only heard of one other mustang done that way and i think it was the girl from my bloody valentine.

Your gay should have just customized some wallmart P.O.S fender mustangs arent supposed to be customized.
its like buying a classic car and deciding to hack it up and put all new parts and the engine from your Hondai
motino 2 years ago
Yes. I am definitely gay.
Also, guitars from the mid-90's that are reissues of low-end student models that Fender made in the 60's are sacred and should never be made to play or sound better. The only person that could modify theirs and get praise was the God Kurt Cobain- and him doing so is awesome and amazing.
Dude the Fender Mustang IS the Hondai.
Tibbon 2 years ago
I have always loved the look of the mustang however if you want good tone from those types of guitar than you will have to customize the guitar because the factor pick ups are not that great.
I think it's interesting that you use a telecaster pick up
I play on an American Deluxe Telecaster
How much did you spend customizing your mustang?
fendergolden1 2 years ago
I've probably spent $700 customizing this guitar over the years with buying new parts and sending it to a guitar tech to have work done. I could have probably done it cheaper, but this was slowly done over time and stuff done often when I had it in for a setup. This also counts the GK-2A pickup I used to have on it.
Tibbon 2 years ago
DUDE, SERIOUSLY.
IMO, ANY AND ALL GUITARS = FAIR GAME FOR MODS. Just saying. It's your opinion, but I just figure it's a guitar, so do whatever.
Also, I know a dude who's modded his 'Stang waaaaaay more. You've done a good bit though.

how is sheilding the inside of your guitar i was thinking about doing it to my Jackson Dinky because i get alot of noise issues on my heavier gainy sounds would sheilding the inside of the guitar have any help with this?

Good video. Could you tell me more about the washers on the vibrato? I'm considering doing it myself.

Could the Mustangs neck be replaced with the stat's neck?
Oh, and great vid.
movies120 2 years ago
they can.
MichaelD8393 2 years ago
but shouldn't ^___^
nunopumpkin 2 years ago
possibly but you would probably have intonation issues because a strat has a 25.5" scale and this has a 24" scale. it might work though...

is mustang or jag-stang?
cxporra 2 years ago
Headstock says mustang, and so does the title. Not trying to be a dick, but... is reading a strong suit for you?
Tibbon 2 years ago
Sorry but I thought similar to jag-Stang, learn to have more respect for others, stupid.
cxporra 2 years ago
It's the Mustang, The JagStang is a hybrid of Mustang and Jaguar.

du recon its nesesery to get a mustang or search around with my strat to get both distorted and clean sort of nirvana sound?
olliebalc 2 years ago
While a Strat is a different instrument, Kurt played all sorts of guitars both live and in concert- including Strats. He was really digging tele's right before he went and killed himself, so really as far as I see it... as long as you're in the Fender family you should be fine.
Tibbon 2 years ago
cheers man you mite have saved me some money

je possede une fender mustang de 72, j'ai changé les pickups par un simple alnico2 type strat 50s (coté manche) et un shr1b double splitté (chevalet) de chez seymour , ça pete d'enfer man
z1a2y3b4x5c6 2 years ago
My french is really bad. But I think you're asking if on a 72 mustang you can replace the pickups with some 50's strat ones?
Yes, you definitely can. It might require a bit of routing of the pickguard, but I don't see why they wouldn't fit.
Tibbon 2 years ago
how do you think it would sound if i kept the neck pickup stock and put a sd hot rails in the bridge
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
Generally I think that would be a strong improvement. The bridge pickup is pretty anemic, so anything that's a bit hotter should help give you a bit more bite and power.
Tibbon 2 years ago
what do you think about flipping the tailpiece
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
Think I tried that. You'd have to massively shim the neck in a bad way. You'd not have enough downward force that way and I think it would be a really negative thing.
I would recommend to NOT flip the tailpiece. I know it makes threading the strings a bit tougher, but that downforce is pretty key in keeping a good tone and the strings in place. Works on some guitars, but not on the mustang.
Tibbon 2 years ago
ok thanks
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
but the neck is a pretty good pickup?
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
I replaced the original one in mine about 7 years ago, so I can't really remember.
IF you can make friends with someone that has a handful of pickups, just swap out several and see what you like.
I generally think of both of the mustang pickups as being really weak, thin, without great dynamic response.
Tibbon 2 years ago
alright, i know ive asked this before but how did you block the vibrato? give complete details
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
Mine's just filled with wood epoxy/filler stuff from the hardware store. Basically you open it up, fill it up, and then put it back together before it dries. The vibrato should no longer work then, but it should stay in tune a bit more. There's better ways of doing it for sure, but this has worked for 12+ years for me.
I have a video of me taking it apart somewhere around here. Note: Once you do this, don't take the bridge plate off again, or you'll have a mess.
Tibbon 2 years ago
i thought in your video you said that you used washers, if you could find that video would you upload it
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
I thought I did, but I didn't do it myself. I had my guitar tech do it for me. I took it apart recently to check, and it seems that its' filled with wood epoxy/putty stuff.
You could probably do it either way. Again, since I didn't do it myself, I'm not 100% sure. I'll try to find that video later.
Tibbon 2 years ago
oh ok cool
nirvousfreek 2 years ago
I want to hardtail my mustang? Anyone know how?
Jedt1 2 years ago
Yea, basically fill up the cavity inside there with wood epoxy. I have a video of me doing that somewhere around here. It's easy, cheap and lasts forever.
Tibbon 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Hmm.. you have ruined an Antique there. all the different colours look pretty bad too
GeorgeBguitar 2 years ago
It's a reissue, who cares.
wiitech 2 years ago
1995/96 being Antique?
Hell, even ones from the 60's aren't really all that special. Fender made them as their cheapest guitars at the time made for students. It wasn't like the Jaguar that Fender crafted to be their best model at the time.
Tibbon 2 years ago
Thanks for the info there mate
GeorgeBguitar 2 years ago
nice mod man!
do you know whether a strat pickup be installed in a fender mustang?
does the size of a strat pickup fit right in?
haangchoi 2 years ago
Unsure if it fits exactly. I know you can "make" damn near anything fit in there.
Tibbon 2 years ago
So I bought the guitar in 1996. I was just 14 at the time. I didn't know a good guitar from a bad one. I thought solid state amps and Ibanez guitar pedals sounded decent and wanted a rack of Rocktron guitar processors.
Now I know what I like and what I want. I don't want a stock Fender Mustang. I've played vintage ones and reissues, and I don't like them but I love this guitar.
I'm not telling you to do the same to yours.
Tibbon 3 years ago
I was waiting for him to play.
COUCHmade 3 years ago 2
If you're still looking for a good bridge pickup try a bare knuckle pickup,
