  • i like barenboim too

  • All of them are great ... Except the last one ... But i Like the video :)

  • @pianistq8 LAST? IT'S GOULD MAN. GOUUULLDDD.

  • I played the video several times and the only one that gives me goosebumps is Rubinstein...

  • where is Valentina Lisitsa ??

  • I think so

  • I like Barenboim the best, anyone agrees?.???

  • @coockies1424

I do! He is my favourite!

  • I like Barenboim the best, anyone sg

  • Kempff and then Rubinstein. Kempff is in the right speed and in the proper mood.

Gould I love you when you play Bach.

  • I like them all but Rubinstein and Glenn Gould were my favourite.

  • Kempff knew his Beethoven but we sure love speed

  • Rubinstein does it for me - passionate, with feeling. Barenboim - too soft, Perahia screwed it up a bit, Horowitz - not as passionate as Rubenstein, Kissin - too romantic, Gould - plays it like a Bach piece, Kempff - clearly knows it well but not as good as my favourite. I took the time to listen to all of them play the complete piece and still like Rubenstein the best.

  • In this piece, I think Rubinstein is the best. But in Goldberg variations there isn't any one could play better than Gould :)

  • I like Rubinstein & Kissin's style.

  • 1. Kissin Evgeniy Absolutly detailed

    2. Horowitz

    ....

it can be records were different

  • I think all play very good, becouse I so can't ))

  • I like the performance by Murray Perahia most.

  • Comment removed

  • Barenboim a bit soft, Perahia screws the most important part by hitting the wrong keys, Rubinstein with Beethoven's spirit, Kempff with the usual confidence but not convincing, Horowitz probably not really in the mood though with force, Kissin remarkably clear playing but initially playing a bit slow, Gould without emphasize (so to say: dull) and passion. Compare Brendel and Lisitsa, both offer you a crystal clearly shining moon, really different from the 7 in this vid. Still Thanks a lot really

  • who the fuck said this was a good idea

  • Love it!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry, but this video is awful! Here is everyone's and nobody's rendition - it's like a group sex. What a whim!

  • They are all amazing, but Runbistein has more passion

  • Barenboim plays it a tad to fast I think.

  • I'd say Barenboim's version, but also Gould's version is interesting.. Too bad Dinu Lipatti didn't live long enough to record Beethoven.. had he, then things would've been very different now..

  • let me just say - very well edited indeed!

  • vladimir horowihs :S

  • For me it's Perahia's version. This is not about who's best. They are all outstanding pianists but for me I prefer the Perahia interpretation. It's just personal taste.

  • I honestly think that Beethoven would be amazed by all these perfomances. I also believe that he would find all interpretations pretty interesting.

  • why that vid doesn't have beethoven play

  • Kissin

  • Lisitsa all the way :) Kempff is a close second, though

  • Impecable !!

  • Kissin, his just feel so special

  • between kissin and horowitz. I'd have to give it to horowitz - this time...

  • kissin the best

  • nevmind i change my mind...kissin-kempff-barenboim-rubinstein-gould-horowitz-perahia

  • perahias music is out of sync with the video, though...

  • @audreyhsux5727 so's Rubinstein's...

  • Kempff looks rather inquisitive about whats for dinner tonight.

  • Lisitsa rocks!

  • and the others already made a point about the polish rubinstein

  • kissin-horowitz-barenboim-kempff-rubinstein-gould-perahia

  • in order: Kissin, Gould, Barenboim, Horowitz, Kempff, Perahia, Rubinstein

I like how Gould goes extreme Rubato on some places, but it's a bit too much, I think Kissin finds a right mix of expression and tempo. Hated Rubinstein's version

  • I like the ferocity of Barenboim's interpretation best, as I most certainly associate Beethoven with ferocity and visceralness. Close behind would be Kissin and then Rubenstein.

  • valentina lisitsa without doubts is my favorite performer of this piece..

  • Rubinstein, hands down.

Aww, using that Kempff recording is so unfair... poor guy looked like he was about to kick the bucket at any moment.

  • Rubinstein, Kempff & Horowitz, of course. Although I liked all the performances.

  • Horowitz is the best.

  • rubinstein sounds the best

  • This is so cool...

  • Glenn Gould sure looks like Beethoven!

  • Please compare with Valentina Lisitsa...

  • it has over 7 million views half of them mine lol

  • id have to say kempff,i watch his all the time lol

  • dude, you forgot one very important pianist in this "who's best" : valentina lisitsa. Listen to her 3rd movement and then try to tell me she doesn't deserve to compete with these guys.

  • @PrezOfERM I think exactly the same!

  • Kissin's is obviously far superior to anything else ever heard in this overplayed warhorse of a sonata. He makes it fresh and the music comes alive from beneath his powerful fingers!

  • Kissin. Listen to the dynamic variation. The accents. The melodic line. Kissin makes this piece interesting. Some play the notes but just give it too much of a redundant repitition feeling in the way the piece develops. They are all good pianists. I would say Gould 2nd.

  • Perahia :)

  • Horowitz

  • In think Kempff does it the best.

  • Comment removed

  • Gould is my hero -- what an individualist!

  • check out the greatcomposers channel video by Salman. fantastic!

  • First 3 of them are epic ! especially i like Rubinstein )).

  • I like a lot Evgeny Kissin.

This part is technically fast but too fast loses the musicality and becomes metalic. Kissin gives for me the perfect combination of beat, pathos and musicality.

  • Where the Hell's Valentina Lisitsa?! She shits on these pianists.

  • @pianor91 lol..she, ehm, "shits" on rubistein horowitz and co??

if u can say something like this, u dont know anything about piano interpretation, or maybe Just because lisitsa recordings are made in 21th century (mixers, mics and post working on the sound so it can be warmer and better to listen, as she said) and the audio on these old pianist have low quality.

I suggest you to listen to Rachmaninov himself playing piano, u will find it horrible..

Every interpretation is good in it's own way..

  • @MrLocalitaItalia I have done. Valentina Lisitsa's interpretations aren't 'interpretations' 9/10 she plays the music exactly how it's written and intended to be played. She doesn't take unscrupulous control of artistic licence. It sounds as though most pianists would rather not play it how it's intended and try and make a name for themselves with their interpretations, than play it how it's supposed to be; thus, in my opinion, ruin it. You can always tell when this has been done to a piece.

  • @pianor91 unfortunately we will never know how a piece it's Really supposed to be played in some composers like beethoven chopin mozart.. we have just some suggestion in music sheets and in the authour's own life, but we can't listen to them playing their pieces..so according to me, every pianist playing these pieces gives out a new thing, hidden in other performances.. which makes every performance perfect in it's own way.

but hey, it's always a matter of view points :)

  • @MrLocalitaItalia That is the best way to view it, this isn't my favorite by far but the technical prowess and obvious love of Beethoven shine through. And like you said we don't have any way of knowing exactly the way they were performed.

  • @MrLocalitaItalia Tell me how you really feel :D

  • @pianor91 That's nonsense, Lisitsa's play is also just another intrepetation. You know, Beethoven actually intended to create a certain space to interpretate in his pieces - so there is not one interpretation that matches Beethoven's writing the most. You can never compare the writing of a piece to the playing of it. In my opinion - but opinions always differ - I prefer Barenboim's interpretation because he by far puts the most feeling in it and even try's to tell the 'story' behind the piece.

  • although not readily believed i think gould is the best pianist of the 20th century. his willingness to play music his own way and the general feeling associated with his music astounds me. this song was right up his alley. kempff is a highly underrated musician in general although i think he plays the 1st movement of this sonata much more beautifully. kissins may have been the most traditional... and very well played but not my personal favorite.

  • in my opinion Rubinstein ,peahia and kissin are the best of them because they can show the romantic spirit of this song, and the other players sounds more classical...

  • kissin rapes this piece

  • Loved how Kissin carried the phrases. But I like still loves Glenn Goulds power.

  • i think kissin sounds too logically perfect and lacking raw personality, it seems robotic

  • I still maintain that Valentina Lisitsa's is the best I have heard, and probably ever will.

  • @pianor91 i'm with you but i keep the door open for baranboim too.

  • Kissin seems to play the dynamics written much better, and his feeling in his playing is amazing.

  • Do not miss Andre Watts' version, very rythmical, not chaotic at all, so steady you can almost dance to it and played with lots of "cajones", lol, much in Beethoven's temperament.

  • I think Kissin plays it the way that Beethoven would have wanted it to be played

  • @farrell360 I like a lot Evgeny Kissin.

This part is technically fast but too fast loses the musicality and becomes metalic. Kissin gives for me the perfect combination of beat, pathos and musicality.

  • @farrell360 Yeah, cause you would fuckin' know.

  • @farrell360 naw, man, that's Rubinstein's skill

  • @farrell360 Totally agree, but perhaps he has a better Gran Piano...

  • @farrell360 And I thing Wilheme Kempff is right on target and plays the way Beethoven would have desired. Our ears are different...ha!

  • rubinstein, kissin, horowitz r my favorites. im not russian but i think russian pianists r the best

  • @1203456789 Rubinstein was Pole .

  • @albertynk since theyr neighbors i think its safe to put them in the same category. its not like i called a chinese pianist german!

and most of these eastern european pianists were products of USSR, there were really no russia poland ukraine etc at that time, they were all the same. thats why people tend to call them all russians.

  • @1203456789 Tell that to a Pole, he is likely to hit you. Poland has never been part of the USSR anyway. Have you ever heard of the word 'arrogance'?

  • @FGy8 ok eastern europeans? does that make u feel better?!

  • @1203456789 horowitz was ukrainian by birth

  • The actual audio quality of Barenboim's parts you used were abysmal - you can't really judge him based on that. You should try and opt for higher quality video next time...

  • Horowitz stands head and shoulders above all the others imho. Technically of course it's definitively excellent, but the overall performance conveys a majesty and power that is Beethoven's due, which is quite apparent when the movement is listened to in its entirety. There's also a little edginess in his rendering which makes it exquisitely exciting. (incidently I think Barenboim is vastly over-rated and doesn't belong here in this list)

  • These guys all have quirky caricatures of what would otherwise be an optimal Beethoven. Move over... now you can add VALENTINA LISITSA to the mix. She's got an awsum technique and sense of the music. Once bitten, you will fall in love with her. Then watch her Appassionatta. Gilels used to be my favorite. Glen Gould's complete performance was so fast, it was an abomonation. Faster and louder is virtually never better. They are missing a lot of articulation.

  • Gilels

    Askenazy

    Kissin

    Rubinstein

    Horowitz is a parody.

  • @bratupir What did you mean by "Horowitz is a parody" ?

  • @bratupir

OMFG are you my lost brother?

I got the same exact top 3 for this movement.

Only thing I don't share is your opinion about Mr. Horowitz......

I think Mr. Horowitz is even worst than a sad parody..... To make myself clear: I PREFFER LANG LANG over that old piece of crap!!!!

  • I prefer the olders : Rubinstein, Kempff, Horowitz ...

  • Rubinstein, followed by Barenboim, Gould, Horowitz, kempff, Kissin, Perahia. The first two being a league of there own in this masterpiece.

  • Comment removed

  • All obv amazing but kissin is discustingliy fast and awesome

  • I prefer Perahia and Barenboim, but Kempff wasn't bad either.

    good job!

  • Excellent!!!

  • Here comes Glenn Gould! *Beethoven's pic pops up*

  • im sorry, but that wasnt perahia´s best performance by far....

  • pianisti magnifici!

  • Wonderful Gould, forever!

  • very nice from alll!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice video!

    I prefer Barenboim and Kempff

  • Interesting video!

It seems me Kempff version is too slow, I prefer Perahia, Horowitz and Rubinstein, but to select the best version for me I have to listen the sonata in its whole.

    Thank you to this video!

  • Nice!!!

  • very similar to my video
