Howard Shore composed a brilliant soundtrack. . listen at 1:25 . . a single choral statement of Sauron's theme plays. If you have read The Silmarillion, you know that Sauron, before he fell, was once a Maia, a powerful being of light, whose presence is evoked by the majesty of Lothlorien and Galadriel.

The world of Lotr has actually more to do with the culture and environment of Scandinavia and Middle Europe then with New Zealand. So the soundtrack and costumes of Lotr is sympathized with the european ancient world. That's my opinion.
