we are all allowed our opinions on matters and the world would be less interesting if we all just agreed. That said, which animals should be given rights then, and who should determine that, and based on what, intellegence as you suggest. How do we measure how smart an animal is and at what point would it be to smart to kill. Do you kill insects? Sure you do, without knowing a lot of times and with no monetary gain. How about mice in your house, they seem smart enough, should they be spared?
In my opinion, what we are doing makes perfect sense. We need to eat, people like, mako, not sure you know this but again, people like eating mako. They pay us and we buy other food and this is how we survive. The idea of us eating all of it is foolish, mako every day would get pretty boring. So I guess we could barter, fish for pork, pork for beef, beef for fish. This system works but, its less efficient because their values don 't match on a pound for pound basis,
so how many pounds of pork for a pound of fish? This system is imperfect, and so some smart guy decided to use money to even this problem out. So us fishermen and farmers work for money to feed themselves, and in the process feed the world. And then some superbe intellect like namikiblade comes along and sees one shark being killed and sees us enjoying our job, and decides we are wrong and he/she is right.
We should just eat what we kill and it would be alright? So please stop eating any meat, as the animal it came from probably suffered some, especially if its chicken, pork, beef, etc from a slaughterhouse. And also, i would think that until you can decide how much plants suffer from being cut and collected, then you should probably leave that alone too. sharks aren't built to withstand large scale fishing. slow to mature and low reproduction rates mean that it takes a long time for them to recover. it's much more sustainable to fish for species lower in the food chain.

yes they are a target fish, thats why they they darted it after they saw it. Bycatch in this type of fishing is zero. You see the fish, then you make a decision to kill it or not.
i don't mind commercial fishing, it's just when it affects our catches. I don't like how they are able to go catch thousands of pounds of crab in an area i'm not even allowed to fish because they say the population is down.
commercial fishing is quickly becoming outdated and will be replaced by farm raised fish. commercial fishing contributes something like $2 per pound of fish into the economy vs. about $100 per pound for recreational fishing.
but when you look at the total dollar amount between the two industries commercial fishing totals are far more, sport fishing doesnt even come close. and commercial fishing is quickly becoming NOT outdated. It will always be around. You can't farm raise all types of fish to keep up with demand. It's just not practical.
im a fisherman in alaska and i started 7 years ago and and now i own four boats 2 longliners and 2 gillnetters and catch more than 2 million in fish a year that you eat we have to go out and find the fish it isnt like we have a field of cows to round up and kill them then it gets sent to our mcdonalds it takes a lot of work and long hours to be a fisherman and you know every dollar is well earned thanks for the good video nice shot

Their goal is to control the resources eventually, then rape the life out of it useing the most efficient means possible. That means fewer boats and less selective methods of fishing.
Here in Florida, I don't ever fish far enough offshore to have any hope of seeing a mako, so thanks for the video. Instead of buying packaged meat in a some supermarket, I'd rather catch & clean my own fish...and have a greater sense of respect for the animal as a result.

The fact that you murder them for money and not for food sickens me. You might eat them on occasion but you are a "commercial" fisherman. Short finned makos are now on the endangered list due to the greed and barbarism of humanity. Makos are gentle animals who only kill because they are hungry and not for pleasure.

Quite a slanging match going on here- it's a shame they killed the shark, but let's get a few things in perspective: First, they're going to EAT the fish, the same way you eat your tuna fish salad. Second, spearfishermen carry on all over the world without this sort of harassment and it's recognised as a sport. Third, the real threat to sharks is japanese long liners who catch them by the hundred for their fins.
Mako sharks are the fastest fish in the world. According to who you listen to, they can put on brief sprints up to 55 knots. More likely is 35-40 knots. They are also among the most intelligent and curious of sharks.

yes they are a target fish, thats why they they darted it after they saw it. Bycatch in this type of fishing is zero. You see the fish, then you make a decision to kill it or not.

i don't mind commercial fishing, it's just when it affects our catches. I don't like how they are able to go catch thousands of pounds of crab in an area i'm not even allowed to fish because they say the population is down.

commercial fishing is quickly becoming outdated and will be replaced by farm raised fish. commercial fishing contributes something like $2 per pound of fish into the economy vs. about $100 per pound for recreational fishing.

but when you look at the total dollar amount between the two industries commercial fishing totals are far more, sport fishing doesnt even come close. and commercial fishing is quickly becoming NOT outdated. It will always be around. You can't farm raise all types of fish to keep up with demand. It's just not practical.

im a fisherman in alaska and i started 7 years ago and and now i own four boats 2 longliners and 2 gillnetters and catch more than 2 million in fish a year that you eat we have to go out and find the fish it isnt like we have a field of cows to round up and kill them then it gets sent to our mcdonalds it takes a lot of work and long hours to be a fisherman and you know every dollar is well earned thanks for the good video nice shot

what we did to this shark is part of our job. This is not cruel, and did not hurt the over all shark population. Thanks to all you super smart types who have commented so far. ok then, sorry, didn't realize i was dealing with such intellectuals. The reason that fishermen are a dying breed is simple and crude. the GOVERMENT in Canada acts a lot like a large corporation. Their goal is to control the resources eventually, then rape the life out of it useing the most efficient means possible. That means fewer boats and less selective methods of fishing.

Here in Florida, I don't ever fish far enough offshore to have any hope of seeing a mako, so thanks for the video. Instead of buying packaged meat in a some supermarket, I'd rather catch & clean my own fish...and have a greater sense of respect for the animal as a result.

no commercial fishing = no seafood. fresh, wild fish is one of mother earths greatest gifts! and sorry people, commercial fishing is not the same as sport fishing. picture yourselves out from your crappy jobs, on a boat where your paycheck is directly affected by how many pounds of fish get offloaded each trip. you'll put the thought of a rod and reel awfully far back in your head, and pick up your harpoon pretty damn quick when you see a thousand bucks swimming around in the form of a shark.

My husband is a commercial fisherman (menhaden) as was his father, grandfather, stepgrandfather, cousins etc. It is our small communities livelyhood. Its all these men know and not to mention LOVE. Some comments boasts they have no respect for the fish? You are SO wrong. We love those fish. They mean everything to us. Fisherman are underpaid and misunderstood. LONG LIVE OLD SALTS! I eat meat - but I try to make sure the food I eat has had a healthy life and a decent one. I would not eat or touch food if I knew the animal had suffered in anyway.
By attacking an animal for the sake of your own pleasure is very different from hunting - so don't make out what you did in the video is hunting - it ain't. Hunters have respect for the animals they kill.

I do eat seafood only, however, only if I need to eat it. It's a rarity, might as well be considered a vegetarian. The Mako Shark is one of the most beautiful animals on the planet. The fact that you murder them for money and not for food sickens me. You might eat them on occasion but you are a "commercial" fisherman. Go on tough guy, hop into the water, in his domain and see how you fare, eh. Without techonology the human race is helpless.

I love Mako sharks and think they are amazing animals - so I wasn't aware of the true nature of your video when I found it.
Short finned makos are now on the endangered list due to the greed and barbarism of humanity. Makos are gentle animals who only kill because they are hungry and not for pleasure.
These animals have been around a lot longer than we have and deserve our respect and protection.

Quite a slanging match going on here- it's a shame they killed the shark, but let's get a few things in perspective: First, they're going to EAT the fish, the same way you eat your tuna fish salad. Second, spearfishermen carry on all over the world without this sort of harassment and it's recognised as a sport. Third, the real threat to sharks is japanese long liners who catch them by the hundred for their fins.
