Lauridsen's is pleasing, "pretty", but Stroope's is by far the most lingering, haunting of all of them. Stroope was not afraid to use a sense of dissonance and texture that the others didn't venture towards. it is simply my fave out of all the renditions. IMO
@Fusiondoom I absolutely agree! Although both are FANTASTIC, I have to say that Stroope's interpretation leaves a sense of wonder and tranquility for the audience a tad more than Lauridsen's.
this is the absolute best arrangement of this song! I love Stroope and it is amazing how he took Agee's poem and transformed it into a magical experience. Dont get me wrong, Barber and Lauridrsen did a fabulous job with this piece as well, but props go to Stroope always!
This same soloist was an All-State soloist in 2005 I believe for the Lamentations of Jeremiah performance with the mixed choir. I sing with her in this choir
@tgipson30238 I have done Lauridsen's version of this song and am now doing Stroope's. I would actually put them on about the same level. The Lauriden Nocturnes are in my opinion his best works. As far as Stroope is concerned, I don't think that I CAN pick a favorite. It's all amazing!
I understand. I've performed all three arrangements and the Lauridsen arrangement nearly put me to tears, but there is just something about the Stroope arrangement that gives me the chills! I absolutely LOVE "Nocturnes" and it is one of my favorite choral works by Lauridsen. I would say it ties with "Le Chansons de Roses". I love them both equally!
This choir is awesome and should have more renditions on here. I thought I read somewhere in the Longview Newspaper that ETBU Concert Choir was doing a 'World Premeiere' song! Where's that song, By Daniel Gawthrop?
Stroope is fantastic. Your choir is great, too. I love this arrangement. My choir is doing this right now. The "Hearts all whole" part sends shivers down my spine.
Mr. Moore is still doing amazing things with his choirs. I graduated from ETBU in May of 2006. This is also one of my favorites. Please post more ETBU concerts on here, I miss these days.
Because that's Mr. Moore directing, and y'all are singing in the chapel. I said in my comment that I graduated from ETBU in May '06. I was a music education major. I'm hoping to come see you sing in the Centrum in Houston on the first.
DarMiesha was my bud! I lost her phone number after I graduated...my phone was ruined. I heard about your loss, and my heart and prayers went out for your family. I hope she is doing well. This is Josh Broomas by the way....Tell her I said hi and that I would like to know how she is doing!
soloist epic job!

Stroope's version is the most haunting and memorable version of the text, even better than Barber's imo!

@Fusiondoom What about the Lauridsen? It's hard to beat that one.
