We hope that Islamic extremists dont take the power in Syria, Egypt etc
Let's remember the Iranian revolution of ‘79, democratic people trusted extreme Islamists who pretended to be their allies and turned out to be just as repressive and corrupt, wearing a mullahs robe rather than a monarch's gown.
At the end democracy left Iran, try not to end up like them, being murdered and tortured and imprisoned even more than under the previous regime.
The real problem with Iran is Islam. Islam is the cancer of the world and a cancer that has made Iran sick for 1,400 years. Get rid of Islam and we will see many (but not all) of the problems disappear.
also the only reason the economy during the war was ok was because the money from the Shahs era was still there. Now moussavi would not be much better than ahmadinejad. and for the record these two guys are both khomeinists and will not do iran any good.
Ahamdinejad won the election by a large margin because he literally campaigned his entire presidency- going to places in Iran that the elites like Mousavi or Rafsanjani probally dont even know that exist. Ahmadinejad worked for it and got to enjoy the fruits of his hard work. Mousavi and Co are nothing more than SOUR Loosers.
Escobar seems to be high. As a farsi speaker, I can honestly say that Ahmadinejad won the debate by a long shot. He was logical, he was sound, and he was calm. On the other hand Mousavi seemed and sounded bitter and often got personal.

Over time, Western democracy has evolved from accepting slavery to its present form. However, money, the interest groups, the religious view and other forces have always influenced it. In Iran, the same forces are involved in the dynamics of its democracy. The difference is not as much about the elements involved as it is about the balance and the amount of the involved elements. Giving Irans democracy some time, it might evolve to a more meaningful form than the western one.
Why ask the opinion of somone from Brazil who's in Brazil about the affairs of Iran? is it because he's from a less afleunte country than some & people will believe him? is this more propaganda?
Of course he means the latter, namely a South African type solution. Bear in mind that from the Jewish point of view, we had no "natural" solution for 2000 years, until returning to our ancient homeland. We have prayed for this for thousands of years. Now we have a situation where, through politics, millions of innocent Arab people called Palestinians are suffering. They despise us wishing to kill us all. If only the Jews were given some indication that the Arabs understand our own needs.
OK. Of course no one has anything against nuclear power for peaceful means. The problem begins when an existential threat begins to effect Israel. Like it or not, Israel is the product of history, of thousands of years of persecution by the west. This was solved by transferring the 'Jewish problem' to the middle east, creating a very suspicious Israel.
certainly America also has problems worth addressing. There is some truth to your statements however, be so kind as to directly address my insight on Iran.
Please keep white americans from comming in here and make stpid retarded comments- for 30 years these bastards kept their mouth shut about the crimes of islamic republic against innocent IRANIANS- NOTE: ISLAMIC REPUBLIC WAS CREATED AND FINANCED BY JIMMY THE BASTARD CARTER AND ITS MASTER ENGLAND IN 1979
I believe that Iranians, particularly the youth movement (possibly also partly due to their "green" movement) see what's happening not only around the world for the first time in generations, but also in Iraq and they ask, in a sense, 'Where is our upward mobility?'. Where is our freedom, or promise of freedom?
I think they are suddenly gripped by an extreme sense of being isolated, and mocked by freer societies. That won't do in today's world.

Great Insight by Pepe Escobar. Very knowledgeable on Iranian economic, social, and political infrastructure. Something that is greatly missing in American main stream Media.
This is a beautiful report by Pepe and RealNewsNetwork. I became a fan of RealNews since the time of American election. They cover the news Truely as they are with correct analysis.
It has been state capitalism since the beginning. The enclosures and other repressive laws were pushed by the state to force the peasants to work for the factories.
People need a financial income so by realotment the poor peasants need to stop their business and most of them sell their land to the rich farmers. Their descendents need to find another job and relocate. Its deportation as Stalin did and still existing in so called civilised countries. you'll find a good example in "Viva Zapata" first part, the meeting with the president, where the poor farmers complain their land has been taken away though still difficult to understand without experience.
so i was flipping through today's Toronto Star and on a photo of Toronto Iranian demonstrators against the botched vote, a dude had the Real News dot kom as a t-shirt!
Pepe and real news were very bright and energetic yet again, thank you so very much for all that exillarating discussions, this is the greatest news on the internet for sure.
Mexican elections! Thats all I have to say, shit any election. Florida?! Pfft!! We need to finally get rid of politicians!! They can buy, scam, con, intimidate, radicalize electors, and normally they do!!! Its just not covered by mass media. Thats why its so important to protect internet and free speech. Great job Real News!!
Another illuminating interview and great video on The Real News! A 5-star performance from Paul Jay and Pepe Escobar in explaining the current political situation in Iran.
Another illuminating interview and great video on The Real News! A 5-star performance from Paul Jay and Pepe Escobar in explaining the current political situation in Iran.
So far the youth gangs sanctioned by the gov sounds like what Obama is doing in the US to create a civ. force for battle inside the US. Choosing a leader by the rich, sounds like the Rothchild's in the West. It was said that the Bush admin. also did electoral fraud. The US gov & the Iranian gov have things in common. Both beat their people for speaking out & protesting. I think if Iran would just take it in the ass from Israel & suck US gov oil greed cock, then relations would be good w Iran
What about USA electronic unaccountable votes and electoral frauds by the Bush administration, then following this, who is Barack Obama??,answer:9th cousin of Dick Chenney and Bush, and they all are relatives of the Queen Elizabeth of England........All stays in the family...I mean the illusionist democratic familyXDXDXD!!!Jewish masonic zionist mafia!!
It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.
Joseph Stalin
In the computer age there should be a way to ensure proper voting, very easy to do now why don't governments implement an audit. They would loose control of the power, without a unique identifier elections are a farce. The states has electronic voting , its a total sham.
I think he's gotten this one wrong. The middle and upper class opposed Ahmadinejad, but they are a minority within Iran. Most Iranians are either peasants or belong to the nonrural working class. Ahmadinejad ALWAYS had their votes. The Western media towed the US government line by pretending that Mousavi had majority support in Iran. Mousavi's loss was inevitable, and by propagandizing the public to think he was a shoein, the media has reinforced the image of Ahmadinejad as a dictator.
My condolences to the Iranian people and their Green Revolution. I think I can understand what you're feeling at the moment. I remember my utter disbelief followed by weeks of dismay after Bush was re-elected in 2004. 4 more years seems like a very long time but it will pass, so keep up with your struggles for liberalization of your country. Also, work to ensure that elections and results are properly monitored in 2013. Good luck to you all!
Just looking at the evidence; and all the posturing from Washington leading up to the election results (from Obama in particular on his recent visit to Cairo).
Another "color revolution" or CIA people power coup? No thanks.
It seems obvious that something is strange in the vote count this time. At any rate, the Iranian government has really made some enemies this time. You can't beat people like that and get away with it. It was like they sent out a mob to attack the protesters. They must have killed several people. We are finally seeing change within Iran. Hopefully this will lead to a new phase in Iran. Great people! Best of luck to them!!
"The homogeneous picture of extreme belief where the majority of people believe in orthodox Islam which comes out of Iran is not true."
Iran is a country of different ethnic minorities and different religionsIranian women have become canaries of the mind. If you want to guage a society and how free it is, you go to its women.

Thank you for such nuanced analysis, The Real News. Even TeleSur's coverage (usually far more trustworthy and outside the usual state-corporate alignments - a bit like DemocracyNow! but on actual television) was unbelievably bad on this matter (saturated with knee-jerk enemy-of-my-enemy readings). So thank you for showing how complex this situation is.

Pepe makes a lot of assumptions
colmmernagh 2 years ago
what are the assumptions? Just curious, since I'm about to watch the vid.
osiris2669 2 years ago
yeah, but isn't him here to express his "expert" opinion on the matter? that's basically what an assumption is...

Where Ahmadinejad went wrong was, making the fraud a "landslide". Everyone knows, he didn't have that kind of support.

Military Coup? Mousavi is no different to Yuvchenko or Saakashvili.
camb702 2 years ago
What makes you say that?
danmanjones 2 years ago

If you want to guage a society and how free it is, you go to its women.
danielnz1 2 years ago 5
I think the quote suggests you see how they treat their criminals...
Women aren't oppressed all over the world, just in agricultural places. The hunter/gatherers, like in Africa, are much more often matriarchal.
But yes, in Iran, the women are oppressed. And hot.
