God, Scotto's musical genius, the phrasing, the intention, the colouring....so extraordinary the way she attacks her first phrase..... Freni is singing, beautifully like she usually sings, and that is all.... Scotto is making music, expressing, saying, telling as that opera is about music with words or words with music.... and truly using all the palette of colours this role demands...

A very good singer sings together with a wonderful artist and musician.

@Anjemmaat89 Absolument ! Même si dans ce duo, Agalgisa est une tierce en dessous de Norma, dans nombre d'autres pages, elle chante à l'unisson avec elle et doit donner plusieurs contre-uts ce qui oblige souvent à transposer quand on distribue le rôle à un mezzo.

I personally like Freni a lot better than Scotto, though Scotto had more colours in her voice. In duets, though, they blend perfectly. Only Sutherland/Horne, Sutherland/Elkins and Callas/Simionato come to mind when thinking of vocal blending like this.

They sound quite good together, and I just love the fact that both roles are sung by sopranos (plus Freni is the lighter one, so the whole "young girl" thing is more believable) :)!

I don't mean I don't like it. She has beautiful voice but I prefer Scotto, or Callas, or Stratas, or my favourite Gabriela Silva (who IS a fan of Freni's voice :)... It's like fruits. One could love apples, I prefer oranges... although I like apples at the same time.

I'll come out and say it: we've got Scotto as Norma, Freni as Adalgisa. Who would you REALLY want singing what in this duet? Scotto has somewhat of an advantage thanks to her Sony recording with Giacomini and Troyanos.

It would have been interesting to hear Freni as Norma and Scotto as Adalgisa. After all, Scotto's voice, by 1978, had acquired that delicious warmth and darkness, so she would have made a good Adalgisa. I have recordings of her Normas from 1974, 1978, and 1981 and she has certainly proven herself to be an excellent Norma.
